Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets - The Enhanced ABC Cut (Released) — Page 2

Seems like your cut might be rendered moot by the upcoming official extended DVD, which is ... you guessed it ... 13 minutes longer than the theatrical cut.

I had the parts on my computer already when they announced the new DVD.  That's the only reason I finished it at this point.

They've been really strange about the extended cut.  They waited a really long time to release it on DVD even though it's been on TV a billion times over the past several years.

The worst thing is there are some real flaws. A lot of what I changed was nit picky such as musical cues and formatting of shots, but some fixes are for legitimately sloppy editing.

Untimed colors in a scene, dubbing that doesn't sync, and shifting black borders are just a few of the problems.  Probably the worst is an overdub added to the theatrical cut to account for a deleted scene that wasn't removed by ABC.  It's contradictory to what they added back.

(Hermione tells Ron and Harry to put Crabbe and Goyle in a closet and take their robes.  In the deleted scene, after Ron and Harry have put them in the closet they arrive at the bathroom and Hermione gives them robes she got from the school's laundry.)

I find it impossible to believe they might commercially release a cut in that condition, but based on run time alone it sounds like they aren't going to bother to expand on the plotlines for the restored scenes: why the Kwikspell letter is embarrassing,  the crowing of a Rooster can kill a basilisk (and the dead roosters Hagrid is carrying around), Hermione having a crush on Lockhart, and Ron's father's second raid on the Malfoy house based on information from the polyjuice potion episode.

I can't see releasing this on DVD until we see what the official release really turns out to be, but I would consider an XviD if there is interest.

I wasn't trying to rain on your parade or anything, I only just learned about the extended cuts (and I still can't find out if the first film's EE will be released in Canada as Philosopher's Stone or not, as I'm waiting for that to dive into Blu-Ray HP) on DVD and thought of this thread.

I myself would be quite interested in an XviD of this - I think some of the deleted scenes could really add to the film (though I've never actually seen any EE of any HP film).

For Philosopher's Stone, you might want to take a look at ADigitalMan's edit.  He originally did Socerer's Stone by later released an extended Philosopher's Stone.

I don't know how many differences there are between that version and the ABC cut.  I think one small scene was slightly out of place, but you wouldn't know it.  I don't think ABC had anything additional, but I haven't done a 1:1 comparison.  Maybe someone else has.

I have his Philosopher's Stone edit, I just haven't watched it yet.

Is it confirmed that the UE DVDs will simply be the ABC cuts, or is it possible that they've had some additional fine-tuning (however small) done to them?

AFAIK, the only info released is how many minutes of additional footage will be on each.

I think the official extended dvd's are an afterthought much like the dvd versions of the remastered star treks 1-10 were, they announced the blu ray first and i was wondering if it would be blu ray exclusive.  But clearly there are so many people still with dvd they would lose money.  Doing this they can tap both markets and make more money.

Looks really good--I like everything you did. The cut at 0:18 is a bit jumpy, but I don't think you would notice it if you were just watching the movie.

@Kukuruza: Neat trick... I haven't released it anywhere.

It's just a comment copied from post #6 of this thread.

I'm starting to get suspicious about this account - it has the hallmarks of a Russian spambot, but hasn't actually tried promoting anything (yet).

Based on some of the other posts, I thought maybe it was a Fortune Cookie Message Generator gone bad.  For instance:

So why hasn't the account just been closed bu the admins?

Because it's possible that it is a legit account made by some who just struggles with the English language. That is not a bannable offence.

I always cut and paste what other people say when I don't speak the language. ;)

I think it's something trying to simulate activity on an account... for whatever reason.

Rather than start a new thread, I'll ask here.

The Digital Bits has had the opportunity to review the new Ultimate Harry Potter BDs and refer to the extended cuts as 'never before seen'.  The do not, however, give futher details.

Does anyone have further intel on the new cuts or are they the same old extended cuts?

If you are able to read german (or get it translated for yourself) here is a so called "Schnittbericht", a comparison between the two Versions in the Ultimated Edition Box.

Thanks. I don't speak a word of German, but from the screenies you linked I'd say the ABC cut is EXACTLY what the new extended version is.

So much for 'never before seen'.

It also probably means the same editing flaws are still present.

I'll see about encoding an XviD of my edit for those that want to see if they are interested in a full DVD release.

Thanks, that link confirms that it is exactly the ABC cut.  They even noted instances of fading to black and back in where ABC had but commercial breaks.

So the extended cut is the ABC edit, warts and all, making ADM's (and my edit here) a better alternative.

No Peeves scenes, nothing new, same continuity errors.  Extended Cut Fail.

It'd be wonderful to have your extended cuts in 1080p - I was planning on getting the UE Blu-Rays of all the films (skipping out on the regular editions) to get the extended cuts in high-def, and if I had high-quality 1080p MKVs of your extended cuts I'd be set on that and can just get the regular Blu-Rays of the theatrical cuts.

Just a suggestion.  ;-)

The problem with that is the ABC broadcast was 720p.  I would need to get a hold of the BD's (or recoded source since I don't have a BD drive) of the Theatrical and Extended cuts and then reconstruct the edit.

Also, since AFAIK there is still no NLE for HD content all cuts would have to be done in avisynth.  That was how I started and I was juggling a half dozen nested scripts with loads of trim+trim+trim...etc.

When Womble goes HD, I'll consider it. ;)

I just bought the Ultimate Box Sets of both(1&2) and have a Blu-ray drive and can rip,but have no way to share the files,to big.

my little boy and I are going to start a HP marathon today, looks like his School will be closing due to WAY TO MUCH DAMN SNOW,so that is why I got in my big 4x4 and went to the store early this morning, nothing is open yet so I can't comment on quality yet or anything else, but I can soon.

"So the extended cut is the ABC edit, warts and all, making ADM's (and my edit here) a better alternative."

Not sure I agree with this statement though, your edits are NOT Blu-ray quality by a long shot, and how do you know the quality exactly without actually watching them for your self? they just came out, more to come later.

Final Cut, Premiere Pro, Avid, and Vegas all do HD.

Sometime down the road (read: when I have a shit-ton more money and time), when I have a Blu-Ray drive, I'll probably try to do this, if only because I'd really like these in the highest quality I possibly can.

I'd also need to figure out how to edit in 5.1, and how to keep the 5.1 lossless/uncompressed throughout, since releasing an edit in 1080p BD-25 while including nothing but 2.0 audio seems like a wasted opportunity.
