Info Wanted: Faces vs. 1993 Definitive Collection - why the '93 DC LDs?

I believe it is due to the fact that the 1993 version was CAV format, while the 1995 version was CLV which introduced some image problems.

While CLV can potentially create a different visual, it's very minor, and newer players with frame-memory don't suffer this problem.

Personally, I like the Faces version, for its contrast and color. The "Definitive Versions" are rife with their own problems as well, a tradition that LFL/THX have been continuing with the recent DVD releases.

JediRandy: They’re certainly beyond any repair you’re capable of making.

Go-Mer-Tonic: I can’t say I find that very disappointing.

JediRandy: I won’t suck as much as a fan edit.

I prefer the definitive set over the Faces. The definitive set has much better color and less noise in my opinion, and for lack of a better word, just has a more pleasing image. You need to get one of the later pressings though were most of the errors were fixed.

Faces means the VHS release, right? I've only ever viewed the OOT on the Definitive Laserdiscs. What are the differences? I did notice a lot of fuzz and easily visible matte lines on the laserdiscs.

"Faces" is the colloquial term for the 1995 laserdisc releases (billed as "the last chance to own the original version of Star Wars"), so called because each disc cover has a different face on it:

(thanks Russ!)

According to davisdvd.com, the Definitive Collection discs had some ghosting/motion smearing due to the noise reduction applied. This apparently was toned down for the faces editions. (I have not seen any screenshots to prove this fact is true, however.)

Others have said the DVNR is the same on both. I'd like to know, as if they are different in that respect, it bodes well for the DVD release, as it would mean the DVNR was not applied during telecine.

We pray that is the case, but since all three will be on single layers, they will have to be softened a bit. Basically, we cannot win.

Has it been confirmed that the bonus disks will be single layer? I don't see how that can be the case, especially with the game demos and whatnot.

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

I'm sure they are double layers, as most bonus disks are, and it would seem to me that noise reduction filters would not be applied during telecine so maybe this will be okay.

No offense, but while that reasoning seams...uh, reasonable, that does not mean it will apply to the 77 version in any way, shape or form. I'm curious to know where your "as most bonus disks are" comment stems from.

I know, i guess I'm just optimistic. For instance the 2004 set bonus disk is dual layered.

Noise reduction filters should not be applied during telecine, but that doesn't mean they weren't. After all, classic films' negatives should not be taken apart to make unrecoverable changes...

Still, I appreciate your optimism about this and the dual-layer issue - and I hope you're right.

My guess would be that they'll be DL discs, if for no other reason than distributors seem to like it because it makes ripping them slightly harder. Doesn't mean squat about the quality of the encode, they could just fill the discs up with massive empty usless files. And now back to your reguarly scheduled topic...

...or you could argue that the VAST majority of what LEC has produced since 1999 HAS been worthless files
