If collecting LD's is a fetish, does that make one a pervert? ;)

I got my Pioneer 704 repaired and refurbished earlier this year by these guys...

http://www.laserdiscservice.com/

I had almost written off my player as scrap before I found them. I actually think it runs better now than when it was new!  (The THX-1138 LD capture I sent to myscamore has benefited from it too.) They also sell refurbished machines. Well worth checking out.

Thank you, now I know where to take mine if something happens :P

Never had a lasedisc player, but for anyone who has the Star Wars LD Set  and the GOUT, which version would you say is better on an HDTV?

The GOUT looks far better to me than any of the LDs- especially on HDTV. That's why I'm getting rid of my LDs and player.

This is good LD reference site, I bought my Pioneer cld-d703 based on his recommendation (in the FAQ section):

Sounds like you are confusing video modes with analogue resolution.

Standard definition NTSC video is 480i - that includes VHS, LD and DVD. The video signal contains 480 horizontal lines of picture information (vertical resolution).

The ability of each of these lines to resolve fine detail is dependent on the analogue bandwidth - this can be measured in terms of horizontal resolution (vertical lines on the screen).

Roughly:
VHS = 3MHz, or 240 lines
Laserdisc = 5.5Mhz, 440 lines
DVD = 6.75MHz, 540 lines

You should never confuse this with digital resolution which is simply the number of discrete pixels, e.g. 720 x 480.

I would if I had a player...and the LDs to go with it...

Heck, I've been watching VHSes lately.

I have all three 1989 CBS releases that I found in a yard sale. I just have no way to play them at all. Really would like to.

Can't happen. Like regularjoe said, it was probably laser-rot.

Nope, wasn't laser rot at all. They where actually damaged by a cheap player ( cant remember the brand ) that actually ran hot quite often and it warped the discs enough for them to get scratched and that messed up the playback.

This happened way back in 1990 and I would have never thought that at the time, a laser disc could warp like it did in that player.  I had a friend who had a cheap pioneer player that warped a laser disc of Predator because it also ran hot for some reason. I actually had a Johnny Mnemonic that suffered from laser rot.

That is why you combine the 2.

But to answer the question, HELL no do I watch LD's anymore LOL, no need to now, ALL my gear and LD's is packaged and put away.

I would like to think the LD GOUT would sound better than the DVD GOUT because the LD GOUT is PCM stereo surround, where as the DVD GOUT is Dolby Digital 2.0, but thats just my own opinion.  However, to really benefit from PCM on Laser disc your player has to have a PCM digital out ( most of the cheaper Laser disc players of the time didn't have it). And analog outs sound crappy due to the players poor D/A converters.  I wish I had the GOUT DVD's to  do an A/B comparison.

The LDs certainly destroy the GOUT. I can only speak from going between the Faces ROTJ and the GOUT. No comparison at all!

You're right. That's what I meant to say essentially. Somehow it got stuck in my head the other way.

Wow! An actual LD repair center! My player has a few hiccups here and there so I might send it in at some point. About how much do they charge to take a look?

Getting rid of your whole LD collection simply for acquiring the GOUT seems like an insane idea to me.

Well, okay. I should have said 'under normal circumstances, it's can't happen'.

A player running hot, and f---ing up your discs really sucks. :(

This was almost a year ago, but IIRC, it only cost me shipping for them to check the player out. They identified what needed fixing, and gave me a quote. The turn mechanism on my player was busted, the rubber on the spindle was rotted, and the laser pickup had literally fallen off it's little track!

Total repair including return shipping to me in California was $201.50, a bargain in my book.

Depends. Here's one example:

http://www.aptirrelevance.com/otscreenshots/screenshots.php

Check out Shot 24 (Luke's blueish/white/green sabre training on the Falcon), every single LD capture has more detail in the floor grate, and shows the horizontal lines on Han's chair. Heck, even the '92 letterbox VHS beats it on that shot.

Not at all- it's true the LDs SOUND better (but dark_jedi has put the LD's PCM tracks on his GOUT versions).

The LDs look terrible to me compared to the GOUT. I thought at first it was my player (although my model was supposed to be one of the better ones for PQ), but when I saw the examples in the X0 project thread showing that the LDs looked inferior even on THAT machine, I think nearly everyone pretty much admits now that the GOUT is a better representation (at least visually) of the OT than the LDs.

Plus, the SW Gout disc has the original crawl. :-)

No I'm talking about getting rid of your ENTIRE LD collection, for simply getting the gout. There's still versions of movies, and shit you can't get on dvd or blu ray, no way I'd do that. (I'd get both the gout and keep the LD's if it were me.)

I don't really have an "entire" LD collection- LOL! Almost everything I have is (or soon will be) on DVD and/or blu-ray.

Aside from my various SW LDs, I only own Back To The Future, Blade Runner and Metropolis (Moroder version) on LD.

I'm just starting my collection, You should send me back to the future and metropolis. Lol I already have blade runner.

I can't stop collecting these. Mainly for the PCM sound. And my love of outdated technologies.
