Hobbit - The Battle of Five Armies — Page 3

I liked Battle of Five Armies. It's exactly what I expected it to be.

That said, I can't wait to watch the inevitable fan-edit that condenses all three films into 1 epic; removing as many Jacksoninsms as possible to try and stay faithful to the book.

Who is "Tolkein"? and who are these "Tolkein fans" of which you speak?

Chanced upon a nice Martin Freeman gif...

Fans of the works of JRR Tolkein; I'm betting Peter Jackson never actually read more than a few pages of any of his books. Maybe there was some bully growing up who was into Middle-Earth too much.

I still don't understand... so Tolkein was an author? What books did he write?

Author

Yeah, I agree, PJ's probably never read anything from this Tolkein.

Could be.  The original lord of the rings trilogy of movies (not the snoozefest extended editions) are magical films, but they disagree with the books in several key factors.  The one that bothers me the most is in Return of the King when Frodo kicks Sam off the journey while climbing the mountain.  It's out of character and it did not happen in the book, unless I just blacked out while reading the book.

There's at least two people missing the joke...

I think Tolkein wrote a book called Here and There Again...or something. Don't quote me on that.

The EEs will certainly be the films off which to base a fan-edit.

But what about the new additions to the Dol Guldur scenes in DOS? Doesn't the EE have different versions of a few shots, or am I making that up?

Yeah, there are differences.

However, and this not something which would apply to all fan-edits, I was thinking of a fan-edit that didn't really *have* that sequence.

Not true, I just decided to go ahead and make a point when harmy replied to my first comment with a serious point.  My first comment wasn't intended to go that way.

Harmy did not reply with a serious point.

I've just googled 'Tolkein'. Turns out there's a J.R.R. Tolkein on tumbler and facebook, and a Tolkein appreciation society. I'm no closer to finding out who this Tolkein is, but there's already a society with which to appreciate him. Awesome stuff.

Umm...did I misspell JRR Tolkien's name or something?

Otherwise I don't think Peter Jackson ever read the Hobbit in the first place.

I don't think anyone has actually read the Hobbit. Archaeologists say it was lost long ago. Jackson's movies are probably the closest we'll ever get to knowing the true story, so I'm not sure why so many people are annoyed by it.

Why does everyone keep acting like the movies are works of fiction?  They are documentaries.

Oh damn, I see now.  Well I understood the original joke, but missed harmy's then.  Shame on me.

Well, it's not like there aren't other adaptations out there. ;)

All of them are probably a hundred times more faithful than Jackson's cash-grab sodomy, designed to piss off all Tolkein fans. No one can like the book and the movies at the same time.

I haven't seen the this film (The Battle of Five Armies) yet, but I'm a big fan of the The Hobbit as well as the two Peter Jackson films of it that I've seen so far.

And I like The Hobbit much more than any of the three LotR books.

So what now? Am I not a "true fan" of Tolk(ei|ie)n? Good.

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

Well, given that you prefer Jackson's versions to Tolkien's....

Ah, I didn't word that clearly enough. Here's a better expression of my preferences:

([The Hobbit book] ≈ [The Hobbit movies]) > [LotR movies] >> [LotR books]
