Now that I have the video side of things done I'd love to be able to combine it with the Faces audio. Has anyone written up a tutorial on that?

The same process applies for any PCM audio. Bear in mind that stereo PCM uses a very high bitrate, so your MPEG-2 stream must be encoded very conservatively with respect to maximum bitrate, otherwise the muxing will fail.

I posted these in my thread, but I thought I'd put them here too, in case anyone was interested.  These are the '93 laserdisc tracks, but with a few minor alterations.  In Star Wars, the cell bay shootout has been replaced with the equivalent section from the '77 stereo mix, to remove those annoying smashing glass sounds, and part of the 'deceleration' sound from the mono mix has been added as a rear-channel effect when the Falcon emerges from hyperspace.  In Jedi, the deleted music from Luke and Ben's conversation on Dagobah has been re-inserted.  No changes to Empire.  Multiple RARs due to file size, which will combine into FLACs.

Seconded - this is really fantastic, thank you h_h!

Ok, quick tech question which pertains more to this discussion of the original PCM than our 5.1 talk elsewhere - with an old-school DPL surround track such as this, does the stream on the DVD (either PCM or encoded into AC3) need to be 'flagged' as DPL, or does the receiver just *know*?

I couldn't see a simple flagging option in any of the encoders I've looked at, but that doesn't necessarily mean it isn't needed in this sort of scenario...

With a PCM track, there is no way for the receiver to know if the audio contains matrixed surround information (i.e. Dolby Surround) or is just plain stereo. You need to press the button yourself.

A Dolby Digital (AC3) stream can carry a flag to indicate the format of 2/0 encoded programs. Decoders can use this to drive a Dolby Surround indicator, or it can be used to automatically control the Dolby Surround Pro Logic decoder. Decoders may ignore and/or override this flag, so the user has final control over the stereo or Dolby Surround listening modes.

Ah, that clears that up then - cheers Moth3r.

Though it would be a good idea to put both the original DPL and the 5.1 upmix (as per the other thread) on the same disc to do an easy A/B comparison. The only snag is the combined bitrate - there probably won't be room for high quality video AND high quality stereo AND 5.1.

I wouldn't think that would be necessary. You will probably get a better result from hardware doing the DPL decoding than you will having software doing it, and in the process compressing it.

Have a look at the other thread (adding LFE to GOUT) - that's the only reason for attempting the 5.1.
