If you read the original post, Brooks is looking for "the real Star Wars". No disrespect to Ady, but fan edits like Revisited are not what is being discussed here.

Is there a new member's guide??  Did I miss something : /

Jetrell - I got an epson 4490 display model last week from microcenter for $20 (can you believe that)?  I haven't had a chance to dig up my negatives and try it out yet.  I'll let you know how they look.  I wonder if it wouldn't be better to scan the individual frames of the various films everyone is restoring vs using a telecine.  Granted, I'm sure it would take much much MUCH longer but I imagine the quality would be better (right?).

As for my tapes, I got an ads pyro firewire dv converter years ago to capture the raw vhs footage of a show my friends and I did in college, it works pretty well, I may drag it out and try my widescreen star wars tapes.

I just got one of the Phantom Menace trailers...trailer B I believe, and would love to see that transferred as well but I obviously don't have the resources to do it myself.  Film transfers for archival purposes would be a great resource as well.  Congrats on entering the world of transfers...it can take a lot out of you.

Welcome to posting, btw.....  :)

I'll just throw in my 2 cents here...

Every version has its pros and cons. We're lucky to have a choice depending on what we think is more important.

If you're looking for the most purist version of the theatrical star wars, you'd probably want to look at something based on the 2006 theatrical DVDs. Dark Jedi has done a great job cleaning up the image for his V3 so I would recommend that if you're looking for something more "pure". Unfortunately the laserdisc master used for this version suffers from heavy DVNR (a noise reduction process) that heavily smears the image.

If you're looking for a good looking, high definition image, I would suggest Harmy's de specialized versions. This is basically a "recreation" of the original version using the BluRays or HighDef broadcasts as the main source, and other various sources to fill in the Special Edition additions. While the image quality is light years ahead of the Laserdiscs and exhibits none of the DVNR smear, it's not the original, original version (most of the original SFX composites are not present, frame doubling or slow down is needed to fill in gaps of missing frames, etc)

My personal favorite is the Harmy version since I can't stand the DVNR smear anymore.

What’s the internal temperature of a TaunTaun? Luke warm.

Puggo Grande "feels" the most like "Original Star Wars" to me, despite its scratchy video and wow-y audio quality, it's definitely got the "heart" of Star Wars missing from the official releases after 97.

I've got the dark jedi v3 versions, they're great.  I'm holding out for Harmy's new ones (and looking forward to the new dark jedi ones as well).  I'm going to get the puggo grande and check it out as well.

I captured my vhs widescreen sw tape for fun and compared it too the dark jedi version.  Predictably the vhs looks like poop.  I wonder if I should keep the capture or just toss it.

I was wondering:  do any of you remember the slides that came with the sw action figures in the late 90's?  I wonder what source they came from.  I'll scan a few when I get my scanner going.  I also remember that some stores like suncoast sold little strips of the 35mm film (like 4 or 5 frames) in a little collector case.  So the 35mm was available in a way, sort of, back in the mid-late 90's (it was probably special edition prints).

I captured my old widescreen vhs, and while it predictably doesn't look very good it looks better than I thought it would.  I captured it to DV and so I have this strange aspect ratio where the letterbox is contained inside the DV frame.  I could resize it but the ratio isn't the same so it would still have bars on the top and bottom, and also I worry that resizing might make the video look even worse, what do you guys think?  These are some random shots from a 2 minute export I did to test it.

I 'm sure those bars are there to account for TV overscan. This way, you're not losing information on either side of the image when you play it back on a CRT TV.

EDIT: NM, I see there's a contrast difference between the black in the letterbox sections and the side bars. Hm...interesting.

The sidebars are not as prominent on the UK PAL VHS releases....

it's neat that you were able to  put up that same shot, did you have the pal  vhs copies on your computer already?

I'll upload the little test I did to youtube tonight to see what you guys think, I'm wondering if it's worth keeping or not.

I have all my PAL VHS collection (Fullscreen, Widescreen, Executor Box Set) on an external HDD as well as about half of my "Star Wars collection" so I can check versions with a few mouse clicks......

All versions need capturing and preserving. There is no such thing as too many!!

Meanwhile, here are my Youtube clips for info

These stills look about 500% better than when I tried to do a capture of my 1992 vhs pal widescreen. It's worth keeping if this version is not available to you on a better or preferable format for the future.

Apologies Brooks for temporarily hi-jacking your thread. I picked up the very first 1984 VHS of Empire in a charity shop it was an ex-rental and really crudded up but had really clean whites on Hoth before it got chewed up, I then picked up the 1989 version which plays fine but the Hoth scenes now seem a little pink tinted. I don't know whether I imagined this. So my query is there a degeneration of the print across those versions. Can you check your tapes (maybe compare a still of the scene where Lukes in recovery station with a white wall) and see if there is a difference in colour. The crux of the question is - is the 1984 pal vhs the whitest hoth ever??

edit: or have i just got o.c.d.?

well youtube won't let me post my sample, it somehow recognized it as SW right away, any idea where else I can post a video sample?

One last point I will make is that looking at Luke in the foreground on the 1984 Fullscreen version, the facial scars and hair is far clearer and sharper than every other comparison shot. Maybe there is something "better" about the 1984 version.

+1, maybe the sharpness effects the perception of the colours somehow

vimeo works, we'll see how long until they take it down.

Anyways, here's some clips from my vhs capture, let me know what you think :)

this looks pretty damn good, nice and clean result for vhs - is this the tape that had never been played? which box set is it from?

Thanks!  It's from the 95 thx widescreen box set, and capturing it is the first time that tape has ever been played.  My empire and jedi are still in the box, they've never been played.  I also did a few things to it in premiere, I used the unsharp mask and neat video to clean  up the noise etc.

Do you think it's worth keeping?  Would anyone else have any use for it?  If so I can clean up the audio a good bit too, I haven't touched that yet.  What format do you guys use for archiving these things, just dvd or is there a better computer format (like h264 or the like?)
