Yes, I might keep a dual layer version around, I'll just split the VOB files up into two discs worth.

Man, that 2004 transfer is just so blue.

Neil

Well at least the reversed surround channels have been addressed.

The blue brings out the snow battle so much better IMHO!

Now I know what George Lucas feels like.

Give the fans what they want .... and they'll bitch at you for 47 pages.

IT WAS A CREATIVE DECISION.

Heh.

Lucas wanted it to match the mood of the fans.

More sweet OCP work. The '04 transfer may not be 100% perfect, but the clarity *is* pretty damn nice, so the ocpmovie mix makes a lot of sense.

FWIW, I thought the initial screen caps were fine, and I don't usually look at those as definitive representations of the finished product on my TV anyway.

And man, was Leia hot or what?
We don't have enough road to get up to 88.

Well if you like that, but also want Han's hands & Vader's lightsaber not to be pink, check out Doctor M's re-inventing the wheel edition of ESB...it's purtyful

Oh and I found that thread about the crop:

Even the '97s weren't cropped, so this is offically yet another change.

Adam, I have noticed that in your sig, the little animated gif with the emoticons ... emoticon Vader's lightsaber is pink.

I am boycotting your sig for this reason.

I've been selling those to profit off of the pink vader blade in your Classic ESB.

Any reason why you went with Cowclops' transfer again? I would have used Moth3r's. (In fact I did. )

Okay - bowing to peer pressure, I've created a version of my Classic Empire in which Darth Vader has a red lightsaber. (A simple matter of chromakeying the pink one out.)

This does mean I have to reencode all the fight scenes myself, resulting in a slight drop in quality, particularly as there are those saturated reds and oranges which the DV codec hates.

But oh well.

It remains 2004 DVD quality, and the saber is red, so I hope you're happy.

I have also restored the flopped insignia on Piett and the 12-year-old lieutenant at the end of the film.

I looked carefully at the reframed scenes in the Falcon. My, there sure are a lot of reframed shots there.

I have chosen to leave these untouched, since this is an analog change rather than a digital change, done with Kerschner's blessing (as were most of the SE changes) and it does seem like a good idea to zoom in a bit on those scenes and not show too much of the cockpit. Also it would have been possible to do in 1980.

Consider this a deliberate creative decision.

As for using the Cowclops transfer, well, Moth3r's transfers are great, but I don't have his Empire or Jedi, and I used the first Cowclops (TR47) transfer for the ANH Classic Edition anyway, I kind of consider myself a Cowclops stalwart.

As in ANH, the use of laserdisc footage in this edit is so quick and minor that I would dare anyone to notice the difference anyway. =)

Still, not a bad idea to grab his transfer if I ever do Jedi. I'd also like to really learn good FCP techniques for reverse telecine (60i to 24p) to make full use of dark_jedi's fullscreen versions of the trilogy (his Jedi beats hell out of any other version out there).

I should actually look at the making of the SE and Empire of Dreams before I sign off on this edit as well, maybe grab some 60i bits of shots from there too.

Have you considered using Dr. M's Re-inventing the Wheel version of ESB? It is wonderous & I could get you a copy if you like.

That's too late for this particular project as I'm otherwise done. For Jedi though, that might be of interest. Wouldn't I rather have the PAL Moth3r original rather than some NTSC conversion?

Parts of some shots I need did turn up as 60i fullscreen in the making of the SE doc, and so I'm gonna try and figure out how to IVTC them. Never done so before and there isn't much info out there for Macs, but I hear Cinematools can handle it.

There is also a plugin by nattress (nattress.com) which can try to remove ugly DV color artifacts, which is pretty remarkable, I'd like to have a look that that, but it's for sale rather than freely downloadable, and I don't see it on Acquisition P2P. If not for the DV artifacts this would be a perfect edit. Ah well.

I haven't done Jedi yet!

I reverse telecined some shots from Making of the SE, and it was somewhat helpful for a couple of shots in the wampa cave and the entrance to Cloud City. Slight improvement, and it also helped me color correct some shots better to match Lucasfilm's official version.

The fullscreen dark_Jedi transfer shots didn't IVTC properly - it seems that the film was slightly sped up in the conversion to cheap laserdisc, and it's not a normal pulldown at all, it skips fields all the time. I am hoping that the fullscreen Jedi IVTCs properly, as that was a better laserdisc transfer.

The fact that I can't use this fullscreen version of Empire is not a huge loss, as the fullscreen transfer for Empire was kind of poor.

What you describe sounds to me like time compression, a process used to fit movies onto a single CLV disc.
