George Lucas on Oprah's OWN

Various clips from the show there.  Generally the interview is so cut up it lacks depth.  Plus Oprah ends most segments with, that's great stop right there we got it save yourself.

The interesting part is seeing George seem to be content with something outside his Star Wars life.  So playing arm chair psychologist, is there a correllation between the times George is in a relationship and the type of work he does.  Were the 'Linda Ronstadt' Years the same as Willow?  As these 'Mellody Hobson' Years have given rise to 'Red Tails'.  In these non-dating years, does GL conform to the Father role and it's just work work work... on Star Wars.

GL and LR in 84: http://www.ronstadt-linda.com/artpeo84.htm

Willow in 88: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096446/

ok maybe not.  as most of the projects shortly after 84 are Ewoks and Droids cartoons.

The other revelation is that George is a stalker.  George and Mellody retold their meeting story and it was George plane hoping with Mellody... You're going to NY, i'm going to NY, you're going to XYZ, i'm going to XYZ.  until she understood what was happening.  Cute in a rich creepy way.

This interview with the recent 'retirement' statements could be a sign that all his talk about person projects getting accomplished could be in his future.*  Who knows maybe GL will make an online venue like Funny or Die where his personal stuff will get the chance to go viral.

The end of the show interviews 'Red Tails' actors, Cuba Gooding Jr. and Terrence Howard.  Too short, as they spend camera time doing non-movie discussion.

* The problem with this idea is that the SW live tv show is going to eat up a big chunk of time.

Is it available anywhere to watch in the UK? Cant find the full show on the internet.

Wait, Oprah has a network named after herself?  I'm shocked.

Watched it now.

The part where George says he didn't "experience" Star Wars like everyone else going to the cinema knowing nothing about it, made me think that's gotta be one big reason why he doesn't understand the importance of preserving the originals.

He's spent so much time focusing on his "vision" that the experience itself has been ignored.

Yeah, I have just finished watching this and I thought the same thing.

George says that he is 'stubborn' and 'Obstinate'. Really ? I had no idea !

Probably, and yet it's pretty feeble and narcissistic considering all the other directors with major hits from the last 70 years. The ones who have grasped the radical concept of not telling supporters and preservationists to fuck off just fine.

I like it when she, his girlfriend, says that she's learned from him to simply let things go.

...

Really? From GWL? He taught you that? The guy who built a business empire, because he couldn't accept the changes made to his films?

...

Alright.

Did you make this sentence awkward on purpose?

You could have just said "I like it when his girlfriend says she's learned from him to simply let things go."

Alright.

More likely she learned to let go because it's Lucas' way or the highway.

no longer watch or read any of his 'interviews' (primarily cuz his lying is downright repulsive and all his 'interviews' are the same old crap he always spews). so im relying on what other people said - which admittedly may or may not be the appropriate thing to do.

so is he saying its hard for him to imagine why it electrified everyone in 1977 or that he never really was aware how much people loved it?  if its the latter - well, he's full of shit.  If its because he was down in the trenches the whole time trying to keep the film together (which I believe less and less as time goes by), then - what baronlando said.

i find it hilarious he thinks its cute to admit being 'stubborn' and 'obstinate' .  and likely so does his apologists.

being obstinate is a pretty serious character defect.  so is lying and selfishness and refusal to form normal functional relationships with other people.

oh well, its a start.  at least he didn't play the artist card like he did before.  he's admitting the way he carries himself has nothing to do with artistic integrity.  maybe one day he'll admit the whole PT enterprise was just a fraudelent cash grab that would put any 'hollywood suit' to shame.

And now I've got an image of Lucas in latex BDSM garb, straddling his gagged & hogtied girlfriend, screaming "Faster! More intense!" as he reaches climax, in my mind ...

Of course he didn't experience it like the rest of us, that's the way things work when you're the creator of such a behemoth. But anyone sane enough wouldn't try to fight against the people who admire your work, he mentioned it in the interview himself, "it became a cultural phenomenon" This asshole is on the board of directors for The Film Foundation, (how is that even possible) he knows very well what he's doing, I wonder if the other members do. It's impossible to like this person nowadays, he is so full of himself, it's ridiculous.

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

Sincerely, Lynne Hale publicity@lucasfilm.com

lucas being on the film foundation is no different your average pyramid scheme being a member of the Better Business Bureau.

but again, it is encouraging that, slowly but surely, he is exposing the fact that his actions have noting to do with artistic integrity and everything to do with his own personal selfishness and childishness.

there better not be any truth to that rumor he took the director responsibilities away from anthony hemingway on red tails.  would love to see apologists spin that.

all that nonsense over the years about him fighting 'the studios'.  the studios are the good guys in the OOT story as far as Im concerned.  they (along with a hall-of-fame cast and crew) fought a childish, lazy, excuse-making liar who flat out refused to put any kind of effort in making a quality movie.

lucas can try as hard as he wants to convince everyone that he's one of these guys in spirit:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0907657/

he isn't.  he never was.

Its no different than vince mcmahon "going against the 'no fun league' "  and creating a fraudulent POS football league.  unfortunately, football fans are much smarter than lucas apologists.

hopefully more cast and crew will speak out about the OOT.  not just saying they would release it if it was up to them - but saying lucas is wrong and selfish (not to mention hypocritical when it comes to ESB and ROTJ)

I don't think anyone will spill the beans about Red Tails or anything else while George is still alive.

None of the current bitching and gossiping that Star Trek cast members engage in happened while Gene Roddenberry was alive.  The facade fell very soon after Gene died.

ah, well. The struggle continues. This was a bit interesting as an interview, though.
