Hi. Is there a download link for the Despecialized versions? I’m interested in those in great quality if available.

Thanks.

As per Internet protocol: read first post of this thread. Then Google if answer is not fully satisfied. Don’t just jump in asking for a link.

I came here to post the same thing and say congratulations Harmy. I got a bit of a shock when reading the morning news and came across the link/article. That’s pretty big exposure here in Australia, I guess the journalist is a fan and contacted you for an interview?

Before I even clicked on the artlcie I knew it was about the despecialized editions and Harmy.

edit: do you care to elaborate on your job and change of profession? Congratulations on that too by the way. Someone was bound to snap you up given your ‘work experience’.

Wife and I watched SW v2.5 last night. She was amazed at the quality of the video. 😃

I keep thinking to myself that the more this gains notoriety the more inevitable a commercial release of the Theatrical OT probably is.

I’m reminded of some years ago (mid-00’s) The Beatles American albums had never been released on CD and Capitol records reluctantly put out two box sets, in limited release, of the original American versions. This was supposedly done to stem the tide of the lucrative underground market for people that wanted THOSE versions they grew up with.

Then in 2014, after many years of never completing the previous project Capitol/EMI did a full on deluxe roll out of the American albums; of course 2014 was the 50th Anniversary of The Beatles first playing on Ed Sullivan, etc.

Once Disney finally gets the mindset that this is basically ‘found money’, it will happen. Quite frankly, I’m fairly certain just given the lengths Disney goes to to please fans that this is a fait accompli. Perhaps the only thing left to decide is a release date. Mid 2016 to tie in with the Blu-ray of The Force Awakens? Or Christmas 2016 when Rogue One is in cinemas? Or May 2017 for the 40th Anniversary?

It’s when, not if at this point.

I just hope they are smart enough to use Mike Verta’s work on Legacy when this happens.

I’m betting Disney will commission our friend from Hollywood with the multiple prints and release only Star Wars for its 40th anniversary in May 2017. Maybe they’ll even pay him to do the soap opera and the puppet show too!

I said that in 1997. When sometimes takes longer than you’d think.

I still think the GOUT was released because of the laserdisc transfers that were being shared here, so this will hopefully be the next step - and I think they would be really stupid not to use Mike’s version for Star Wars - there’s a meticulous, well-researched 4K restoration, with stunning image quality that they can have for free - maybe they could give Mike some percentage from sales, because he f*cking deserves it and it would make them look good and then they could include Mike’s making-off with it and make it like a thing.

Also, most of the comparisons in that article are either sourced from 35mm in the DeEd, or they only have small, pretty seamlessly blended SD elements, so it doesn’t only show off Despecialized but it actually shows SE vs. original, where both are true HD quality. Even so, I still get comments saying “What’s this about? The original is out on DVD just the way it looked like before they remastered it for SE”.

It would be so awesome if they used Mike’s version and then paid him to do ESB and ROTJ.

He’s said that it’s virtually the only way to see a restored version of the trilogy. The negatives don’t exist in any viable form today, so Legacy would be their first option to use.

I think, if the 2004 version is actually sourced from the negatives, they could still be used for a restoration but it would be expensive and it’s questionable whether it would even be better than Legacy - maybe if they scanned what’s left of the negative and gave it to Mike to use as one of his assets, it could really improve the detail in Legacy.

Yeah the YouTube commentators aren’t really the most well-informed bunch. But in the next behind-the-scenes video you do, maybe you could address some of these uninformed comments. On the one hand, it’s frustrating to read those comments stated with such certainty. But on the other hand, it’s good to inform the lay people so that they’re not led astray.

I’ve already made a video explaining this, if they didn’t watch that, they won’t watch a new one.

Which is the other rather brilliant reason the GOUT was probably released: to completely sabotage the reputation of the OOT. There really are kids who seem to think the original state of Star Wars was a crappy ~240i video, until George selflessly rescued it in 1997 and brought it into the modern era of high quality picture and sound.

I’ve just heard from a guy who made one pretty well known Star Wars fanfilm and wrote for Clone Wars and he says he just watched Despecialized with a bunch of writers from Rebels 😃

That’s really awesome, Harmy! It’s crazy to see how mainstream this project has become and how grateful people are to actually have the original trilogy in HD. Disney would have to be completely blind to not see what the public are craving.

Afaik, the materials for ESB and ROTJ are in much better shape than Star Wars so it wouldn’t need as arduous a restoration as Legacy.

Man, Harmy, I think I’m more nervous about all the publicity than you are. Or maybe I’m just more paranoid 😃
