Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released) — Page 157

Is it my imagination, or is the flickering in sync with the runtime counter in the corner?  I guess it would have to be since the counter changes every frame, but it got me wondering if there's some sort of auto-contrast or palette problem related to that overlay.

Yeah, I don't know where I'm gonna upload now, because RS went absolutely crap and limited the dl speed to 30Kbps for free users, in other words, it is impossible to dl anything from there unless you have a paid account. Uloz.to kind of sucks too and MU is dead.

frankly, the ideal thing might be to set up a private tracker. (even myspleen is IMHO too large an audience for an in-progress WP)

Oh, I was talking about the finished product. And how many times do I have to repeat that I absolutely cannot do torrents...?

Author
Time

Thought so, well even if there is extras I can just add to it.

I definitely wouldn't go for torrents either, especially since we can't download through them (or p2p in general) now in our country ever since the new law activated in September last year. :( But luckily file lockers were excluded. :)

The exact number of times until you hit a point when you sound like you've got the Dark Jedi Dickhead Flu, I'd guess. At that point no one has a pleasant experience. The number is yours to determine though.

I was just wondering would you be using rar, 7z or other for the final mkv? i'm not sure which would get the best compression for a large file like this but any savings are worth it i guess... does anyone know which is the best compression format?

There's very little point in using any file compression when the video is already compressed with h264. It's normal practice to split files into RAR archives using 'store' mode only.

Yes, the compression amount is negligible even with the strongest settings and then it only takes way longer to pack and unpack.

Harmy, I have a suggestion regarding colour and need to upload a couple of images from my harddrive. Could someone please tell me how to do that?

Author
Time

By the way, it's not to point out colour issues as such but rather a fix for clipped red channel highlights which is one of the biggest issues with this transfer.

...sorry, it was an honest mistake.

It would be great, if someone could post screenshots of all the shots where Vaders buttons are blue, ideally with PAL GOUT timecodes, I'm kind of losing track.

Harmy, I've uploaded my images to ImageShack but I'm unfamiliar with posting images in forums. Do I need to resize from 1280 x 1091 and if so how do I do that while linking to the original larger image?

Author

Yes, when you put the picture in the forum (by clicking the little tree image) you can specify resolution. Just set it to 720 horizontal and leave the vertical blank.

Images 1 and 3 are untouched Blu-ray grabs and 2 and 4 have been corrected to eliminate red channel clipping in the highlights visible in the red flare on Artoo's dome and the red light on the wall behind Threepio.

Harmy, I was just watching wp3r1 again today, and noticed that in a couple of shots, Tatooine's atmosphere looks a little too pronounced (compared to what I'm used to seeing, at any rate).  Should the blue strip of atmosphere be a bit darker?  Top image is from the work print, bottom has Tatooine darkened by 20%.

Overall, I'm loving the first two reels... excellent work.  I can't wait to see the next ones.

I agree about the halo. It was airbrushed onto the matte painting, but in the top image (which is based on the 1997 SE recomposite), the upper part of the "two-tone" effect is way too visible, making it look much more like a painting. I'm not faulting Harmy, of course - as I indicated before, the scene was digitally recomposited in '97, and the halo effect doesn't show up the same way it did in the original optical composite.

Here's a frame from -1's test capture of the flyover:

Obviously, the painting looks much more diffused, partly because of the generational loss and increased contrast that isn't in the recomp which came directly from the separate elements, but I'm guessing it's mostly because of how the painting exposed in the original composite. The halo glows more and (IMO) looks better than either Harmy's version or your retouching. (And actually, it also looks better to me than the GOUT version of the '77 flyover, which looks kind of drab and flat.)

I'm obviously not criticizing Harmy. Besides working from the '97 recomp, he doesn't have an IB reference for this scene because all of the British IB prints had the Episode IV crawl and recomposited flyover spliced in, on regular Eastman print stock, for the 1981 reissue. So not only is the flyover on the IB print not the original, it's also faded to a nice pink tinge as well.

Also, there's been some talk about how the starfield seems almost total black on the left side - this is true on all versions of the actual '77 flyover (including the GOUT). Besides the generational loss, the light level seems to drop off on the left side of the entire background layer (look at how the aforementioned atmospheric halo seems to fade out). If you look closely, the stars *are* there, but they're so dim that it just looks like a black void.

Look at Harmy's version - even with the stars so visible and luminant, you can see that the left side is still more sparsely populated than the other two thirds, and that a lot of the stars are little pinpoints. Both the multiple generations of duping and the odd light dropoff on the left made those stars virtually invisible by the time the scene got to the projection-print generation. It wasn't until the '77 flyover was recomposited for the SE that the stars on the left side became visible - in fact, they may be more visible on Harmy's version than on any official version.

(Does anybody know if the starfields were brighter on the '97 theatrical prints than on the '04/'11 transfer? For that matter, how do they look on the '97 video transfer?)

Harmy,I know you've been complimented a thousand times for your efforts at giving us Star Wars as I(45yo)remember it,but every time I see new pictures or new reels I"m just floored! Your versions are the ones I keep up with all my other movie collection cause yours are the best. One thing I find funny is how alot of the contributors to this forum are able to find this tiny, miniscule errors!...I will quote a line from a favorite movie of mine,"it's like looking for gnat shit outta pepper!"lol...or in other words I compliment thier ability to help you sometimes, but to me your work is gold. Can't Wait for the final release of this new version of Star Wars.

Not to offend here Snicker but i prefer Harmy's colors, that wall you are talking of seems to lose detail in your shots and C3PO looks to dull, i guess it all comes down to personal opinion, and since Harmy is basing his colors from a very decent source i think we must trust his judgement.

Also, Harmy, not to come across as a greedy twit, but have you received any reference shots for Reel 3 yet?  Can't wait to see what you've done to Mos Eisely!
