Idea: Fan Edit of ROTJ

 (Edited)

I was wondering if anyone is working on an edit of Jedi? I read some really cool ideas for it on the ranch thread (page 5) that would make it so much more fulfilling…the trouble is now I cant stop thinking about it…

Im pretty surprised I havent seen any around yet, as its ripe for it…I would try it myself but so far I havent been able to find any tutorials for editing on MACs…has anyone found anything that would be helpful on that? I hope the new thead is welcome, I searched for it but aside from the ranch was unsuccessful.

Hey stossmo!

Our ideas in the Starkiller Ranch Thread are indeed going toward an eventual RotJ edit. We're starting with Episode I, so it will be a while before we get there. We're all very exciting about a retooling of RotJ, and as you've already seen we've got a lot of promising ideas floating about. If you want to add to the discussion we'd be more than happy for any input you may have.

I totally have "alternate Jedi" on the brain now too, dude! For some reason, I always wanted to see a version of Jedi where Luke has a blue saber, probably because I have a ton of 1st grade nostalgia for those early trailers. And the poster. and the action figure. Plus I thought blue would go better with the "moodyness" of the final duel. The green one vs. the overly pink one seems really gaudy.

Really, Zion? ALL the information? I don't see the Starkiller Ranch thread on there...

Who do you have to petition to get it up there?

would'nt changing Luke's Saber to blue be like changing vader's blue saber to red in revenge of the sith?

One edit I want to see:

"Revenge of the Jedi"

The overall feel of the film would have to be darkened somewhat, and it would have to be re-edited so Luke sets out to kill vader and have his Revenge.

all the silly muppet footage and ewok stuff would have to go too!

“Always loved Vader’s wordless self sacrifice. Another shitty, clueless, revision like Greedo and young Anakin’s ghost. What a fucking shame.” -Simon Pegg.

Just send a private message to myself or zion, and if we're feeling particularly benevolent that day it might get added.

(BTW I've just carried out a small update).

so would anyone like to discuss how this can go down...planning is half the battle. even if no one is ready for it maybe it will serve a good purpose...we could just bs for a bit, work out some ideas..maybe.

Sooo...
Are you looking for a storehouse to put a bunch of editing ideas? Well, that could work. I personally would like to see such an area independent of the Ranch thread. Maybe something non-specific that wouldn't have to conform to any other edits.
I'd really like to see a ton of sample clips here.

That's a good idea. As far as Jedi goes, I think it's probably the movie that could benefit the most from one of these re-cuts. It would be interesting to approach it like a good movie in trouble, like Star Wars was, and make a lot of subtle changes. After watching the dvd extras, I'm convinced Paul Hirsch is the unsung hero of the trilogy, and his absence hurt Jedi more than Gary Kurtz'. He clearly was ruthless about keeping it tight and had a good bullshit-meter. Just for example, I doubt he would have allowed the briefing room scene to be so jokey and devoid of tension. Just cutting won't really help Endor, though. We now have six movies worth of detailed, exotic worlds...and California. Maybe changing the time of day would help, some mist, some shafts of sunlight. We know Lucas has a hard-on for dusk/magic hour. When he did the special eds., I was hoping he'd add in some big, humming David Lynch-y machinery/refineries here and there, to show how the Empire was industrializing the place. (exploiting/polluting the "green moon" was a part of the original script, I believe). 3 or 4 matte paintings and some interesting sound fx underneath would've done a lot.

That could be interesting. Something that made the Imperial Presence on Endor more of a threat. Regarding sctructures, I think I'd try to do something with the destruction of the shield generator. For such a big explosion, Han got out of it awfully easily.

Han was running from the door of the "secret" bunker, which was a small part of the main generator building. I always thought the main building, with the satellite dish, had the bigger explosion.

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

Erik, you have it right. I guess I was saying that it didn't present itself very well on film. There was a whole series of shots of the rebels sneaking down a few corridors to the shield control room and fighting their way through stormtroopers. Losing this sub-plot distorted the real size of the bunker.

GL really need to release all those damn deleted scenes. well i think a good Revenge of the Jedi edit would rock cuz (although ROTJ is one of my fav.'s) its kinda like the TPM of the OT.

For Jedi, how about cutting out some of those static shots in the throne room of Vader just staring at the camera. It totally dumbs down the viewer and makes his redemption less of a surprise than it could be. (Look at Vader, he's thinking, he's going to do something important!) What about piecing some of the scenes together so it doesn't cut to a different location every minute like during the throne room, endor battle and death star II attack?

Also: no Sarlacc cg beak
Must have Lapti Nek and Sebastian Shaw

Take back the trilogy. Execute Order '77

I think the parallel action is effective in principle, it's just that the three strands are not equal in tension. The weakest is clearly Endor. Here's something I posted in MagnoliaFan's thread a while back, which might be more appropriate here:

MagFan,

long ago, before this forum, before there were prequels, I had a plan to re-edit RotJ (shock, horror, scandal). It never happened, as there was no DVD then and no access to 5.1 mixes. Now I know you are going to do all the movies eventually so I'd like to request for you to incorporate the main feature of my old plan: re-dub the Ewoks. Of course, judging by your prequels, you may well already be planning this. The idea wouldn't be to give them subs like your JarJar & Nemoidians, since I think it works that we don't know what they're saying, but just to change the tone of their characters. Okay, they look like teddy bears. Nothing can be done about that (CG wookiees?). But I think a lot of their silliness comes from the way they sound. If they had deeper, more guttural voices (think Samurai warriors in Kurosawa's films) they would be far less cute, and seem more serious, which would make their eventual victory over the imperial troops much more believable. This would be helped by removing their most comical antics like the guy who accidentally wraps his bolas around himself and so on. Just wanted to share this with you - I'm sure whatever you come up with will be great.

I wonder how feasible it'd be to alter some of the ewok arrows/catapults into whizzing fire arrows, etc. I know they're supposed to be primitive but I'm pretty sure they had fire. Kinda like the opening battle of Gladiator. I know people have done their own lightsabers, but I assume fire/sparks would be harder.

Fire! I made FIRE!!!

I likes it. Or rather if you want to take the changes in a slightly different direction, I am sure that there are tons of forest battle movies and shows, etc. to borrow footage of arrows and explosions from.

That would be really cool, in the ranch thread it was suggested to use the Jedi radio show because threepio had a lot of extra lines about the ewoks needing to understand how they fit into the struggle against the empire, and it resulted in explaining thier involvement better, so what if we play with that idea and fade to some scenes of deforestation while the exchange between 3po and luke happens...who knows. I cant really think of any movies to use for that though, but the scenes in TTT of the dead marshes above mordor gave me a little inspiration (not that I think that would be appropriate)

Flaming arrows, re-dubbing the ewoks to sound more badass and snipping little unessessary scenes out could tighten up the middle alot. Does anyone really need to see the whole speeder jacking by that ewok? I say we realize that he took off, he lured most of the guards away from the bunker and we move on. right? who cares if he ended up dead? I would almost prefer to assume he did. the tragic hero

Tatooine needs to be re-worked, with placing luke's visit with yoda in the beginning and letting us assume that he spent the last couple of years finishing his training (and explaining how his skills matured so quickly) and taking out a lot of the silliness is most important. I think it could stand to lose ten minutes and still get the point across. Then he comes in last to rescue the rescue teams, the last resort. im going to work on tatooine because for the most part it doesnt need any special extra scenes added in, just some juggling and cutting here and there...Im not sure how to even start with endor.

what about the space battle, aside from lando's copilot it doesnt bother me very much. and maybe we could subtitle him to be more interesting. I like the suggestion of not cutting in between the skywalkers, endor and space quite so much.

Other than a couple of scene division differences (the impact which of can't be seen unless presented with the surrounding scenes), there's no change in this script from the original scenes. Granted there are a few deleted and/or never filmed bits here and there, but those aren't available to be used in an edit. Sorry, I just don't see what you were trying to accomplish with this.
