Greetings everyone,
For the past couple of weeks I have been acquiring materials like crazy in order to put together a special features DVD for the anime show Neon Genesis Evangelion. There are lots of details I could put up here, but I decided to wait and see if there is any interest on this forum before I do so. Mainly, it will comprise fan made music videos/parodies, official commercials/trailers, and interviews/documentaries with cast/crew. So please let me know if anyone is interested in the project.

I´m very interested about this. Especially if you include the making of evangelion that appeared in the bonus disc of the evangelion renewal box set in Japan.

would love to see this!

this is in my opinion one of the great animes of all time, if not the greatest.

The compression on the dvd's audio according to some sites though says are not As good as the re-issued laser disc box set or movie box set. If I had the equipment i would definetely do transfers of the lasers.

In fact there are a lot of anime laserdiscs that need preservation being as the dvd releases are inferior in most cases or changes have been made.

End of Eva with the original stereo would be nice. Manga felt that that wasn't as important as a 6.1 full remix. The stereo track provided was downmixed. I remember hearing Anno insisted that it be recorded in stereo when it was made. I think the Japanese renewal sported it as well as a remix.

You could put several discs together of just the video at "AMV.org".

Maybe a small collection of the better fanfics as well. I know of some great lesser known ones.

So I do have a copy of the bonus disc that came with Renewal, but it has no subtitles and I don't speak a word of Japanese. What I really need here is someone to potentially translate/subtitle the Genesis 0:0 programs on the disc for me. That way I could include it on the special features disc and not have it be completely useless to English-speaking-only fans. Is there anyone out there who would be able to do this, or knows where I can find a copy of it already translated?

Well unfortunaly there’s only an Italian fan sub available for download on the p2p although there probably there’s an English fan sub available on script club.

I’m very interested about this if could I only watch the Eva movies on 16:9 that aren’t available on the US DVD but only on the Japanese LD and DVD box sets. There so many incarnations of the Eva US DVD’s (Perfect collection, Platinum) but the lack of extras is demoralizing if we could get a Definitive box set so we could stop buying quadruple-dips on DVD.

So I really hope there enough interest in this not only because of the special features but because Neon Genesis Evangelion is arguably the best anime series ever and the End of Evangelion stand alongside Akira and the Miyasaki films as the most intriging anime movies ever made.

Believe me when I tell you that I would love to include all the Evangelion extras ever made on a single special features DVD. Unfortunately, with the plethora of stuff out there, it would be totally impossible. One particular fan told me that he currently has 12 gigabytes of extras. Clearly, if those were converted to a DVD format they would comprise a great many DVDs. My plan to is make a compilation of the best of the best stuff. Here's a rundown.

Part One: Music Videos (fan made)
-- faithless
-- engel
-- rei, beyond her heart
-- i can feel you
-- closer to god 2
-- evangelion opus
Part Two: Gainax Omake
-- extended opening
-- extended closing
-- opening sequence karaoke
-- subtitled version of the radio drama which takes place after EoE (its a comedy thing)
-- subtitled version of the alternate live action sequence meant for EoE
-- Evangelion 2 video game opening
-- both Genesis 0:0 documentaries (this is what i need the subtitles for)
Part Three: Ad Campaign
-- 15 second EoE commercial with crashing waves
-- 15 second EoE commercial with creepy giggling
-- fan made EoE trailer
-- U.S. evangelion tv series preview
-- 15 second Japanese evangelion series premiere commercial
-- 30 second Japanese evangelion series premiere commercial
-- Raising Shinji Ikari video game commercial
-- evangelion New Type commercial
Part Four: Parodies
-- amv hell 2: son of amv hell
-- eva bebop
-- eva mentos
-- gendo son of god
-- the life that is misato

As you can see, pretty much the entire Renewal Bonus Disc is included on my special features DVD, along with a bunch of other cool stuff. So even though this doesn't come close to the 12 gigs of extra stuff available out there, this should make a fine companion piece to anyone's Evangelion collection. I pretty much have everything I need for this DVD to happen, I just need those dang subtitles for the two Genesis 0:0 documentaries. If anyone is a member of scriptclub could you go ahead and check to see if they are available? I'd appreciate it.

While I am not a member, the search revealed that Scriptclub does have 'scripts' for Discs 1-7,9-10 of the R2 Renewal set. It's my guess that disc 10 is the disc of extras, right? So they most likely have what you need.

That really is a cool list I suggest that you should put the funny Ritsuko and Gendo (Geico) parody exchange from the end of the evangelion movie.

Wait, you have to have the Eva Black Knight Monty Python parody and the Phantom Menace Parody.

There's good in the Original Trilogy, and it's worth fighting for.

You're also missing the definative parody - Evangelion Redeath. I have a copy, along with a lot more AMVs. Shame I can't get redux. I also have This is Otakudom. It's primarily Fushigi Yugi, but Gendo plays a good role in it.

I have a copy of this as well, and was originally planning on including it. The quality, as you know, is quite poor and the Redux version would be a much better choice, but this version is not obtainable. Also, the creators, Studio Sudokai, for some unimaginable reason do not want their materials distributed via the internet. They only want it shown at anime conventions. Personally, I think this is a stupid ego-trip on their part, but I will respect their wishes and not include it on the dvd. Unless of course, someone can get the OK from them to use Redux and get a copy, that is.

UPDATE:

Bad news, people. I finally got approved at scriptclub and downloaded their Renewal subtitles. It looks as if the bonus materials were not included in that 10 disc set of translations/ So, unless anyone here speaks Japanese and is willing to translate, I guess I'll have to scrap the Genesis 0:0 documentaries. Any ideas?

The project has kind of stalled. The main problem is this lack of subtitles (of any kind) for the renewal bonus disc. I contacted Karyudo to see if he could help. He said he thought his Japanese wasn't good enough to do a decent translation so he is attempting to find someone who is more fluent to help translate.

Magnet, didn't you say something about an Italian subtitled version of the renewal bonus disc? If you have this I would kill for a copy of it. I think I might be able to manage an Italian to English translation.

UPDATE:

Hey everyone, sorry for the lack of updates lately but I had a hell of a last couple of weeks with my many med school exams, and then I got a well-deserved week off for spring break. Now I'm back to school and proud to report the progress of the special features DVD. Right now the project is about 90% completed.

The menu screens are finished and looking very nice. I forgot to tell one of the submenus to not return to the root menu after every file was played, but that is easily fixed. A few of the files that were supposed to be in widescreen were in fullscreen so I need to go back through and re-encode those. A couple also has some staticky audio, and I am unsure what to do about that. Does anyone have any suggestions?

There are roughly 2 hours of Evangelion goodness on this DVD, more than enough to satisfy Evangelion newbies and veterans. In fact, going through the first QC check I started to get a little tired of watching it since there is so much material on this disc! I will let you all know when I finish it. I can put up screen caps of the menus if anyone is interested. Also, I may be planning a bigger Evangelion project in the future so I will keep you apprised on that as well.

That´s very cool. I´m very interested in seeing those menu caps and out of curiosity did you ever found those pesky subtitiles for the evangelion documentaries.

Here are some screen shots of the menus on the DVD. Keep in mind that they will have music, and multiple pages, so not all the features are shown in the included screencaps. I went with static menus instead of full motion in order to squeeze more stuff onto this disc. Also, I chose this artwork because it looks "rougher" and not as polished, to go along with a theme of special features. I never did end up tracking down any subtitles for the Genesis 0:0 documentaries, so I guess I won't be including them. If I ever do find them someday, I will redo the DVD to include them.
