FYI I am uploading the Interactive Board Game video in 19 segments.  I will make a dlc file and distribute it to those interested as an alternative to the torrent.

Ok so I've ditched the emperor getting picked up by the executor on coruscant.... I'd like to do It but I am running out of time and there is more important shots and storyboarding to focus on so I have started doing the a new opening and then I will try to focus on finishing up tattooine and the emporers arrival I have some mock-ups for coruscant but I'll load them up later on... It's alot of work but I really want to get it all done before my trial expires of after effects

It sounds like you're gaining a lot of experience and learning quickly.  It might be worth it for you to pay for the full version.  Again, I hope to see how it turns out.  Though I'm not sure it would fit in this collaborative version, I have to be honest that I'd love to see the Executor.  I really think you should ultimately make your own edit when we're done with this :)  Your radical ideas honestly sound really fun.

Sorry I've been gone so long guys. Had some personal stuff to deal with.

Anyone wanna fill me in on what's been going on here?

It's actually been pretty slow, but the biggest news is that we're seeking out new footage.  We've come up with some material from both Star Tours releases and an old Star Wars board game.

So some bad news.  The video collector who assured me that the version of Star Tours he was selling me was not the same as the YouTube yellow version...yeah, it's the exact same video.  Well, maybe it's good enough to be color corrected, but once again, I can't do it, and people here are already so busy taking care of real life and addressing other aspects of editing.  I had my hopes pretty high, and I'm honestly really disappointed.  Can it be fixed?  Does anyone want to try to correct at least portions of it?

EDIT: I shouldn't wallow in self-pity.  I hope everything's okay, MrInsaneA.  We're glad you're back!

Oh, I did forget to mention that I'm trying to organize the needed edits so that folks can more easily know which aspects to tackle and what is needed.  Again, it takes a while, but I'm trying to get it ready.

So I don't know if it helps, but I've got three different versions of varying quality.  The one I just purchased is lacking most color, there is a handheld camera version I downloaded from YouTube (Harmy's suggestion) that has great color but is very shaky, and I downloaded a copy by a fellow named Martin Smith which is better color than the yellow version, but still not a whole lot of color.  It looks like it was probably a handheld camera version that was edited frame by frame to only include the screen and is thus not shaky, but it shows a standard camera shot from the audience in a couple of points as filler when apparently the better source didn't work out.  I don't know if somehow using all three version could help an ambitious person to recreate something closer to the original or not.  I imagine it would be a very interesting preservation project, but I don't know if someone talented is interested in the idea enough to devoted the time to it.

Ok so I got my suggestion put together for a new opening/begining no audio and no scenes with vader as I did plan to but don't want to spend anymore time if this gets shot down so Vader is on the last star destroyer that jumps in and the sequence would end on him looking out the window or choking an admiral of the other star destroyer undecided but I would need an overwhelming response of yes this is a really good idea to develop it further but this is a way ROTJ could start....Or perhaps ditch it or draw inspiration from it

The first shot is intended to be immediatley after the opening crawl

Basically Bobba Fett sends a transmission of the plans to home one after they pay him which would be displayed on the screen inside slave 1 after this all hell breaks loose

Audio lines are:

Rebels on radio bobas cockpit"Do you have it?"

Boba "After I get Paid"

after star destroyers jump in madine looks about " Star destroyers have enetered our sector!"

could use some pilots!!!

Madinde "prepare to make the jump to hyperspace on my mark" after he lost lots of souls bless him

Vaders lines from Interactive Boardgame undecided

http://www.mediafire.com/?yh38u0d8a5dx831

To join the dots the audio in the briefing from mon mothma is changed to "The infomation brought to us(cut by the Bothan spies) pinpoints(add sss) the exact location of the deathstar" and "Many (cut Bothan spies) died bringing us this infomation"

Not a bad mockup, and now that I understand it better, it seems very exciting.  Considering what the team is going for, I'm not sure it's a good fit for our edit, but I have to be honest, I really like where you're going with it.  I hope you do choose to flesh it out.  I really mean it.  I want you to make your own edit as well, as you've got some great ideas.  I of course hope you'll continue to contribute heavily here, but your ambitious ideas could make a very interesting alternative version.  In my opinion, there is no definitive version of these movies.  I can enjoy several different takes, and if you make an alternate, I'm sure I'd be very pleased :)  Your skills are really improving there, and you've talked me into downloading the trial version as well, though I'll probably end up wasting most of the time.

Thanks D...

It's really time consuming wether it is because I am a beginner or all this stuff just takes time anyway......

So what is the opening scene? is it nailed down as solid now as a dagobah opens it all?

I just did this idea, because I wanted to fill the gaps in what was there story wise and amalgamte alot of other peoples ideas including my own into it... It would be a big undertaking and It has taken me ages just to pull the mock-up together and adjust it etc

Anyway I could not do this on my own either because it would need alot of cgi models sfx and music too,,,, I think I will leave it there

Question for the amazing editors: is it possible to stabilize the shaky camera from the Star Tours handheld cam videos?  I know After Effects has Warp Stabilizer?  Could something like that produce a decent quality, stable, nicely colored copy of one of the HD YouTube videos?

Guys, I'm just realizing that we essentially voted for a forest fire on the Endor surface (passing MrInsaneA's suggested images on the vote).  How on earth (or Endor) can we do this?  I don't see how we could work the beautiful image into a reasonable plot device.  We're already trying to show the Ewoks in a disadvantaged position and only surviving because the generator is destroyed and the Imperials are then disorganized.  I don't see how with available footage we could make a reasonable plot line involving that, both because a forest fire would completely destroy them, and also because we'd have to show some resolution to this.  It just seems unreasonable to me.

I'd like to know WHAT I'm basing my rough draft on. A revised version of the script would be nice, since a lot of voting would've changed the material.

It might be possible to give the ideas of raging fires on Endor through the use of a montage. There is that montage series of shots with Ewoks tripping AT-ST walkers and the like where footage like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FdayNALle_s (burning forest shots from Old Republic trailer, 34-48 seconds in) could be incorporated. I think there are some shots in Battle For Endor that could be of use too.

Thats really funny,,,,

Yep alot of work just putting this mock-up together also...

It's a big opening... Thats meant to leave you satisfied, aswell as fill in the plot gaps until luke starts fighting the rancor 40mins later. and the sail barge 50mins later The models on sci-fi 3d could be used so It's only the animation that would need doing which I guess Is a 3rd of the workload gone so I don't feel too bad about suggesting such an elaborate opeing or re-using some footage in it also .  But it needs pilots  thats the problem

but you also get to see more of boba fett and slave 1 and vader would also be added I like the idea home 1 is the ship to open the film also rather than another star destroyer...

So nobody's up for a 2.5 minute space battle at the begining to set the sub-plot story up? Nevermind...

Well, I uploaded the Interactive Board Game in 19 parts, but JDownloader doesn't seem to recognize that the files are there, though they indeed are.  I uploaded to 2share, so I guess anyone who wants to can download each portion individually.  Sorry about the inconvenience.

Well, you know what they say, if you want something done, you've got to do it yourself.  I am using a free program called AVIdemux, and I'm having some decent results.  It will probably never be anywhere close to perfect under my hand, but at least I can show what is possible, and perhaps somebody with the know-how will fix it some time.  I really feel there is a ton of potential to this footage.  I'll post it when I'm done.

This is the original rip the definition is better as it has the test bars and his video player adjusts the tracking lol which other people edited out but was obviousky ripped from video tape...

I nearly had it there before so I will give it another go in after effects using the satuation and colour correction but with this footage instead

this is once agin the pissy yellow one but a bit better

the test bars will come in really handy for the colour correction also :)

Yeah, it's difficult with this program, especially since I don't know most of what I'm doing.  I just keep making stabs in the dark.  I don't always have a preview option in this program, so I adjust it in a separate window, then hit preview to see how it turned out.  But the truth is I'm getting decent results, so I'll keep trying for a bit and see how it turns out.

PS Thanks Ron for the suggestion.  I actually found a pretty good quality version (same yellow crappy source, but as good as it gets), and I'm using that one.  I suspect you will get better results, so keep at it too :)

Author
Time

So I am currently converting it to an mpeg.  As the source material is low quality, I couldn't seem to improve the detail, but it looks a lot better, particularly the colors.

So I'm finally getting around to interpreting the votes and updating the script.  A couple of things did not pass the vote except through the maybes.  The way of interpreting maybe votes is that they count as 1/2 a yes vote.  If there are more no than yes votes, the maybes may tip the vote, not so that it becomes a yes, but that it is up for further discussion.  Here are the raw results again.

So up for further debate is the Bothan thing.  The nays outweigh the yeas, but the maybes bring it up for further debate.  I personally think the idea needs to go.  This edit will be radical in some regards, and perhaps a leter edit can expand upon this, but I personally feel that the Bothan thing can go, and if anything needs to be changed to avoid this issue, we can simply remove the Bothans line from Mon Mothma.  That means even that we don't have to show any spy stuff or information transmission.  Again, I want to emphasize that I like Ronsters alternative opening, and I hope he doesn't give up on it, as I'm sure he can learn the skills needed to make it reality if he wants to.  But I think for this edit it might be best to keep it simple.

This of course means we don't have to debate the appearance of the Bothans.  But we're still very unsure of what they look like, though overall the maybes tipped it to be more like the EU canon (and the maybes did not tip it towards simply being human).

At a tie (or the simpler version slightly lost), but both winning with the maybe votes is the extended Dagobah opening with Yoda giving Luke a green crystal for his lightsaber and Luke also constructing the lightsaber with the Force.  I really like these ideas, believe me, but again I'm concerned about the possibility of doing it.  I really think reused footage should be used cautiously, probably not involving characters, and altered to the point that it's not obvious.  Any reused footage would be too obvious in this scenario I fear.  The crystal thing might be possible alone without this problem, but can it be done with our special effects crew?  And if so, is it too distracting from the important emotional and expository aspects of the scene where Yoda dies?  Do we need it?  I'm not sure.

I forgot to include Sluggo's idea about the droids landing on the skiff in the last vote.  I will try to do so in the next round, but I'm going to go ahead and add it to the script, because I think it would be worthwhile.  If no one opposes, I'll write it in (I was sold on it, if that's not clear).

I'll talk more about results later.

Another note is the matter of efficiency.  Let me precede that thought by something said in another thread.  This edit was called "darth_ender's edit."  I don't feel this is fair, because while I am clearly the one who made the first post and I'm clearly quite passionate about it, I am not the one doing any editing at all.  At best, I could be credited for the screenplay or something.  I don't want to be like George, taking all the glory for ideas, while others do the hard work.  The big downfall of his recent works is that he does not allow for enough of others' input.  I encourage it.  When it comes down to it, I want this edit to simply be subtitled, "The Collaborative Edit."  And I am being completely honest when I say that I wouldn't even be offended if my name never ended up in the credits.  I want no glory for my part in this edit.  I simply want to see it done.

With that preface, I think that once the third vote is over, I will be taking a more executive role, if that's okay with you guys.  This has become quite a task to keep track of everyone's ideas, and I'm sure we could come up with more and more till the end of time.  But this project is losing its steam, and unless I provide assignments, I fear it will never get done.  This of course would require the willingness of the editing team.  But what I propose is that when I've completed the final script, I will start delegating tasks to the editors.  They will still provide me with what they think is a reasonable timeframe, or perhaps an alternate preferred assignment if the one I've given is not up their alley.  That way we can see things getting done.

"I love democracy.  I love the Republic."

Okay, no, I'm not Palpatine.  I really don't want to be pushy, it's truly not in my nature.  But I believe if we convert this project into a machine rather than an idea pool, then it will actually get completed.  A collaborative edit is an ambitious thing, but if I continue to coordinate efforts, I'm positive it can be done.
