If home theater sales packaging was trustworthy ANH would have a character called Hans Solo prominently featured.

Hans?

So I guess the secret was out a long time ago :)

Well, that's pretty clear that senator Palpatine would become emperor Palpatine, but I think it's also clear that Palpatine is also Sidious. I remember before TPM came out it was a little difficult to tell who was who when there were Palpy and Amidala playing other roles which seemed a little weird.

And in the time of greatest despair, there shall come a savior, and he shall be known as the Son of the Suns.

Wasn't the novelisation out in 1976?

That's the first naming of the Palpatine character but as LexX says it doesn't directly link Sidious Snotus to him and there could well have been a twist that the guys writing the copy for the VHS box didn't know about.

Still, releasing the soundtrack to TPM before the film with a track called Qui Gon's Noble End was a bit of spoiler (not unless his Jedi flatulence control was a plot point worthy of a leitmotif).

Well, the only official looking VHS backs of Star Wars I can find just state Han Solo. To my immediate knowledge I don't recall any of the DVD releases containing that typo. However, since I am unable to instantly verify the official Star Wars ANH VHS covers backs having never seen one in person. (I owned a Star Wars ANH VHS but, never got the cover with it. We bought it from a rental place. Instead we got one of those neat hard VHS container thingy's whatever the fuck they're called.) I do know exactly what you're getting at though for example 2nd BSG's first season DVD conatains a now egregious error on the back.

"in the climax of a hundred-year war with the Cylon Empire," - 2nd BSG season 1 DVD case

They have been ruining the Emperor character since Dark Empire, no reason to stop after that when they gave him and Yoda lightsabers and had them bouncing around in the senate like frickin Loony tunes characters.

I like this.  This, as well as the original Star Wars novel, has no indication of Palpatine being a force-user, let alone a Sith.

What's wrong with BSG's 1st season DVD blurb?

Taking it completely litterally it says 100 years of war before the destruction. Which is completely untrue by just the first few moments in the pilot. It was about a day of bombs which caused people to flee. After a 40 year period of peace. Taken metaphorically like saying the initial Cylon war started 100 years prior is still false. Caprica a BSG prequel takes place 58 years prior and, they weren't in the midst of war then. They didn't even have a working Cylon. Even poetically I doubt they'd call a war that at most could've lasted 16 years a hundred-year war.

It should also be noted that John Williams gave us perhaps the clearest giveaway.  He used the Emperor's Theme during all of Sidious' scenes in Menace and Clones.  Emperor = Palpatine, Emperor's Theme = Sidious, therefore, Palpatine = Sidious.  And also the fact that the celebration music at the end of Menace is the Emperor's Theme in happy-mode.

Holy shit! I still hate that piece, but now it gets an additional meta layer at least... thanks! :D
