I’ve got an idea I’ve been kicking around for a year or so for black comedy where someone finds a human tooth in their meal at a fancy dinner party and it’s a catalyst for all of the decorum and social niceties gradually breaking down completely. It’s heavily influenced by Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, and I’d probably shoot it in 1.85:1 and black and white to help achieve that vibe. I actually recently purchased a new Canon DSLR that could probably handle it, so maybe I’ll start working on it in earnest some time soon.

I think if I were to make a movie, I think I’d to make it with old technology. Make it exactly the same way they did in the 30’s, 40’s, or 50’s. I don’t know it would be in glorious black and white or three-strip technicolor(and I don’t mean a digital re-creation, I mean the real thing). I wouldn’t want to use any newer technologies, or techniques. I would want it to be as old fashion as possible.

I too like to spend unnecessarily excessive amounts of money and do things as inconveniently as possible to get similar results.

I’d make Dune and film it entirely in anamorphic 65mm (like Ben-Hur or The Hateful Eight), so it’d be a 2.76:1 AR.

But Denis Villeneuve’s Dune (assuming it doesn’t fall apart before it gets made) might make this moot if it’s as good as Prisoners, Arrival, or Blade Runner 2049.

I imagine it’d be tricky getting ahold of usuable '30s-'50s film stock, and processing equipment from those decades probably doesn’t exist anymore.

I don’t want similar, I want genuine.

make new '30s-'50s film stock. make new processing equipment that is exactly the same as the old.

make new '30s-'50s film stock.

That’s like asking for new antiques.

make new processing equipment that is exactly the same as the old.

Ridiculous. Soon you’ll be asking for new releases on LaserDisc.

There’s no reason you can’t achieve the same look as older films using modern equipment and film. As long as there are no digital passes and the production is handled in a way that is influenced by that time period, I don’t see why that couldn’t be accomplished.

Army of Darkness: The Medieval Deadit | The Terminator - Color Regrade | The Wrong Trousers - Audio Preservation
SONIC RACES THROUGH THE GREEN FIELDS.
THE SUN RACES THROUGH A BLUE SKY FILLED WITH WHITE CLOUDS.
THE WAYS OF HIS HEART ARE MUCH LIKE THE SUN. SONIC RUNS AND RESTS; THE SUN RISES AND SETS.
DON’T GIVE UP ON THE SUN. DON’T MAKE THE SUN LAUGH AT YOU.

I know, I was responding to Warb, not you. My point is that he shouldn’t need such scrutiny for the end result he desires. Though it would be nice if classic technicolor was still around.

Yeah, but it’s good to try at least.

I would like to make all my films without digital passes. Digital editing though, the old fashion way looks like hell.

Meaning you would do all image processing analog but then have it scanned and assembled digitally? What about color timing? Seems like itd be pretty hard to get a good color grade doing it before editing. Or would you scan it, edit it together, save it back to film again then do a color pass?
