The 5.1 tracks on the DVDs are good, but they still nag at me on every viewing. I’d love  to hear the original theatrical Dolby surround audio.

Is this on the laserdiscs?

The thx tapes are stereo, not sure if they are the theatrical just thx certified.

Raiders and Doom were released in pan and scan CAV full feature format on laserdisc, last crusade was clv. Not sure if the clv releases of raiders and doom are time compressed.  The ones i own are the clv letterbox releases.

From what i have heard the dvd 5.1 is derived from the 70mm mixes of the trilogy, the 35mm were not used on the dvd.

Some of the foreign dvd releases have those countries own 2.0 from what i remember but none of them have the english 2.0.

But Lucas botched dvd versions of graffiti and thx were also missing their monaural mix.  pretty bad for thx considering it was the brilliant sound design of walter murch.

Because of Lucas i will never be able to retire my Laserdisc player.  The idiocy of these not being on dvd in their real original versions is just simply astounding, as to the original star wars being non anamorphic and crap quality.  The original THX also exists as a non anamorphic video master on laserdisc, did not even get the bastardized treatment of a gout.

... The 5.1 track on the Raiders DVD was derived from the original 6 track mix. Nothing was added or taken away. The mix was done at Paramount and not Lucasfilm. Had Lucasfilm been involved, I'm sure new elements would have creeped in, but as it is, the DVD IS the original mix. And the original Dolby Stereo track was derived as well from the 6 track master. This isn't a case like Star Wars where multiple mixes were made.

The digital PCM track on the widescreen laser disc is wrong! It has at least one sound effect that is different from the original film and the analog sound on the original LD is pretty fuzzy sounding. Neither are worth preserving.

That sounds right. I guess I was just to used to tinny VHS audio. It's nice that an original mix was used to make a new 5.1 track. I'm so tired of audio being redone by someone not affiliated with the original design.

Does this also go for Temple and Last Crusade??

Are any of the LDs worth tracking down for 35mm mixes?

Wonder what will be on the Blu-ray for audio?  I really hope they don't change anything and release the films with lossless transfers of the six tracks. But with the CGI change to Raiders I highly doubt we will get original audio again.

Sorry to bring up an old thread but I'm pretty sure that the music at the Wrath of God scene was pretty much altered on the DVDs and the Blu-rays. Did anyone else notice this?

Is there a thread or link that talks about the differences between the 70mm and 35 mm audio mixes?  I've never heard that there were any.

I've seen the film in 35 mm a few times and had the widescreen laserdisc release and DVD.  Nothing was readily apparent, maybe I wasn't listening closely enough.

Yeah, I've always noticed the score in this scene was butchered for the DVD since the first time I've played it. Can't remember how the cue was edited originally though (I don't have the VHS any more).

I preserved the Raiders and Temple laserdisc tracks and synced them to the BD. When I gave a copy to thegriff he noticed two minor things:

Quote: "Temple does have a few changes that thegriff noticed. When Indy leaves the spike trap the chanting/music builds up; unlike the DVD/BD that has the music jump right in. Also when Willie asks what's wrong with you to Indy, she stutters on the LD soundtrack but not in the DVD/BD. I thought that was an error on my part but I went back to original copy of the widescreen LD it was there. I then went to the the pan and scan LD and it is there also. Nothing special but still interesting."

The 1999 VHS was remixed I think. It had a lot more 'whizzing' noises in the gun battle scenes and also the sound of Indy dropping the staff into the map room is a different sound. The 2003 mix is similar to what was used on past VHS and Laserdisc (I assume) releases. The BluRay I believe used elements of an original mono mix which also has the 'whizzing' noises from the 1999 mix. I actually prefer the 2003 mix personally but thats just me.
