Halloween H20 ratio help!!!

Author

I'm beginning to edit Halloween H20 but when I import the video into Womble, I'm getting black bars on both sides of the picture. If I click on the display options, it tells me that it is 4x3. But on the box it says it's ratio is 2.35:1 enhanced for 16x9 televisions. What? How do I get it to 16x9 with free ware? I can't buy any programs, and I'm at a total loss!

It is Cinemascope (2.35:1) so you will get black bars.

You could try DVD Rebuilder Pro to make it anamorphic

Yes you will get black bars, but they should be top and bottom, not on both sides!

Can you load the video into VirtualDubMod? This will show you whether it's a problem with Womble or the video file itself.

Once I import the video from DVD Decrypter the extension says that it is 4x3. Does this mean I have to change it? I attempted to follow A DigitalMan's guide, but once I get to VirtualDubMod, it only does 2 minutes of the movie. It says that it can only do so much on a FAT32 drive. Am I screwed?

If the filename of the video extracted with DVD Decrypter says 4:3, then the video is almost certainly 4:3. Have you extracted the correct title?

The maximum size of a file on a FAT32 drive is 4GB. You will need to enable file splitting for any file larger than this.

Even if I figured out how to get the whole movie through virtualdubmod, I don't have TMPGEnc, so I guess his puts an end to this project, right? Apparently, some burnout decided that th H20 Region 1 DVD is better suited as 4x3, while R4 gets 16x9 treatment!

I definitly know that it's 4x3, so how do I fix it?

What you want to do is what many people have done to the 2006 GOUT edition of the Star Wars trilogy. That is; make anamorphic widescreen (ie. 16x9) video out of a letterboxed source. I think there's a thread around here somewhere. Mothe3r may be able to point you in the right direction.

I personally would track down a copy of the R2 UK DVD on ebay. While the R4 is anamorphic widescreen it has a few artifacts. The R2 UK DVD has a better transfer (and is still 16x9).

Try QuEnc or HC Encoder - both are freeware.

Okay, I used the HC encoder and the video turned out perfect, but when I put it into womble, the audio goes out of synch with the new video. It starts out fine, but quickly transitions throughout the film.

I don't know if it helps but this happens to me if I change the framerate and forget it. Just for sure check the framerate of the original movie and of the movie created in HCE

No, that's not it.

Okay, i was looking at H20 region 2 and apparantly it is PAL, will this work here in Canada? Does it matter once I run it through DVD Decrypter? Will it even operate in my laptop?

Running it through DVD Decrypter will remove the region coding but it will still be PAL. Your laptop will play it fine but your DVD player or TV may not be compatible.
