How to extract BTM lost scenes? — Page 2

Or, I could just extract the entire discs to their files, (i.e. unpack the bundle files into the 4000 or so actual files that are on the discs) and then other people could go about decoding the video files, jpegs etc. using the tools that are already out there.
Laserman, if you did that, assuming it isn't too much hassle for you, then I'm sure some ambitious person would take on a 'decoding' project.

Well I think it would be just the video that would need decoding, the JPGs and text all get decoded by my app.
I can supply another app to decode the videos into png sequence and .wav file for anyone that wants to do it.

Absolutely no idea, the disc is so insanely nested, like I said there are about 4500 files on Disc 1 and a few thousand on Disc 2, I don't think much of it is video, but there is a tonne of stuff on those discs all up.

There are only 4 cut scenes on the BTM disc. The Luke/Treadwell scene, the 2 Anchorhead scenes and the rough cut of the cantina sequence.

These scenes have already been captured with a decent quality, but they really need a serious capture and clean up. At first, I wouldn't have thought it possible, but after seeing some of the work on this site I'd bet we could do some awsome things with them.

I've already converted the Anchorhead scenes for someone else, so I might as well up them for anyone that wants them.

They are a straight extraction from the disc, so no quality loss at all, but the original quality isn't all that hot. At first glance you think WTF they look more pixelated than the OCP captures, but then you realise that the analogue capture process used has effectively blurred and softened the original footage. You would seriously need to run this footage through some filters but there *is* more detail there to work with than the OCP captures, and it is easier to ramp it to the desired framerate as you are at least starting off with the original progressive frames.

I'll get over to a house with broadband and up as much as I can tonight.

OK watch the a.b.sw skies...

Just do give you an idea of the general crappiness so no-one gets their hopes up too high, and what you might be able to do to clean them up - here is the grab from the OCP discs for reference

And here is the same frame from my direct rip of the BTM discs, then cleaned up using a quicky temporal algorithm

http://www.mudgee.net/ot/anchtemporal.png

and here is the raw (untouched) frame from my direct rip from the BTM discs.

http://www.mudgee.net/ot/anchraw.png

So as you can see the capture process used to get the images across for OCPs edit lost a lot of detail, but the process did soften the image considerably which hides the pixelation.

To make them usable I'd recommend doing a temporal cleanup on the static backgrounds, create a new extended clean plate and then roto the people back into the clean plates, then you would get something more like (should be better than) my quicky attempt in image #2.

I can't really spend any more time on this though, so I've supplied the raw materials and I throw it out to the rest of you gurus to finish off for whatever projects you have in mind.

Enjoy.

Wow that's great work right there Laserman. Any chance of a Megaupload?

If and when you do upload them, Laserman, I think you should just send out the raw data from the disc. Then we can all play with them as we see fit.

I see they are on a.b.starwars, that is the end of my journey, others can take the wheel from here.

Johnboy, Laserman appears to be uploading the untouched rips to a.b.starwars. This is essentially what you're asking. Fear not, as somebody will no doubt download these and endeavour to clean them up.

Laserman's idea of creating a clean background plate is a good idea. Effects gurus? Adywan? DE? Others?

I'm not going to be doing any processing johnnyboy, everything will be totally raw I assure you.

OK, I could use some help. Now bear with me, I'm a Mac guy... In Virtual PC (Win2k Pro), I've managed to open a command prompt window (no small accomplishment) and I guess run grisc.exe. I get this:

GrSmush converter Version 0.1 (hacky-hack version)
Usage: grisc snm-filename

I know, windows users everywhere are rolling thier eyes at me now. How and where do I enter the command in the nfo "grisc videofilename"??

Thanks

Hoo boy.

let's say your filename of the video was ANCHOR3.ZNM (which is one of them), you would copy that video into the folder that contains the grisc program and then you would open a command prompt.
You should get a nice black screen where you can type:

grisc ANCHOR3.ZNM

and that is all there is to it.

I'm a mac guy, but I spend a lot of time at the command line in OSX too

Can anyone with access to a.b.starwars see if these can somehow make their way to a torrent site, or Rapidshare? Please let me know through a PM if this is a remote possibility.

Well, it would have helped if I had actually opened the prompt from the correct directory! Figured that one out eventually. What can I say? CL's intimidate me . I am getting better, though. I do some things in OS X's Terminal (srm and such...)

Anyway. Got all the video files extracted and they're awesome. It's been a while since I've watched DM. I actually sort of like the pixelization! Thanks so much for everything you do to help us out Laserman! I'm really interested to see how someone could put some polish on these...

Yeah, I definitely much prefer the pixelated look/the semi-painted look from the filters vs. the blurred clarity look.

Umm, am I the only one who can't get the tools in those links to work? When I try to extract the files from the bundle, I get a "stream-read error" message. Any ideas?

EDIT: Never mind. I got it. But I can't find the cut scenes? Where in the bundle are they?
