Idea: A New Direction - Special Edition Preservation?

 (Edited)

Assuming all turns out well this September, we’ll have the theatrical and 2004 editions of the trilogy available on DVD. All that leaves is the 1997 edition. The SE trilogy may well be the ugly pupa of Lucas’s metamorphosis, the unlovable middle child, or whatever, but it’s still a distinct version of the trilogy, and it hasn’t received much love and attention from the fan preservation community. There’s some DVDs out there, but they’re harder to find than the OOT, and they don’t seem to have been put together with the same eye to detail as the OOT discs. I tried to make a DVD backup of my VHS copy, but Macrovision defeated me. In the event that the 2006 OOT discs are all we’ve ever wanted, is there any possibility that attention would be paid to the 1997 SE?

I would be interested for completists sake. I would probably only watch them once just for nostaligia or whatever. I imagine in ten years when there have been two more revisions made to the OT looking at the original special edition will be amusing.

Oh god. O-SE Preservation. Theres too much Star Wars!

I take back what I said now that I think about it. The ending for Rotj SE was actually preferred over the original to me so that one should be preserved.

Off topic, but...

The new series of Doctor Who has been great so far. I urge all you non-UK members to get the XviDs. (Yes, it is Rose Tyler and Sarah Jane Smith together in the above picture).

It's great to see this edition doing the rounds. However this set has a major cosmetic flaw in one of the menus and I've already addressed that with a new release. Perhaps I should put that on the PIF train starting with DJ and Rikter.

If you could also get it to the UK also, that would be ace.

I've been thinking about this lately, too.

Any thoughts on what's out there? I've seen a few "5-Star Collection" up on Ebay. How do they stack up?

I'm hoping to get the three 1997 SE films with their trailers and the "making-of" docs as extras. Is there anything like that out there now?

The 5 Star collection is nothing more than average.

The best SE Trilogy set is the GKar version which is a German DVB recording and has a German crawl and subtitles.

Following that in an all English format is the TB Release which is a Scandanavian DVB recording. This set has an on-screen graphic in the top right corner.

Both are PAL.

I am sure that the talented ones out there could take these two sets to make one perfect version, preferably in NTSC so that the films run at the correct speed and are the correct length.

I had never noticed the PAL 4% speed-up before until it was mentioned here but now I am buying all my fave films again in R1 NTSC so that they run correctly.

allegedly done by the same people who did dual layer silvers of the Indy trilogy (which I have) if they did as good a job as those they should be very watchable.

The 5 Star set isn't too shabby. Until I make my own (or depending on how Darth Editous's turns out) the 5 star set is the version I watch.

this is a plain copy-paste of my collection of SE. if you look closely I bet you can understand which comment goes where.
I hope this can be of help, as I cannot upload the XLS file anywhere right now.

Edited because it was completely unreadable.
here's a temporary link for the XLS file:

The Classic Re-re-re-release of Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back.
In this version the word "WOOKIE" has been changed to "HAIR CHALLENGED ANIMAL" and the entire cast has been digitally replaced by Ewoks.

I hate the SEs but I also hate cinematic history to disappear, good or bad.
So yeah, the SEs as they were probably should get a digital preservation, but I won't be watching it

There is. Dark Jedi did a transfer of the '97 SE laserdiscs onto DVD. It also has the making of documentary as a bonus disc, as well as a trailer for each film.
If you want more Making of Documentaries, get OCPMovie's Special Edition Hype disc. It has three TV documentaries on it. I think between those two, most of the '97 SE stuff is accounted for.
