Info Wanted: Regarding the porting and preservation of commentary tracks (for example, Ratatouille or Stardust)

What are the forum rules on ripping audio tracks from one format of media and providing them to others without the opportunity to hear them?

For example, Ratatouille’s Blu-Ray release included a commentary from Brads Bird and Lewis that is bafflingly and agonizingly missing from the DVD release. Would it be alright for me to ask someone who owned the Blu-Ray to rip that audio track and provide it to me, or is it off limits because the Blu-Ray is still available and still a viable medium? Similarly, Stardust’s Region 2 release has a commentary from Matthew Vaughan and Jane Goldman that is conspicuously absent from the Region 1 release I bought only two days ago. I’m sure there are other examples of this. For example, the original SE release of The Bourne Identity (which I do own) has a commentary track missing from the later “Explosive Extended Edition,” which is the one now sold and in print.

So, is it alright to ask for these things (mind you, I’m not asking)?

this would fall under custom dvd projects (and perhaps preservations). usually it is dealing with OOP (i.e. laserdisc, etc.) so i in my opinion would have to be treated differently for readily available content.

boon et al will chime in for the official comment, etc. but i'm guessing simply porting bluray content won't go over well.

that being said, i do like these kinda projects :)

I'd love to get a rip of the Stardust commentary somehow.

I used to be very active on this forum. I’m not really anymore. Sometimes, people still want to get in touch with me about something, and that is great! If that describes you, please email me at [my username]ATgmailDOTcom.

Hi everybody. You’re all awesome. Keep up the good work.

Preservations apply to materials that are unavailable in a current medium and have been unavailable for a long period of time. All of your examples qualify as custom DVDs and not preservations under forum rules.

This is covered in the FAQ (see #12b). Basically, it's alright to use the forum to ask for commentaries off laserdiscs - it's still technically illegal, but we hope that the copyright police won't bother to come after Jay if it's obsolete stuff that's being shared.

You need to read the FAQ as well. (Unless you were asking how to rip the audio track off the Region 2 DVD that you have legitimately purchased - in which case, post your query in the technical help forum.)

I've been around here long enough to be familiar with the rules. I wasn't asking for a rip. Just saying I'd love to get one.

Ah, thank you, Moth3r. I was pretty sure that was what was stated in the faq, but was looking for clarification.

Now I need to figure out how to legally get a R2 dvd of Stardust...

R2PAL or R2NTSC?

According to dvdcompare.net it's only the R2 UK release (PAL) that has the commentary.

I'm pretty sure that amazon.co.uk will deliver internationally, although there are probably cheaper options available.
