How to extract BTM lost scenes?

Author
Time
I'm trying to extract the deleted scenes from ANH available on the Behind the Magic CD for use in my fan edit. I have a policy of getting the necessary materials myself, otherwise I would have just ripped them from Deleted Magic. Problem is, the second disc is not compatible with the software I use to extract DVDs. Within the disc is an Install folder with a few readme's in them, an AutoRun setup information file, the BTM application icon, and two "bundle" files, one with a .000 extension, and another with a .001 extension. The latter holds the vast majority of the disc's contents, so I feel the movies are in there somewhere. I looked up several tutorials on opening .001 files, but all the suggested programs (most recommended WinRAR) couldn't read it. Any help?

If they aren't zip or rar, then they're probably propriatory (If I'm not mistaken, there were weird decompressors that would be cheaper to license, for the job, than a big-name). The installation program would unpack/decompress the bundle files. Just let it install to the hard drive, and find your files there. It might need compatability mode, on XP, I dunno.

One day I found... 10 years had got behind me. Next day was worse.

Thanks for the tip, but still no joy. The actual folder that is installed is only 1.58 MB large. They don't give me the option of installing the contents to the hard drive. Anyone else have any ideas? I wish OCP hadn't gotten himself banned so he could tell me how he did it.

Caught me in an assumption. Interesting, sounds like they didn't want the files floating around everywhere. Probably all stored in a flat-file. if it's not encrypted you might be able to search out the files and clip them out, assuming they aren't some bizzare codec. You might end up having to capture the screen with something like Techsmith Snagit (payware). You'd be converting the video anyway, you could capture it to a lossless codec, like huffyuv.Huffyuv .

Anyway, if there's a better answer, this'd be the place.

I only know of captures while the program was running. Some better than others.

No one has been able to rip the files right from the disc as far as l know.

The Behind the Magic CDRom is one huge file. No way to extract them. I got them with multiple screen capture programs many, many years ago.

The same here. The first time we did this was running the program on one computer and using a screen capture program on a second compy to grab it. Pain in the rear.

Deleted Magic has these scenes in a decent quality in the DVD-ROM file.

The ones from Deleted Magic came from my captures and that was the best I could get. In addition to a screen capture I had also done a PC>HI8 tape>PCAVI but the quality was lacking. But my screen capture files were silent. I believe he used the video from one file and audio from the other in Deleted Magic.

I can see why. I have acquired a program that can record the scenes, but have stumbled upon a problem. Whenever I play the scenes in question, the audio is HORRIBLY out of sync. I even went so far as to shut down every process that wasn't necessary for system stability to make sure there would be no slowdown, but the problem still exists. I'll try it with compatibility wizard, but if that doesn't work, I'll have to rip the audio and match it up to the lips. Does anyone else have this problem with their BTM CD? All for scenes whose quality will make their insertion nothing short of jarring to all viewers. Such is the life of a deleted scenes junkie.

Anyway, their presence won't be nearly as jarring as the insertion of the fullscreen Vader and Chief Bast scene into the widescreen 2004 DVD, or the insertion of the Droid Ship scene into AotC. I'll get a real laugh out of that. Speaking of which, I got OCP's permission to use the Droid Ship scene from Deleted Magic, since $40 for a four-minute scene from Hyperspace is pretty steep (although I'm tempted to do it anyway; are there any other Hyperspace-only scenes?), and he said he made no alterations to it. However, there seems to be a DivX watermark stuck to the bottom-right corner of said scene. Is there something I have to buy to make that go away, or is it attached to the original file? It's going to look (even more) tacky on my fan-edit DVDs.

Oh, and MERRY NEW YEAR!

Other CUT scenes on hyperspace? No, that's it.

I've never run into the problem, so I don't know. It might just be on playback:

I don't know if the 2nd link costs you money.

If it's burned into the video, there are different logo removers that may or may not do a very clean job.

Thank you all very much! It looks like I'm good to go. The first link fixed the watermark problem, and getting the audio on BTM synced up is just a matter of patience. I'm still deciding what to call my edits. Hmm...

Isn't the quality of the clips a bit higher on the Return Of The Ewok DVD than on Deleted Magic?

You might be right...

OCP did get better quality captures of the cut scenes just after he released Deleted Magic. I wouldn't be able to campare the DVD-ROM files of DM and ROTE until I got home tonight.

Did anyone ever manage to rip the audio of GL's commentary for the ROTJ screenplay? Russs15 was trying to do it for me for my 'Returning to Jedi' project, but I thin kit kept crashing his computer. If anyone can do this within a week I would love to chance to see if any of it would work in my project.

Thanks

GRRRR!!!! I've tried screen recorder after screen recorder after screen recorder, but the voices keep misaligning! Can anyone give me an idea on how to stop that? If not, then I need help ripping the audio from the AVI so I can realign it. The problem is, the video hits little bumps here and there, where it sticks for a few frames, then starts up again. With a DVD, I could just fix this by chopping out the "extra frames," but this solution is ineffective because, while the video stops, the audio keeps trucking on.

I think I did this ages ago back in my scumm days. I'll have to find a copy of BTM and see if I can still extract the files, or find the ones I extracted already.

Yep I found all my old tools, all I need now is the BTM cd if anyone has it.

Hey, I have it!
I found it in one of the boxes that I hadn't yet unpacked.
Let me know what movies you want from it and I can extract the directly from the bundle files as an image sequence and a wave file.
The quality of the images isn't great, but I can do a bit for bit perfect extraction of the ones on the BTM discs, so it is as good as it is ever going to get unless someone steals the negs.

Laserman, how much video content is there? I suppose if there isn't much that perfect extractions of all the video content would be a good basis for a BTM preservation DVD.

The raw images and wavs from which parts?
I don't really have the time to find and decode every last piece of the whole thing at the moment, there is a lot of content on there.

Thanks loads, Laserman! All I need are the four Lost Scenes from the Scene by Scene section.

Sorry, I haven't seen the discs yet. People keep saying there's a lot of material there. I keep forgetting that. Are there any Empire cut scenes? That would be great for me right now. Would it be possible for lesser-knowledgable users to perform your extraction method? Are the tools readily available?

You can go about your business. Move along, move along.

At the moment the 'tools' are a bunch of command line kludges written in machine code that run in DOS. (I'm old OK...)

If I get time I'll stick a GUI on top and make them usable, but at the moment I'm doing a few extractions so it is quick for me to add specific ones to the list while I am at it.

Or, I could just extract the entire discs to their files, (i.e. unpack the bundle files into the 4000 or so actual files that are on the discs) and then other people could go about decoding the video files, jpegs etc. using the tools that are already out there. I just haven't got time to go through all the files and do the conversions, but I can quickly change my code to unpack the entire discs.

This would leave you with all of the jpgs and text, and all of the video in lucasarts file formats (which there are converters out there that will then convert those to an avi or an image sequence) and then you guys can go nuts converting each piece of video for your own projects.
