Actors/Characters Who Destroyed OR Helped a Franchise — Page 3

Sylar or Claire on Heroes. I don't know which of these two asinine characters outdoes the other when it came to destroying this show. Suffice it to say, they had no story past the first season and were the weak links that brought the show to its knees.

With the Star Wars prequels, there are almost too many characters to count! Jar-Jar, lil' Ani, older Ani, Padme, Jango, Boba, Sidious, Grevious, Yoda...really the only enjoyable characters IMO were Qui-Gon (whose impressiveness seriously dissipates when you start analyzing his actions), Obi-Wan (who didn't totally suck and had some memorable scenes, but oftentimes comes off as bland) and Palpy in ep. 1-2 (but his absurd self-parodying performance in ep. 3 basically cancels out his earlier respectable portrayals entirely).

I don't know what's worse, that you didn't say I helped or that you didn't mention me at all.

Sorry, Ric. My rationale was this: Your stellar contribution to The Phantom Menace is so well known, that to point it out would be to state the obvious. And since that's kinda your thing, I thought I'd leave it for you to point out.

I've only seen the first season of Heroes, and kind of liked it. I started season two and decided I'd continue to appreciate season one a lot more if I were to just stop right there and try to forget a second season was every made. And that is what I did.

As far as season one goes, I rather liked Claire. Sylar on the other hand, he was a good villian, but even by the end of the first season I was feeling a little burnt out on him. I can imagine any number of ways they could drag these two characters out over the next couple of seasons for something really awful.

However, from what I remember of season two, it was so unbelievably terrible, it really didn't need any help being destroyed from any of the characters, the writers seemed pretty hell-bent dedicated to bury it in the mud.

Good idea, that. I absolutely loved season one, then proceeded to wade through seasons two and three with gritted teeth before finally quitting in disgust. Pretty sad for a show to jump the shark at the beginning of its second season...

Alice from the crappy Resident Evil films.

Pretty much ended any chance of the films even resembling the games from the get go.
Not necessarily, the first one can be thought of as a kind of prequel to the games. Alice's name isn't even mentioned at all in the first one. She could be named anything you want just going off of the first film. The sequels really screwed things up though... Beside that the cast commentary track for 1 & 2 is really good. They make fun of the whole thing throughout it. I rented the DVD of 3 once to see if the commentary track was good, but it wasn't :(. They seemed to be forcing the humor aspect of the first two commentary tracks.

The second season suffered from the writers strike IIRC. They altered the ending because of it. Thusly the built up puzzle pieces of the second season made little to no sense and it never recovered.

Granted, the writer's strike took its toll on season 2. That being said, what excuse is there for the garbled mess that is season 3?

Imagine the third season as Sylar and His Amazing Friends, written by George Lucas, and you get a pretty accurate picture of how awful the show was at that point.

Dawn Summers - Buffy The Vampire Slayer

The show was beginning to get a little boring after High School was over for Buffy, so changes were made. Joss Whedon is an amazing writer when his shows don't last very long (FIREFLY), but when a show lasts as long as Buffy did, things just tend to go nowhere.

Somewhere in the last 25% of the shows run, Dawn Summers just popped up out of nowhere. Her presence was like a big screaming force yelling "This shows gonna suck now".

Buffy was always saving her ass, and after a while I was hoping Buffy would stake her. Instead the show opted for the same crap over and over.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

Rodney McKay - Stargate Atlantis (helped)

An occasional character that started off as an arrogant foil to Samantha Carter in SG-1 really helped Atlantis find its place amongst the stars. His familiarity, overconfidence, and humor really helped Atlantis take off at full speed. And the writers actually managed to give him arcs that made him sympathetic without neutering his character.

And to think they were going to introduce a whole new scientist for the series!

George R. Binks (Jar Jar's dad)--definitely helped!

Just think, if he had pulled the trigger *before* having Jar-Jar, we'd have all been spared.

Hayden Christensen in Star Wars obviously.

Jar Jar Binks.

Giving too much freedom to Patrick Stewart and that Data actor on the star trek next generation movies led to crap like Nemesis.

It probably didn't help that Nemesis director Stuart Baird was not very familiar with Star Trek or TNG in general, and allegedly thought Geordi was an alien!
