I'm warning you guys, don't get your expectations up. The trailer is a window into the filmmaker's mind and what kind of story they are hoping to tell. All indications are that the story in this film will be poorly fleshed out. The characters will be kind of just there. The movie will be a sleekly produced but vapid Revenge of the Sith meets The Godfather Part 3 meets standard Hollywood blockbuster fare.

What kind of character fleshing-out can you expect from a trailer for a film with a big cast?

Who is the main character? Are they a Jedi? A wizard? A Paladin? What thing has caused them distress in their normal ordinary life such that they will be forced to journey into the world of the story?

The only thing this trailer does is put vague Star Wars like stuff on screen and tell you to come watch it because it's Star Wars.

It's not the film I want, so I'll be happy if it just doesn't suck and it doesn't look like it'll suck.

Disney wouldn't (and shouldn't!) risk their money on the Star Wars 7 I want which would involve many more puppets and would be considerably campier than RotJ.

To be fair, the OT trailers gave away zero plot aspects except for "Space, action, fun!"

 - There's a girl who thinks she's no one, but clearly dreams of getting off her backwater world... and then does and has adventures

- There's a disillusioned stormtrooper who, in seeking something to believe in, ends up with familiar heroes and a lightsaber, having adventures

- There's a bad guy who wants to carry on the legacy of Darth Vader

- Han is a very different man from the cynical, skeptical smuggler hired by an old man and a farmboy years ago

Sure sounds like two protagonists, a villain, and familiar supporting cast!

I think you guys are piecing together different parts of the puzzle (including leaked spoilers) rather than just taking a single trailer at face value.

I sometimes miss the days before the internet, when we could enjoy films for what they were. Nowadays, it's all "I hate the trailer. It doesn't have this. It doesn't have that. It's not like the Star Wars in MY head".

Do you mean the days before the internet or the days before the World Wide Web?

People were bickering about the then-forthcoming Revenge of the Jedi online on Usenet in 1982.

Right running the trailer by the better half who hasn't been following the spoilers and isn't really a fan but aware of the older characters. He reads the main female character as a archeologist or scavenger. He saw the trooper as a "clone warrior" who has crashed on "Tatooine". The masked guy worships Vader and wants to continue his success. The girl and the 'clone" guy (later working for the rebels) ends up on the Falcon and the original characters fight is reduced to the level of a myth and Han is confirming that myth to be true. The masked guy can use the Force to hurt people. The Clone is going to fight the masked guy with a blue sword.

That's his take. It's a baton passing of a simple story.

Make of that what you will but it's certainly more story lead than just splosions, colours and shapes.

Google Groups has the most complete archive, but the search is broken.

DejaDejaDeja.com has a much better search, but it's only 1981-1991.

The World Wide Web, of course. (I can't imagine your average Joe using Usenet in 1982)

To clarify what I was saying: I just feel like people can become a bit too passionate about things - Star Wars especially - and everyone wants it to be a certain way and if it isn't exactly how it is in their heads then it's obviously crap.

I'm not expecting transcendence with the new Star Wars film (that train left after Empire), but if I get something along the lines of the first Clone Wars cartoon or some of the better Star Wars video games then I'll be satisfied.

So far the story looks satisfying (Darth Vader cult, remnants of old Empire, Luke as hermit) and while I'm sure I will be unsatisfied with certain details, I am looking forward to seeing what modern filmmakers will do with the franchise (especially Rian Johnson)

Anyone noticed from the trailer how the film might follow the same story structure from the first film?

Person A, who was involved in a fight with (the remnant of) the Empire and knows a terrible secret about them (R2-D2, Finn), crashes on a deserty planet. There he meets Person B (Luke, Rey), who's sick and tired of living on said deserty planet and wants to go on an adventure / leave it. The Empire tracks down Person A's location, Person B's place gets destroyed by the Empire as a result. They're now forced to escape the planet and they meet Han and Chewbacca, who take them off the deserty planet after a short exciting fight scene. Meanwhile, there's Person C (Leia, Poe Dameron), who's been captured by the Empire under command of Person D - who has a mask and a morphed voice - (Vader, Kylo Ren) (Twist might be that he is related to Luke?). Person C is manipulated into giving information to Person D, and he is forced to see his planet get destroyed by the secret(?) superweapon - which has a giant laser and a long trench (Death Star / Starkiller Base). Person A, who's now been trained to use the force and / or a lightsaber, fights Person D but loses (dies?). Person B is sad of this loss. The film ends with a massive dogfight, where the rebels have to destroy the Empire's superweapon. Superweapon gets destroyed, huge explosion, big celebration, cue end credits. We don't find out the exact identity of Person D and while he *might* have disappeared (sorta-kinda cliffhangers for the next movie), surprise surprise, he returns in the next movie!

Again, just a mostly silly theory. I might be looking too much into it and I see its holes; I don't know where all the stuff on the forest planet would fit in in, for example (place where Finn learns to use the force and / or a lightsaber, I guess).

 No thoughts on this silly theory by a silly lurker? );

JJ has already mostly remade ANH with Star Trek (2009). He would probably get away with doing it again but his name will be mud here.

I seriously doubt that Abrams had a big say in the making of this trailer. Since when was movie trailer a "window into the filmmaker's mind"? It's almost exclusively been a reflection of current marketing trends. I mean just look at the old SW trailers; they couldn't have been more 70's and 80's. The original ANH trailer was trying to sell the film as some moody space mystery film, because space opera's weren't really a popular thing back then (not yet anyway).
It is a very rare thing to see a trailer made by the filmmaker himself.

Btw, here's the trailer for The Empire Strikes Back. It has zero dialogue from the film in it, no plot is mentioned what so ever other than what the title implies, and it is filled with shots of explosions, spaceships, and aliens.
"A big sprawling new space adventure."
