Anamorphic widescreen (Help Please)

Hello,

I'm working on my "Thunderball" project, and I would like to make my DVD Anamorphic 16:9 widescreen to fit the new letterbox T.V. sets..

So far, I have taken the original widescreen Laserdisc of the film and captured it with Adobe to my PC. Now I have a 4:3 interlaced (720 x 480) NTSC master. I'm using Adobe Premier Pro & Adobe Encore to make my project...

What do I do?

You'll have to re-encode the video to anamorphic, but unless you are willing to do a lot of extra work/filtering, it isn't going to look very good. Blowing up a non-anamorphic transfer to anamorphic actually degrades the video. You need a master that has more video resolution than 720x480 (i.e. the original film) for it to be worthwhile.

Regarding the merits or otherwise of converting letterboxed to anamorphic, this was discussed at length some time ago:
this thread

To convert, you will need to first IVTC the video to make it a progressive 23.976fps.
Then crop the existing black bars, stretch the picture vertically by 33%, and finally add in new black bars if necessary.
