Has there ever been a good comedy sequel? — Page 3

Yeah, I can't even make it one day without being forced to watch Kevin Smith fans reenact his films.
Oh, wait... Never mind. That's never happened to anybody...

I know what ya mean though. Like you said, everybody has some film/tv series, musical artist, ect. that they wish would stop doing what they do.
But I usually find it easy to just ignore things I'm not a fan of.

Why?

Have you seen his recent movies?

That and he comes off as a jerk who is completely full of himself.

I've enjoyed most of Smith's films, and would even call "Dogma" a truly GREAT film.

But when a dude made almost as many films about himself and how cool he is as he has made actual movies its hard to like him.

I think artists who complain about critics as much as Smith does shows a character flaw, and I thought it was classless the way he threw Bruce Willis under the bus for the mediocre 'Cop Out."

I also would say the way Smith doesn't finish the (IMHO lousy) comic books he writes shows a contempt for the medium he claims to respect. He's handed the keys to the castle to write "Batman" and takes a pee on the door and leaves.

Yeah now my only run in with critics has only been in the form of fan fiction but still not all reviews or PMs I have gotten have been polite, positive, or even nice but I just let those roll off of my back.  I also still try to understand the negative reviews and some of them have been a big help in making me a better writer so I don't see anything wrong with negative reviews and even find them helpful in some cases.  Also I don't hate all of Kevin Smith's films(I kind of like Jay and Silent bob strike back and from what I can tell a lot of people hate that one)so it's not that I am looking for a reason to hate the guy and I really liked Clerks the animated series.  It's just I guess it always strikes me as bad form when someone who is paid millions of dollars to produce something that people have to pay money to see responses negatively to critics.

Even if you don't agree with the critics, you put out art in public and one of the big points of producing art is to give people something to talk about IMO, so I don't see why when you are being paid more for one project then most people make in a life time you can't just let what the critics say roll off your back.  Even if they are rude why not be the bigger man.  If you complain too loudly it sounds like you think you are entitled to people's money and you think they should just shut up and pay to see what you made and that they don't have the right to say afterwords if they thought it was good or not.

If debating the merits of a piece of art is out of line then what is the point of art, if all we can do is pay to see it and then talk about how great it was?  Wouldn't that get dull after a while?

As for his fans maybe it is just something I have been through but my brother and his friends are big Kevin Smith fans so it seems like I can't go two days hearing about him, but that may just be me.

Still I think Hollywood over exposes even the movies I like these days, half the time with all the advanced trailers and marketing that start before the movie even starts shooting I am sick of a new film before it even hits theaters, I think maybe Hollywood would see a better return for their money if they took a less is more approach to marketing.

I find it grating with movies I like so when it comes to movies I don't it really gets on my nerves.

But again maybe this is just my problem and a problem with Hollywood in general and I shouldn't be taking it out on Kevin Smith.

Trailers, more often than not, will make make me hate a movie before I even see it. It's kind of a mistake to trust a trailer. Some trailers are better than the movie. Then you have great movies with a certain tone, and the trailer is the complete opposite. Guardians of the Galaxy looked like a crapfest in the trailer, and I was shocked at how much I liked the movie.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

That's for truth... I thought it looked so stupid in the trailers but when I saw the movie I was blown away.

The second Hangover is as terrible as everyone says, but the third is actually pretty great. One of the most unfairly maligned movies of the decade.

I wouldn't call it great by any means, but much better than Part II and very refreshing.

He may have in an alternate timeline, but I'll leave the investigations of that up to you.

That's the best part about it; nobody's quite been able to figure it out.  We know he's not the original film, since he makes cryptic references to things that must have come before, but it is now suspected that he's a sequel to a movie that has been lost, and not adequately preserved.

Some have conjectured it might be Star Wars, actually . . .

Sorry, what I stated regarding Ghostbusters and the sequel is verifiable fact.

I've looked into your theories and have done a large amount of research myself and It all checks out-
Ghostbusters 2  was a disappointing piece of crap in 1989 and it smells even worse now.
This has gone too far without the definitive proofs of GB2's badness:

We Hate Movies' revelations

My friend went to a Q&A with Paul Feig the other day, he said his Ghostbusters is a reboot because Sony tried to get him to do a sequel for about a year, but all the scripts were about the GBs having fallen on hard times, which he thought was stupid since they'd be heroes. Which means that Paul Feig understands more than the original writers did when they wrote Ghostbusters 2 a handful of years after the original.
