Yeah, they removed the eyebrows but it’s still Shaw.

It’s still him, but they screwed around with his face in editing to make him seem like he was Idiot Idiotsen instead of Shaw. So you were right, from a certain point of view.

Is it possible this subforum is the worst Star Wars thing ever made?

Author

“This subforum” would include that thread.

It’s nothing compared to that horrible article claiming that AOTC was the first good Star Wars movie ever made.

I don’t even want to try to think of the rationale for such a horrid opinion.

This was real? I don’t believe it.

Not enough people read the EU.

Worst Star Wars thing? Um…I’d say The Holiday Special, but even that benefits from the original actors returning, and watching it feels like an accomplishment, a testimony to being a Star Wars fan.

Probably The Clone Wars movie.

I dunno, I saw the Clone Wars movie not too long ago, and while it was hardly impressive on any level, I didn’t find it THAT bad.
The Holiday Special though… I think Chris Stuckmann summed it up quite nicely; “People… MADE this. How. Does that. Happen?!”
There might be plenty of bad Star Wars stuff, but that special is the only one where its very existence baffles me.

No doubt it’s baffling when seen 38 years later, but at the time it wasn’t. Star Wars wasn’t the grand visually Rhyming entity created by the genius Ring master Lucas * genuflect *. It was just a single story in a single film. There was no Original Vision™, so this was the third story written to expand the Star Wars universe. I’ll research, but Star Wars may have still been playing in the theaters at the time. It was that big of a deal.

Like millions of fans back then, I’d seen Star Wars countless times and had worn out the soundtrack. A year later we were all anxiously awaiting another look at the Star Wars universe. All we’d had until then was Splinter of the Mind’s Eye, which I’d started to read but which didn’t stick with me until decades later. It’s now Personal Canon.

I was one of the millions who tuned in that evening in 1978 and I was one of the millions who felt let down. It was a weird mess. I haven’t seen it since. Come to think of it, it may have been baffling 38 minutes later. Maybe I’m ready for a second viewing after all these years. I can take it. Probably.

Okay sorry, let me rephrase; The fact that there is a Star Wars Christmas special isn’t surprising… but literally every single creative choice in it is so logic-defyingly awful that I can’t imagine how anyone could have read that script and said “Okay, I have no problem with the idea of having my name associated with this product”. Or that anyone could have written that script in the first place…

I guess when the prime time line-up was Love Boat, ChiPs, Starsky & Hutch, Three’s Company, Donnie & Marie, and Vega$ - how much worse could it have been?

Wait, don’t answer that. 😉

It was the 70’s. Variety shows still walked the Earth. Someone even thought reviving the Brady Bunch as a series of musical variety specials was a good idea. Most of these were not taped by fanatical Star Wars fans and endlessly copied and passed around. They were one offs, never shown twice.

If you want a further example of 70’s zaniness, check out the Paul Lynde Halloween Special. It’s on Youtube, features Margaret Hamilton reprising a certain Witch from Oz, and also was the tv debut of a some clean cut musicians who call themselves KISS.

I actually like Starsky & Hutch.

SONIC RACES THROUGH THE GREEN FIELDS.
THE SUN RACES THROUGH A BLUE SKY FILLED WITH WHITE CLOUDS.
THE WAYS OF HIS HEART ARE MUCH LIKE THE SUN. SONIC RUNS AND RESTS; THE SUN RISES AND SETS.
DON’T GIVE UP ON THE SUN. DON’T MAKE THE SUN LAUGH AT YOU.

She had to have been pushing 80 by then.

She was in her early 70’s when the special was made. She was pretty spry for her age though. Maybe she really was a witch? 😉
