Info Wanted: Pittrek's "pure" '04 DVD/GOUT hybrid OT project...

(EDIT: I’ve re-named this thread since Pittrek has confirmed that he is working on doing what I have described in the 1st post below).

I apologize in advance if this question is too obvious, but I’ve seen some fan-edits in this forum that are hybrids of the '04 SE DVDs and the GOUT DVDs- but they seem to have other creative “touches” that deviate from the OOT.

I’m wondering if anyone so far had done a “pure” hybrid OT preservation project using the '04 DVDs for the shots where the SE alterations aren’t present or are extremely subtle (with color correction, obviously) and using the GOUT for the soundtrack and to replace the “offensive” scenes and shots where the SE changes are less subtle.

Just curious.

EDIT: I also consider “offensive” changes to be when trims were made to make scenes more “PC”, like in the scene where Luke enters the Deathstar control room and shoots the Imperial officer, some frames were trimmed so that you don’t actually see the blast hit his chest.

Hi, I am doing exactly that what you're talking about. I'm using both DVD releases to re-create the original versions of all 6 movies. The bad news is that I'm doing it for more than a year and I'm not still 100% satisfied with it.

Great! I'm glad to hear that someone is doing this. I'd love to do it myself, but I don't have the best computer, software, nor the knowhow to attempt something so ambitious.

There's nothing like ANH in my world I simply call the movie Star Wars.

The current status -
Episode 1 - done, but it's a combination of the official DVD and a DivX of the theatrical version, so the source changes are terribly visible. I'm currently working on "smoothing" the source changes.
Episode 2 - I think it's done, simply because I can't find a better source for the theatrical version.
Clone Wars - I have edited the 2 official DVDs together to make one movie, I plan to add there the title crawl from ADigitalMan's edit to make it more "complete".
Episode 3 - done, but the re-created transition in the only changed scene is kind of "jerky", I'm seriuosly thinking about redoing it once more.
Star Wars - done, it has all 5 existing sound mixes, but I have realised 2 things - the special edition changed the sky behind 3PO when he's aruing with R2 in the desert, so I have to change it back, and the restored mono mix is available, so I'm currently working on a new version. But I have a big problem, the Tantive 4 sequence. I have "recolored it" to be more stable and have correct colors, the uncompressed AVI looks perfect, but the resulting m2v has much worse colors. I plan to put some screenshots to the technical forum.
Episode 5 - the video track is ready.
Episode 6 - nothing yet
Bonus discs - only to SW (deleted scenes, holiday special and Making Of), I'm still searching for some unreleased prequel documentaries (I have absolutely nothing)

Sorry! I try to avoid using "ANH" when I can, but with the 6 films, it can get confusing.

Do you really think it's worth the trouble to change the sky behind 3PO? Is there that much of a difference?

okay, I am NOT trying to hi-jack this thread, but since you are all talking about trying to use those 2 source dvd's to make a hybrid of the original...I thought my question is somewhat relevant.

I am not trying to do that, but here is what I am wanting to do. I know the qaulity will not be DVD, but I am ok with that for myself. I have the original VHS tapes from the 80's (with original boxes) of all 3 OOT movies. I'd love to watch them again, as they are still in good shape. The problem is watching tapes wears them out, and I don't want to wear them out since no copy of the OOT is commerically available anymore. I wanted to somehow get/copy/whatever the audio and video from the VHS tapes onto the computer. Once the source material was on the hard drive, I wanted to author them into a dvd (dl if I need to, I don't want to compress as I want to minimize signal loss) and then burn my new authoried dvd so I can enjoy them with causing wear on the tape. My question is how to I start, how the heck do I do this. For DVD programs (some I've used, some just take up space), I think I have DVD styler, DVD flick, PgcEdit, DVDAuthorGUI, NuMenu4U, DVD-Rebuilder (I think I have the free and pro on here), The Film Machine, AVIDemux 2.3 plus, AVI2DVD, GUI for DVD author, DVD Builder (a trial I think), Movica, VobBlanker, and ReAuthorist. I think a few of these might be trails I havn't activated yet (not sure though). I have Mediacoder if it's needed. I might have DVD-Lab laying around here (it may be lost though). I know I've messed around with DVD Styler, DVD Flick, and mediacoder before on a few projects. I've only breifly used PgcEdit.

Anyways, what programs would I need to do this?Anyone that can point me in a direction so I can get a general idea of what I'd doing, I'd appericate it. I'd like to get started on this.

I figured I'd ask in here before I tried the Requests, How-To's, and Technical Discussions forum, since it was kind of relevant (seeing as it is a preservation of the OOT, like this thread, just with different source material).

You're not interested in the OOT DVDs that were released last September? It's fine if you're OK with the VHS, I'm just curious.

I already own the first SE dvd box set that was released, and I heard those DVD's were just the SE and the OOT on the same disc, correct? I've read too on hear that the OOT dvd's sucked and they were a LD transfer and some of the stuff was more messed up than the OOT vhs, etc. If I'm wrong correct me please. Most ppl on here I've read bash em, so I never got them, since I already have the box set and I didn't want to pay $15 per disc for a "crappy" OOT transfer (assuming what I read was true). IDK, after readig that I figured they wouldn't be any better than my original VHS. I admit I never watched em (the GOUT), I only know what I read on here. I'd rather have the true OOT on DVD but from what I've read lucas hacked the releases last sept (plz fill me in if I'm incorrect), so I guess I figured I'd try this.

...on a side note not related to star wars...I figured I'd be ok with VHS on this project since it could come in handy down the road. I have a few other things like barry sanders football games and old U of O football games (that I can't get on dvd) I'd like to transfer to dvd so they don't get worn.

The SEs and OOT aren't on the same discs, they're on separate discs.

The DVDs are from the digital masters that were created for the Definitive Collection and "Faces" LDs from the 1990s. To my eyes, the DVDs look better than the LDs (sharper, clearer, less video noise) but some others say the difference is negligible.

But, I feel safe in saying that they're definitely a HUGE improvement over the VHS. The resolution of the DVDs has to be at least double that of the letterboxed VHS releases (plus the SW DVD has the original crawl, which the LD and VHS don't).

I'm not sure what you mean about them being "more messed up" than the OOT VHS.
I do know that the 1995 "Faces" VHS releases were the last (and probably best) of the VHS releases.

I think the OOT DVDs are the best releases of the OOT so far, that is until the X0 project and/or someone here finishes their '04/GOUT hybrid DVDs.

I remember looking at that a couple of years ago, and being amazed (horrified?) at how many changes there were.

It's your project, YOU have to be happy with it. If you feel that it's worth the resolution trade-off, then that's your decision to make. I'd probably do the same thing if I were you. The new SE shot of Artoo in the canyon bugs me as well.

Having seen Adywan's SW 'revisited', it made me wonder how the various 'hybrid' projects are going. Seeing how well Ady removed the ronto and the stupid ring around the death star, etc., it made me more convinced that a near-flawless hybrid trilogy is possible.

 

I know there are at least a couple of such projects in the works....updates? :-)

PaulisDead2221 is working on just such a project as we speak (see link below). :) Looks like the results will be great. :) Apparently he's using the 2004 DVD set as the main source, then the 2004 alterations are being removed and replaced with the real scenes from the 2006 unaltered Star Wars trilogy DVD set (GOUT). Correct the colors in the 2004 DVD footage to match the quite accurate Star Wars colors from the 2006 GOUT set, plus convert the GOUT footage to anamorphic to match as close as possible to the 2004 footage, pull it all together carefully and sync it with the DD 2.0 soundtrack from the GOUT set, and you should have one very nice set of the unaltered Star Wars trilogy on DVD. :) http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Star-Wars-The-Vintage-Edit/topic/8069/
