How about if the Death Star II seemed at first like an empty, unfinished shell with the laser cannon not built yet, but when the Rebels fly towards it, a huge hidden cannon extends from within its depths? That might be able to add a "holy crap" feel to the scene.

The DS II is supposed to be 900km across, I think by the time any mechanism had moved the cannon to the surface, the Rebels would have scarpered halfway across the galaxy. And if it was unfinished, you'd be able to see inside it from some point anyway, wouldn't you?

 Hmm, true.

I think the best solution would be something like what Jaitea has done, something that is clearly visible but looks incomplete. For that to then be operational and start firing is surprise enough. I think anything more than that is overcooking it.

I was hopinh you'd repost those, I didn't want to scoop you and do it on your behalf. I think the firing crater on the first image is pretty much how I'd like to see it, or maybe a little more incomplete. Good stuff (as always).

That first pic also reminds me of something else, a face. The "hat" kinda makes it look Jewish, but I think it reminds me of Jason Voorhees in Friday the 13th part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan. One of the worst horror movies ever made with some of the worst make-up you've ever seen.

^That was a look inside your brain I wish I could erase.

I think one of the biggest problems I had with the DS2 is just the way it looks, to the degree that you have to think: is that really how they go about building stuff?

Don't you usually build a framework of a building and work your way up (or in this case, work your way out from the center)?  I understand that ILM had to come up with something that was instantly recognizable as both "a Death Star" and "under construction", but would there be a way to make it ... i dunno.... maybe not so much as "more realistic (per my own points about STAR WARS being STAR WARS)" but more "under construction" looking (per the image directly above)?

Hell, just looking at that pic above, how would it look to see Star Destroyer sized ships towing chunks of DS2 decks and showing them being fitted into the main body (be it during Vader's arrival or the Emperor's)?

Maybe the dish area could be left empty/open (to give the visual of the super laser being the last thing to be finished), so later when the Emperor uses it you can see the lasers coming from the core to the outer ring, then shooting and reconverging into the laser.  You could fill the void inside the dish (down to the reactor) with multiple layers of spiderweb like superstructure, to further emphasize the spider web behind the Emperor's chair.

But surely, given how big it is, such "component" building like in those pics is a little unrealistic? If it's 900km across I find it hard to believe traditional construction techniques really matter as regards a framework. Add to that the fact that it's being built in space, and I find it even less important. That's also one of my issues with the framework we see at the end of Episode 3, it looks like the DS I has a simple metal framework but at that scale those frames would be several kilometres thick. I don't think that's likely.

EDIT: Your additional idea about Star Destroyers or similar towing decks into place, I think the same point of scale applies. On such a massive structure, that's probably how it was done but you just wouldn't be able to see it.

Another problem is the fact that having huge holes in DSII would make having the Falcon go through by that twisted path pointless, if you can go straight to the core by the laser dish hole.

I also never understood why, once the shield generator had been disabled, no rebel ships seem to target the firing dish. Surely that's a target for at least one squadron? Destroy the firing points and you disarm the DS for a while at least.

According to Lando's dialog, all of the fighters that are left go into the tunnel. All 5 of them?

Haha, sounds about right! Maybe a few more fighters trailing in behind might sell it a bit better. We wouldn't have to see them for long, just an indication that more attempted to get in there.

Well, this is JEDI we're talking about too.  Wouldn't the Emperor's "now watch as the rebellion is destroyed by a fully operational battle station!" not only mean the super laser works, but that the DS2 has its own shields?  I would think that would be one of the first things you would make sure was functional...

All the fighters in red and gold group, if all the fighters went in who blew up The Executor bridge shield?

Please explain that comment.  I'd like to think that you were referring to a yamaluke, but even if you are the comment is pretty inappropriate.

Why?

I wouldn't complain if someone said a Dalek skirt makes them look Scottish.

Well, considering my Grandad was Jewish and my father-in-law was born in a camp in 1944, I don't think you can really accuse me of anything, which clearly you are. Keep your PC nonsense for your soapbox. There isn't one iota of offence in my comment. And yes, a yamaluke. Big deal. Get over it.

Bingo, be a dear and do a mock-up of that? I have to see that.
