How to?

Hey guys, I have alot of time coming up during winter break and I wanted to start doing fan edits and such at the best possible quality so if my source is on DVD and I want to extract both the Audio and video, what is the preferred method to do so and what editing software should I be using (I'm currently using Vegas Video 4.0, but it's limited sometimes to what formats it accepts)

In the past I've ripped video to AVI using clonedvdmobile and edited in vegas video and exported to MPEG or AVI - only problem is that for a relatively short file, those end up being many GB, so I'm afraid to attempt a full fledged movie edit

Thanks in advance for all your help and advice!

edit: just found adigitalman's pinned thread above - if anyone still wants to answer specific questions I asked, I'm all ears!

To reduce the size of an AVI file without losing quality, consider compressing with a lossless codec such as Lagarith or Huffyuv.
