How many times have you bought the movies? — Page 2

I'm smug in the knowledge that I've probably given GL less money than any of you.

Through the eighties, I had SW, ESB and ROTJ on VHS recorded off the TV.

In 1995, I bought the widescreen THX VHS set new.

I also own TPM Region 2 DVD, bought new, and AOTC which was given to me as a present.

My laserdiscs are all off ebay; the French PAL LDs (SW x 2, ESB & ROTJ) and the US "special widescreen edition" of SW.

I bought the 2006 PAL GOUT DVDs, but shopped around on the internet to get the lowest possible price. My copies, from CD WOW I think, have the Australian covers!

Another member of the forum actually gave me the Region 1 NTSC GOUT SW as he had a spare! And I illegally downloaded DVD5 versions of the NTSC ESB and ROTJ, so bite me.

Oh, and I forgot, I also own TPM VHS, which I got as a gift and AotC VHS and RotS DVD, both of which I bough from a video rental sell out for like 1€. And most of my SW VHS are 2nd hand.

I think I personally have only brought the Star Was trilogy once at retail, twice off ebay, the rest of my collection were presents from family.

1994 CBS FOX THX Fullscreen VHS tapes - present for birthday from parents
1997 Gold Fullscreen SE VHS boxset - present from parents
2004 Silver DVD boxset - Christmas present from uncle
2006 GOUT DVDs - I brought these from play.com
1997 Silver Widescreen SE VHS boxset - I brough these from ebay
1997 SE LaserDiscs - I brought these from ebay.

Before it officially came out on VHS I did have ANH taped on Betamax (with all the adverts lovingly paused out...my first video editing was Star Wars see) from it's first showing on ITV (some part of my brain still expects the break cards to turn up in key moments). I decorated the box with cut up Star Wars figure backing cards and sticky tape.

When we got rid of the Betamax player and saw the posters for Star Wars coming out on rental I saved for ages to get a copy (I think it was about fourty quid) because I couldn't wait that long for the next showing to tape.

I also had Raiders on Betamax (the first official tape I had because it was rather cheap when it first came out) but when we moved over to VHS the bloke from Redifussion (the same guy who traumatised me by showing me the more gory bits of Dawn Of The Dead in the shop) copied it over onto VHS for me but I kept it in the Beta box.

Happy days.

But... the Beta box would have been too small...  Or was it one of those with the cardboard elbow at the top to keep the Beta from sliding all of the way down the box?  Or was it a "clam shell" that was compatible with both formats.

Happy days.

While Happy Days shares a co-interdependence with Lucas's American Graffiti... buying it on DVD does nothing for Lucas and is off topic to this thread.  Thankyouverymuch.

After the 2004 DVDs, I swore off Star Wars. I bought the CN Clone Wars stuff and my mom got me the PT, but after that I said I was done and I am. Didn't get the GOUT, won't get the BR, won't get KOTCS, won't get anything. Not anymore. I'm done.

I'm a close second to Moth3r on least spent through the years.

Purchased new when they were released. Made my first full-film audio rips from these.  Eventually lost them in a flood in the early 90s, along with nearly everything I'd ever owned.

Purchased used about a year after it was released. Offered it to Bkev for free a few years ago.  He ignored my PM, so I donated it to the store front of a shelter for abused women, where they sell items to raise money. I take stuff there regularly.

Purchased used in 2004.  Looking around the internet to get it transferred to DVD eventually led me to this site.  Still have it.

Purchased new in 2006.  Got home with it, opened the package in the driveway, removed this disc, and threw everything else in the trash can.  Only the disc went inside the house, to be stored in a generic single-disc case.

Anyway, that's it.  If there is ever a proper release of the 1977 theatrical version of Star Wars, I'll buy it. However, since the NPR version has long since replaced the film for me, I'm not really concerned.  I haven't watched the film in four years.

Awesome that you offered the originals to a youngster who probably hadn't seen them. I wish I still had mine... (I really wish my dad had found the tapes I grew up with)

Such a great story. I love that you take everything to the extreme, and I don't doubt a word of it.

That was the fella (it had a teaser trailer for Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom and banner promoting the fact that the prequel was in production along the bottom of the front cover).

The teaser had no footage from the film just a Indy style map showing the locations it was being shot in and "Trust Me" pulled from Raiders.

Oh look...here it is!

In chronological order:

-STAR WARS soundtrack LP was a gift (Christmas '77 ?)

-pan/scan "faces" VHS box was a Christmas gift that year

-GOUT trilogy retail from Circuit City

-Empire of Dreams '04 bonus disc from a brick&mortar secondhand shop

-JSC, DC, & various individual laserdiscs from online auctions

However, in practice you must take into account the “fuckwit factor”. Just talk to Darth Mallwalker…

Here are all the times the movies got purchased because of me:

-got the '95 full screen vhs of ANH for Christmas that year

-got the '97 widescreen trilogy for Christmas that year

-got the TPM full screen vhs for Easter, 2000

-got the TPM dvd at Sam Goody not long after it came out in October, 2001

-got the AOTC widescreen dvd at Circuit City (they were price-matching a killer price-undercut from Toys R' Us) not long after it came out in November, 2002

-My mom picked up the '04 widescreen set at costco when I was back from school several weeks after it came out.

-Not long before ROTS hit theaters, I found an '86 (original) full screen vhs of Jedi. Shortly thereafter I completed the '95 collection with used copies of Empire and Jedi, but Empire had static every several seconds. A couple years later, I would find a '95 boxset and throw out my earlier '95 individuals. I'd still kinda like to get original vhs copies of ANH and Empire, just so Jedi isn't all by itself. :)

-got the ROTS widescreen dvd the day before it streeted (Halloween, I still remember)
