I agree that AOTC has a very good story buried in there somewhere, when you disregard all the lines and most of the movie itself. I rememberer enjoying the beginning very much when I first saw it. It has some really cool moments (again, disregarding the execution). The assassination attempt and R2 in a dark room surveying it meanwhile the Jedi were discussing in the next room, then some chasing in the Coruscant underground and bars, Obi-Wan going alone on his mission like a detective, meets the assassin, meanwhile the kids have same alone time of their own… Okay the rest of the movie goes more pointless to me, even story-wise. I hate the arena battle and Geonosis etc. Anyways, too bad the execution was just poor. Lines were cheesy, the chase was trying to be funny, it’s too cartooney, the underground wasn’t interesting or menacing, and the love story… ugh. Obi-Wan’s mission was pretty good though, even though the whole cloning/cloners thing was bad as well.

So… most likely, Harmy is right. It just depends how much you disregard what you see. Is the whole cloning mess part of the story too? And Dooku’s weird plan? I haven’t seen AOTC in 7 or 8 years so I don’t remember exactly how the story progressed actually. Anyways, nice analyzing. Too bad the end product is probably the poorest (or is it…).

And in the time of greatest despair, there shall come a savior, and he shall be known as the Son of the Suns.

In moderation a character with those traits can still be likable. But I see those qualities as natural for a young Vader.

Well in theory execution could make him sort of likeable but in the end a person with those kind of traits (I also forgot to add “selfishness”) simply cannot be the decent/good person that Obi-Wan talked to Luke about in ANH.

I feel that his traits and the concept of his fall should completely different. A very good example of how it could be done is a back-story to KOTOR1.

I think that on paper AOTC has a coherent plot, but in practice I don’t think that it is really possible for an average viewer to follow any of it, especially because of the pointless travel with Anakin and Padme. That being said, I think that Clones had the most potential given the outline.

In my opinion Anakin from Clone Wars really illustrates how that kind of character can work if done well. He’s still hotheaded and impulsive but there’s a heart and passion there that didn’t exist in the prequels. In Clone Wars you get the sense that Anakin is damaged and misguided but he’s still fundamentally a good person. His passion, for his friends, for his wife, toward his moral convictions, is ultimately his downfall. He doesn’t know how to let go. I think that’s what George was ultimately going for in the prequels but the character wasn’t fully baked and Hayden’s performance only exacerbated the problem.

This. +1

What’s the internal temperature of a TaunTaun? Luke warm.

To me, what sums up Episode II is “Best story, worst execution”

I was wrong on the matter, and I hope that, with time, I wll be forgiven.

Coming back with a new account after being banned doesn’t get you forgiveness, it gets you another ban.

The idea of both sides of a war being worked by the same player is quite sophisticated for this sort of movie (though that’s really the basic story of the PT as a whole). It’s the bit of the trilogy where we see it most though.
All the plot notes could have worked but the script is a mess, the direction is dull, the performances are terrible, the effects are inconsistent, the mystery aspect makes as little sense as Luke’s rescue plans in ROTJ.
Also it makes more sense if Padme is chasing awkward chaste Anakin. The other way around just comes across as being really creepy especially after Anakin confesses to a brutal massacre including children FFS.

Well, Frink’s edit makes Padme out to be a temptress of sorts. 😉

There’s no “of sorts” about it!

Don’t worry about me; I have too many real-world problems to worry about to care about the PT (or anything SW-related) anymore.
