Joachim could have been thawed out first and we only see Khan inside a cryo tube. (Using an image of Montalban.) That could have worked. But I’m sure the suits at Paramount would have shot that idea down.

Ironically, the people I know who have never seen TWOK, and are only passingly familiar with TOS think STID is great.

Man, my respect for Lin, Pegg and Jung has increased even more. They interviewed Justin Lin and Simon Pegg in the latest Empire Film Podcast. During Lin’s interview he revealed that they only had two and half months to come up with a script before production started.

Roberto Orci was originally supposed to direct this film when he suddenly either dropped out or was fired. Abrams then quickly recruited Lin and the others to come in and start over from square one, without being allowed to read the original script. While also being saddled with the film’s original production schedule which was in place to see it out in time for the franchise’s fiftieth. They did a phenomenal job given those circumstances.

Sadly though it seems Paramount/Bad Robot are planning to resurrect that original script for the fourth film. Its two writers, J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay, are credited as the writers for “Star Trek 4.” Rumor had it that the plot revolved around time travel and that it was part of a plan to give William Shatner a cameo. Now it would seem instead of meeting Kirk Prime, it’s about Kirk meeting his dad, Thor.

That is stupid! They just closed up the Kirk daddy issues story line quite nicely, why re-open this can of worms? As I have stated, this is not my brand of “Star Trek”.

Remember how the original script was thrown out for being too “Star Trek-y” and everyone pitched a fit? Let’s not complain that they’re bringing it back. 😉

If Chris Hemworth wasn’t famous now, would they even be considering this idea?

The main reason that the original television cast films were appealing to me is that they are nostalgic beyond just the story telling. These “J.J. Trek” films just don’t have that important quality.

I’d never heard of Lin but my respect for him has plummeted from “unknown” to “ugh” after watching Beyond. And then I looked him up and discovered he directed four of the Fast and Furious movies, and it all makes sense.

I miss JJ.

How prominent is sulu being gay in terms of being shown?

I don’t care for me it doesn’t bother me at all but I’m going to see it with my grandpa. He’s been a diehard trekkie since TOS but he thinks homosexuality is wrong. He a never hateful or rude about it and would never put someone down for being gay, I just wonder how much behind-the-scenes bitching I’ll have to endure.

It’s a barely noticeable, blink-and-you’ll-miss-it background detail.

Minor spoiler:

All that happens is that Sulu puts his arm around a man and they walk off into the background with their daughter, so without prior knowledge of official statements, it could easily be Sulu walking away with his brother or another relative. I read somewhere that there was supposed to be a scene where they kiss, but it was cut.

END MILD SPOILER

I never followed the development of the film, was that reported somewhere?

Edit: Found it. That’s interesting. Didn’t you or someone you know interview those guys a while back?

I’ll have to give that another listen. I remember liking the guys but with Roberto attached I could only fear for the worst. Hopefully they’ll bring back Lin or someone else new and I can breath a little easier.

Well, I saw the Beyond tonight, and I like it more than STID. Lots of little touches throughout that gave it a TOS flavor, and a scene towards the end that brought a tear to this old Trekker’s eye.

I’ll digress more when there’s less chance of spoiling it for anyone else.

And not a lens flare in sight! 😉

I agree with this part. Sadly the rest of the movie ruined the whole thing for me.

With Beyond being released, I marathoned the Trek films, all 13. Here is my ranking, with X/10 ratings. (Here’s my Letterbox’d list if you want something more visual.)

  1. The Wrath of Khan - 8
  2. The Voyage Home - 8
  3. Beyond - 8
  4. Star Trek 2009 - 8
  5. The Search for Spock - 7
  6. The Undiscovered Country - 7
  7. The Motion Picture - 7
  8. First Contact - 6
  9. Into Darkness - 6
  10. Insurrection - 6
  11. Generations - 5
  12. The Final Frontier - 4
  13. Nemesis - 3

General comments…

Except for Nemesis, these are all enjoyable sci-fi flicks. Even the duds are still fun to a degree.

I forgot how solid the TOS cast movies are. The stories are great and I loved the the three-film arc with Spock. And holy hell they would never make a movie like Voyage Home nowadays. No villain, no action, all plot, barely even set in space, with some goofy comic relief? Studio execs would die laughing if you tried to pitch that script today.

TNG movies suffer from ridiculous writing.  The cast did the best they possibly could with what they were given, but they deserved such better. You know shit be bad when the best film includes a scene of Picard in a white tux shooting a 1930s style machine gun at a Borg in some hologram simulation bullshit.

NuTrek has been solid so far. Abrams’ biggest flaw is overuse of “homages” (<-- sarcastic air quotes) to Wrath of Khan. But he damn sure knows how to make a fun flick.

Oh also I highly recommend TM2YC’s fanedit of TMP, “Star Trek: Reunion”. Best fanedit I’ve seen in a while.

Personal nitpicks aside, I thought Beyond was a enjoyable movie. It unfortunately opened in a really cluttered summer market, and I don’t think the ads conveyed anything but the action.

And underneath it all, Gene’s optimistic vision of a bright future is still there. I think he would be pretty happy about that.

I completely agree. I think it’s one of the best summer flicks, along with Captain America: Civil War. It suffers from some of the same flaws as most modern action films (shaky cam, heroes survive impossibly, trying too hard to be cool) but man they sure nailed it with the main characters and the world the story is set in. I can understand the criticisms for it but I loved it.

I am getting ready to go see Beyond in the next week. I’m with FanFiltration when it comes to the Television Cast films for sure. I guess I’m interested in seeing this on the big screen just to give it a shot like I did the first 2 Kelvin Timeline flicks.

Mild spoilers aside, I’m hoping it isn’t all bad.

Beyond is my favorite film to come out this year so far, above 10 Cloverfield Lane and Civil War. I have my problems with Star Trek: The Star Trek (2009), and definitely with Into Darkness, but I’ll defend this film to the death.

I can understand people not liking the new cast as much as the old, but things like “Gene’s rolling in his grave!” just baffle me. Like the Wookiee said, his optimistic vision is definitely there if you look Beyond the action. 😉

I love the new cast. My problem with Beyond started and ended with the director.

Well, J.J. just had to go off and direct that pesky Star Wars thing, didn’t he? 😉

Well sure, but couldn’t they have found someone who had nothing to do with the Fast and Furious franchise?

Yep, it’s literally one shot in the entire movie. It obviously has an agenda but for those who were against it, it wasn’t very in-your-face and it doesn’t feel like it was even written that way originally.
