EQ Audio Hiss

I'm trying to kill the annoying "hiss" present in my TV captures of Waterworld, and I lose most of it when I trim the audible range down to 40Hz to 5,100Hz. Am I losing a lot of the movie's sound as well? I admit I don't know a lot about EQ and I'm simply cutting in from -Infinity dB at 39Hz to 0 dB at 40Hz. I'm using the Audio EQ effect in Sony Vegas.

I'd expect that using a filter designed specifically for noise reduction/hiss removal would cause less damage to the soundtrack than simply using the EQ to lop off all high frequency content.

Are there any you can recommend? I've used one in Audacity, though I'm not sure how much is lost while using it.

I've used a noise reduction plugin in SoundForge to remove clicks and pops from an audio capture, but I haven't done any comparison of hiss removal techniques.

You might be able to find some useful advice at the Hydrogenaudio Forums.
