Well it’s good you have your priorities straight. Of all the problems in the world, teens not getting to smoke should definitely be at the top of all our lists.

What one’s prirorities should he is completely subjective. I’m also aware that we don’t have the best history together, so I’m going to assume that if someone else made the exact same post, you wouldn’t have cared, let alone suspect trolling.

However, the “forbidden fruit” effect means that the more people you forbid from doing something, the more of those people do it. More people stop drinking on their 21st birthday than start. The drinking age is 21 because of drunk driving, and there’s no such thing as smoked driving. Also of interest is that the states where the smoking age is 19 still want to raise it to 21. Did you have any 19-year-old or 20-year-old friends?
Somewhat related is that when I was 14-17, my parents forbade me from having any friends so I immersed myslef in the Star Wars universe to give myself hope. The destruction of the Sith at the end of ROTJ to me symbolized the possibility that I would one day break free from my parents and have friends, so I became passionate about the Sith never returning, hence Frink’s grudge against me.

I edited my post after you responded to it. I wouldn’t have been interested in sex, drugs, and rock and roll if I had friends. I just wanted friends to play video games and see movies with.

Giving all 18-20 yr olds the right to smoke is one of the dumbest crusades I’ve ever heard of, and I would say the same no matter if it came from you or Jay or my wife or Obama or Harrison Ford or my boss or the Stay-Puft Man or anyone else you can think of.
I don’t care about your feelings about the Sith, I cared that you made every single issue and post about it.

I want to come back to this. Your priorities, while completely whacked-out, are your own. But by writing government representatives about it (or saying we should) you’re suggesting it should be everyone’s priority, and that’s completely insane.
Unless, once again, you aren’t serious. I still haven’t seen any evidence to suggest that, however.

I also want to add that the precedent is damgerous. If 18-20 aren’t adults on one thing, what’s to prevent 18-20 year olds from loosing other rights in the future? What if it leads to the 26th amendment getting repealed? What if the pipe-smoking characters in the OT and Marion Ravenwood get censored for “setting a bad example?”

I actually agree with this.
I want to agree, but at the same time it’s not really the principle America was founded on. If an adult wants to kill him or herself with a vice like cigarettes, that’s not my business. It’s my business when they are puffing in my face, and since smoking has generally been outlawed in most places I would have to worry about it, I’m fine with the way things are right now.

Maybe he works for Big Cig?
Big Cig actually wants to raise the legal age in order to increase the “forbidden fruit” appeal. They have sponsored legislation to raise the smoking age many times and studies show that a higher smoking age makes more people smoke, not less.
