Hi!!

Just wondering if anyone out there has a reasonable quality copy of the original ITV airing if Star Wars? Think it was in '83? After a DVD-r transfer if possible, or I can transfer it to this medium if someone would be good enough to lend me their tape. Would preferebly like it with the adverts intact but any copies welcomed.

Please e-mail (taking out gaps) p l a y m i s t y f o r m e @tiscali.co.uk

Thanks!

I **THINK** it was the mono soundtrack, though doubtless I'll be corrected here ;-

It's just nostalgia frankly - would love to have this just to bring back those memories of 1983. We must have been one of the last people on the planet to get a VCR, so it was a huge big deal when Star Wars was on for the first time. These days it's too easy to watch a film, hence I think some people tak them for granted - there's no anticipation anymore. But that's a subject for another thread I guess...

If it is the first 1983 airing you've got I'd be willing to pay you for any postage costs etc etc.

Cheers,

I have a tape of this, don't know what year it was recorded (I think ITV showed Star Wars several times in the eighties) but I thought it was around 1982. It does not include adverts, and the beginning and end are missing.

The value of this tape is in the soundtrack, which is the rare mono mix. I captured it and synced it up to my laserdisc transfer. See:

Personally I don't see the attraction in VHS-quality pan and scan when you can have laserdisc quality widescreen, so I didn't capture the video. (Perhaps I'm not as "nostalgic" as you lot!) I do know however that Russ made a DVD out of one of these ITV recordings with his DVD recorder.

bigrob, if you could find your tape, I know someone who'd be very interested to know how the audio compares with mine (specifically: dynamic range, signal/noise ratio and how much, if any, is missing).

I have to agree with Moth3r that his recording of the mono soundtrack from the 80's ITV broadcast synched and added to the Moth3r ANH is the best way (so far) of watching ANH with the mono soundtrack.

The video is definately a different Pan and Scan cut to the other retail versions released at around the same time in the US and UK. A single screenshot comparison is shown here.

The mono differences are shown here.

Here is a post I did a few months ago.............

I have just made a discovery that emphasises that this is not just another transfer like all the rest.

Firstly, it has the mono soundtrack with the C3P0 tractor beam line, close the blast doors etc

Secondly, I believe this to be a totally different "cut" of the film to the one released on VHS and Laserdisc.

The shot that shows this is Luke's macrobinocular POV shot of the Banthas with the Tusken Raider walking to the side of the frame.

The "Full length" NTSC version shows the view in the middle of the macrobinoculars with no Tusken Raider.

The early "Time Compressed" NTSC version and PAL version shows the macrobinocular squeezed into the frame and the Tusken Raider.

This ITV broadcast shows a completely different view..............
