^Shame to waste a beautiful actress by having her play some goofy CG alien.
Unlike you, perhaps Abrams and co. are more interested in her talent than her appearance.
Because we can't have both, right?
That kinda looks like her anyway.

That is a cool bit of casting. I wonder if they got anybody else who had a bit part in the original film?
Where were you in '77?
There's been speculation that the small person handing the lightsaber to Leia in the trailer is Lupita's character, in which case it looks like her skin may be orange now.

Maybe Femi Taylor... I'm sure she can bring a developed and well-rounded character to the screen again :)

I have to say, I've been very surprised by that also. If I had her in the cast of a film, I'd want her on screen as much as possible. That's an awful lot of talent and beauty to cover up with an animation.
I only know Lupita Nyong'o from pictures and clips from interviews, but I agree she is someone I'd want non-CGI'd. She has such an interesting, and attractive, look.
The blue elephant in the room.
Looks like a Gossam as introduced in AOTC:
It's a safe bet she gets a cameo in the flesh someplace in the movie, much like Ahmed Best did in AOTC.

As much as I get it, I guess this is a good way of showing that she's valued for her acting not just her looks, you know?

I would hope so. Her talent and credibility are a given. People want to work with her for a reason. She brings depth and weight to a role.
From my shallower side; I wouldn't cast a woman this beautiful and then draw a cartoon in her place.
It's no more surprising than if she looked like Ted Burnett.
She is hired to play the character not sleep with director... it's the 21st century so hopefully that sort of thing doesn't happen any more ;-i
It's a bit sad that an non-caucasian actor is not physically on screen again.
Hopefully this time they would have learned from the Stepin Fetchit fiasco and not coached her to play the alien in the mode of Hattie McDaniel.

Hey, it was good enough to win an Academy Award!
I guess I'm alone in not finding her attractive....
I do think it's a pity they're giving her the Ahmed Best treatment, however. Hopefully the alien she plays doesn't end up being nearly as goofy.

Hattie McDaniel got an an award in a film set when and where it was made when it was.
A CGI alien played my a non-caucasian actress in that mode would be Mammy Jar-Jar.

You nailed it.
Some seem to be forgetting that they are trying to get the best actor/actress playing these parts, not if they're beautiful or not.
And I'm certainly not worried about there being a Jar Jar character in TFA. JJ has made it clear of his disdain towards him ;)
She has a particularly striking appearance, whether one finds her attractive or not, and she is recognized as a talented actress. With that combination, how can one not wonder at casting her in an apparently minor role obscured by CGI?
'Hot off her Oscar win, beautiful talented actress earns herself a bit part as a CGI alien in the upcoming Star Wars movie'...doesn't work for me on the surface. It's not like Star Wars needed a star presence in a small role.
Maybe the role is really cool and maybe well served by her voice and physicality. I certainly hope her casting wasn't about her race. Though I appreciate Bingo's concern as there is a record of casting non-whites in alien parts.
I agree with SilverWook that there is a good chance she, like Serkis, would have a second role.

Have seen her contract to be so sure?

@Mrebo, We don't know how much screen time she'll get, but since she is a mo-cap character, my guess is she won't have a minor role. If Lupita wasn't up for getting that part, she wouldn't be doing it :)
Before my opinions on her get misunderstood, let me be clear. I appreciate her talent and physical beauty in equal measure. She's going to bring the depth regardless of how they present her.
They wouldn't have hired her otherwise. As rebo said, they don't need an A-lister in a small role. They need her talent for something that character provides within the story. We'll have to wait and see.
To put it more clearly with regard to how I feel about her physical beauty; why CGI over her at all? Why can't she bring gravitas to the character (which is a given), as well as be seen? Why an alien? Why not a human as a close friend or pivotal character?
To borrow from an episode of Doctor Who where a character sits on a planet-destroying weapon, much to the dismay of the person wielding it;
War Doctor: Don't sit on that!
Moment: Why not?
War Doctor: Because it's not a chair, it's the most dangerous weapon in the universe.
Moment: Why can't it be both?

It's a Star Wars movie where there are aliens... so why not have an alien as a close friend or pivotal character? So far the only (good) character that's been either of those was Chewie, so it's great they're attempting to branch it out more. Sure they could've had anyone for the part (A-list actress or not, beautiful or not, etc.), but since JJ felt Lupita was perfect for the part and she obviously wanted the part, that's how it is - simple as that :)
A fair point, well made.
