CROCODILE DUNDEE - 1080p video & Uncompressed audio from Laserdisc (Released)

Gents, my all time favorite romantic comedy is CROCODILE DUNDEE. I saw it in a packed theater upon its initial release and I cannot think of another experience where the audience broke out into applause and cheers of joy at the end. Not mild applause. We are talking about 400 people clapping, hollering, whistling and cheering.

Unfortunately, Paramount has not seen fit to release this blockbuster on Blu-Ray. The DVD is just dated, with a soft picture caked in edge enhancement and a soundtrack that’s flat and lifeless at a compressed 192kbps.

Enter… a mystery 1080p transfer and the PCM audio from the laserdisc.

Shockingly, the audio lined up exactly. I didn’t have to do any shifting at all. That’s never happened tome before.

The PQ is a huge improvement over the DVD, but it is filtered and DNR’d. Not waxification, mind you. But it’s clearly an iTunesish like master.

The final BD will be about 20GB in size. I’m not sure how I’ll be sharing it but I will absolutely get the PCM audio track hosted by tomorrow for anyone who wants it.

That's awesome Matt, i really like this movie definitely would like to get this.

Mystery 1080p transfer, what could it be?

Agreed, great film.

What do you mean by "mystery" video source? Was it not identified as HDTV, D-VHS or whatever?

Is it uncensored? (The UK home video version had the coke-taking scene removed, IIRC)

cold be a very old hd cap, from around 2006 or a vudu hdx cap.

i still have a high bitrate 1080i version of part 2.

i'm also interested in the audio :)

Gents, it's the U.S. cut as shown in U.S. theaters. I've never heard of a laserdisc for the Aussie version so there'd be no way to get good audio for it. I hope that one day we see an SE release of the longer cut (which I have never seen).

A friend of mine called me and said he had a 1080p source that was perfect 23.976 but couldn't divulge where he got it. All of the HD cable broadcasts I've seen of this film were cropped, but this is OAR.

So naturally I said "I want it!" and he sent it to me as a BluRay with 192kbps audio. I then used captured PCM to sync up and presto, a version that will look good and sound killer (especially in Pro Logic II mode).

I'll post screen shots tomorrow.

Already using my DVD as a coffee coaster. :)

Not that big of a secret when both iTunes and vudu have 1080p versions.

What's the big deal?

I'm just having fun but I don't actually know where it came from. And I've seen plenty of 1080i transfers converted to 1080p so who knows.

Im just thrilled to have it. The DVD was just not acceptable on a large screen.

Sounds cool, I haven't seen this one in years!

Yeah, I figured if it wasn't an HDTV rip it was probably a WEB-DL from iTunes or similar. I've seen 720p WEB-DLs online but couldn't find a 1080p download.

But it seems much bigger file size for a web-dl?

If it's from iTunes or Vudu etc. I imagine whomever got it then converted to lossless and then re-encoded for a BD25. That's my best guess anyway.

But...that...is not how that works?

It sure is if you need to work on the video, like color etc.

Plus, AVC / H.264 in an iTunes file is not Blu-ray compatible - hence the issues DFNYC was having converting the Star Trek Into Darkness Enhanced Commentary.

You want to put something to play on a Blu-ray player, you need to convert it to a Blu-ray compatible video file.  Same CODEC is not enough.

a little info

the pcm provided by matt just matches the itunes version. no adjustment needed. i compared the waveforms in audacity.

without seeing the final video, one could assume that the source of matt's video is coming from itunes. it would be a very big coincidence if a different source has the same exact beginning and (almost) ending - pcm is 6ms shorter then the itunes aac.

Hey Matt so is this coming out soon? if so will it have a menu and all?

Thanks

lol I was just reminded of this because Paul Hogan just made news today because him and Linda Kozlowski are getting a divorce after 23 years!

Holy shit! Man I didn't hear that. Such a shame.

It's basically finished. I'm just so swamped I don't have time to upload it anywhere, lol!

HAHAHA! It figures. Well, I don't object. I'm curious as to the sound. paramount sometimes cheaps out on the audio for catalog titles.

A shame it won't be the Australian cut (for film 1). No way will they spring for it.
