Info Wanted: an Original Trilogy preservation project with French audio?

 (Edited)

For many years now I’ve been looking for the Original trilogy with the original french audio track. I would like to know if anyone ever did a preservation edit (which doesn’t seem to be listed in this forum) or if anyone could be able to do it. Like almost everyone on this forum, it really is the idea of viewing the movies that I grew up with in my mother tongue that drove me here.

I read somewhere in the threads (can’t find the exact place) that a few people had the soundtrack in french on a Laserdisc version they own. This forum seems to be my only hope…

So, if anyone could help me in this matter it would be very appreciated.

Oh, and if someone ever needs help in doing french subs, I’d be more than willing to help.

Thanks.

Not quite. The french dub is quite good...
Like in the Leone movies and some others, I enjoy the two audio versions.

The translation is a bit loose in the first film, but gets more faithfull in the next two.
And here it's a classic: "Met la gomme Chico !"*
It's even sampled by the french rap scene**...

So while it definitely shouldn't be a high priority preservation task,
I'm sure quite a few French speaking people would dig to have a french OT.
(And their kids as well...)

* : Chiquetaba/Chico = Chewbacca/Chewie (in the first film only).
** : like the great Wu Tang Clan did with some excellent Shaw Bros. movies

I think that the PAL transfers of the OT that Moth3r is responsible for are from a French LD set, if you check out that thread you may be able to find out more. I think Moth3r has stated that maybe one day he'll rip the french sound from the LDs so that people could use it as an alternate audio track.

Haha! I forgot that one!

I was kidding when I said "La honte". Personally I'm a purist who needs to watch films in V.O. but other people have different tates...DUH!

You're right though, the first film is really loose. Not only that, but "Dark Vader" sounds like he's speaking through a cardboard tube!

Like you, I always watch movies in VO. Star Wars is the exception, simply because I saw it long before I could understand English. When I opened this post, I was actually hoping that not only French-speaking people would be interested in this request, but also other fans who first saw these movies in Spanish, Italian et caetara and for whom having the OT in their mother tongue would also be very nice.

Sinon, je sais que Moth3r a fait ses versions avec les Laserdiscs français...demande-lui.

Merci, je le contacterai.

As for the translation, that's what's so great about the French dub: the "Mets la gomme Chico", the "Millénium Condor" are quite typical of the old school French tranlations.

One of the comments here says:
The sound of this LD is Stereo and not Dolby Surround because the original 1977 French mix for the movie was only a two-track Stereo mix, due to limitations of French theaters at the time.
Is that true?

It would be fairly quick for me to sample the French soundtrack and post it as an AC3 file for people who want to patch the DVD themselves, like I did with the mono mix. But there will be a little gap in it where the dodgy side change occurs.

However, I'm going to get on with ROTJ first, as that's what most people are waiting for (and if I'm not careful, Citizen will have done it in five different formats before I've even done one )

I was thinking about re-authoring my trilogy when it's finished, just the PAL single layer versions, removing my upmixed 5.1 448kbps track and replacing it with the French 2.0 at 224kbps & German 2.0 audio at 224kbps, the menus/title text/intro scrolling text/alien subtitles would still be in English but it would have 3 different language tracks and the video wouldn't have to be re-encoded to accomodate the new audio tracks.
I haven't checked but I get the feeling that the French & German audio have had pitch correction applied to them which would make the music/sound effects on the English track sound a bit higher in pitch because it comes from the Definitive Collection and hasn't had pitch correction applied.

"La honte" ??!?

-> Honestly, I don't think so... When somebody has grew up with the French version (as me), the french dialogues are always good memories. For myself, I find the english version better, of course, but the french version will always have place in my heart...
BTW, when I re-re-re-re-re-re....re-re-re-watch Star Wars movies, I watch 'em sometimes in english, sometimes in french

Great, so far we have two options, thanks to Moth3r and Citizen.

Option 1 : Moth3r

It would be fairly quick for me to sample the French soundtrack and post it as an AC3 file for people who want to patch the DVD themselves, like I did with the mono mix. But there will be a little gap in it where the dodgy side change occurs.

How long is the gap? Is there a way to avoid or to correct it?

Option 2 : Citizen

[...] and replacing it with the French 2.0 at 224kbps & German 2.0 audio at 224kbps, the menus/title text/intro scrolling text/alien subtitles would still be in English but it would have 3 different language tracks and the video wouldn't have to be re-encoded to accomodate the new audio tracks.

That's great. Would it be possible to find somewhere an intro scrolling text in French for the beginning?

I'm sure such releases would be a hit among fans. I also grew up with the French translation, so it has a very nostalgic value to me. After all, nostalgia is driving most of this!
