It means "black" to me...comes from the Latin word for that colour.

Jesus Christ, you can't even spell it out to illustrate your point? You really have to say "n-word"? I would never use it to describe anyone, and using the word in a normal circumstance is something I agree should never be done, but seriously, as just an example of a word that has similar intentions as what the meme is implying, I really can't just type the word? I'm not advocating it's use. It was an example of a racial slur, not a condolence of it's use. Are we to the point where racial slurs can't even be named, even in a condemning way? And believe me, I don't approve of it's intended use. I merely used it as an example of a racial slur. And saying it doesn't mean anything to me is also false. I obviously don't know what it's like to be black and I clearly don't have the insight to what it feels like to hear the word used, (and I wouldn't ever use it in any other context), however it does offend me when people use it haphazardly. Growing up my best friend was black and I was part of his family. They all called me the white shadow (after some tv show about basketball I think... I also played basketball). Also I dated an african american for a while. She was really nice, in fact if she hadn't gone away to school we might still be together. I liked her alot. Think we didn't get looks? Obviously this is nothing significant in terms of understanding it, but it does at least mean SOMETHING to me.
Anyway, sorry I offended anyone. I fixed it now, is that better?

Bottom line is you don't need to use the full word, because everybody knows what the "N-Word" is refering to. Nobody would think you were refering to people being Nepalese.

While I agree with this, I find it funny that everyone needs to spell out all other foul words that some might find offensive. Why not just say "F-word"?
Which F-word are you referring to? The one that rhymes with "duck" or the one that rhymes with "maggot"?
Either or both, though I initially meant the former.

I'd still like to know why you used it in a comparison with the word philistine.

What, I'm supposed to click every mysterious, unlabeled link around here?
Equating fuck with the n-word is ludicrous. The other f-word not as much.
Anyway, it's obvious why Possessed spelt it out: so that he could go on a tirade against political correctness when people objected.
Why might you be so certain? Did not his explanation make sufficient sense to allow the matter to rest as stated?

False, it was more of an oversight than anything I didn't anticipate that much of a reaction. I mean if I had used it to label a person or group of people or anything like that I would understand and would have deserved it. Maybe I deserved it anyway, but I hardly see how one post counts as a tirade. I'm sorry that I was so uncouth as to spell out the complete word, I was not advocating it's use as a racial slur, I was merely providing an example of a racial slur. It's true I could have just said "n-word" and gotten the point across, and I probably should have, it was just an f-wording oversight people, J-word C-word, relax and move on, I won't do it again. Anytime you wanna stop talking about it would be fine with me.

Yes. It was a mistake, I shouldn't have said it, but as I've repeatedly said I don't condone it's use it was just an example. Can we please stop the bandwagon now? The first three or four people to reply made their point, and it is a valid one and I concede, there's no need for half a page worth of people repeating it.

A poorly conceived analogy showing what is a racial slur and what isn't, referring to the then-ongoing debate of if phillistine was or was not a racial slur. If you didn't understand the point I was trying to make then I'm sorry. But I'm fairly certain you did and are just trying to drag out my humiliation. I've already admitted it was a mistake, what more do you want?

Yes, thankyou.
No problem. Sorry I offended you.
Can we move on now? Or are there some last minute digs some of you need to get in first to make yourselves feel better?

All I'm trying to do is understand why you think the term philistine is racist. If you said that was a mistake, I missed it, and I apologize.

I don't think he thought that, it was DrCrow that thought philistine was a racial slur.

I didn't, I was trying to explain why it isn't racist. I was saying phillistine is just a race, like african american, and that it was not like the "n-word". I was saying that spelling out the word was a mistake. Warbler is correct, it was others (don't recall if it was Crow or not) who thought it was racist, and I was saying it wasn't. Or trying to anyway. Clarity in words isn't my strongest quality.

Is it now? Many African-Americans are even comfortable when white people say it, deliberately reducing the offensiveness of it and even using it as a joking term of affection. Example: in high school (I swear I've shared this story before), a black friend and I would jokingly say to each other, "What's up, my n.....?" But nope, it's much better to be offended than to neutralize the potency of such words.
Meanwhile, saying things like "mother f-er," which is literally calling someone incestuous, should not be so offensive. Or saying things like G-D- shouldn't offend, never mind that one is literally cursing God for whom many have immense respect and love.
To me, it's ludicrous to allow a word to offend so much. It perpetuates racism rather than the banning of it does to erase racism.
This is why I am passionate about racist topics. Not only am I tremendously against racism, but I'm also against the political correctness that does more to promote division rather than break it down.
The word was used several times in the wonderful movie To Kill a Mockingbird. It was said deliberately by the actors!
It was spelled out on purpose by Mark Twain in writing Huckleberry Finn! Can you believe it?
But Possessed, who clearly was not intending to promote its usage, is hanged by his thumbs for his analogy, which was in face against racism. Gosh, it just annoys me how PC overrules reason and our desire to prevent offends requires human sacrifice.
