ANDOR - Disney+ Series - A General Discussion Thread — Page 18

Oh I agree. But to be honest I don’t think the political nature of Rogue One works in that context, where it’s still trying to be a fun action adventure story. The Alliance sending an assassin out or using bombers to kill a guy instead of rescuing him? That’s kinda sickening when it’s trying in some ways to still be a proper gee whizz Star Wars yarn. It’s not detached enough from the material where C-3PO is saying something funny or a bunch of muppets show up. And I wanted a proper heist movie and it’s only like fifty percent there. Andor works more for me because it goes like ninety percent into spy fiction territory.

I think this sums up exactly why Rogue One didn’t work for me. It was clearly trying to be a gritty spy thriller with a more grimdark take on the Star Wars universe, but the execution of that goal felt incredibly half-assed in the end. They were too worried that it wouldn’t feel like a “real Star Wars movie”, and the result is a confused jumble of “bombastic space opera” and “gritty war film” that just ends up feeling dull.

Andor is a lot better in that regard, because it actually commits to Rogue One’s promise of dark, mature Star Wars storytelling. It’s a show for adults, and it does not hesitate to let you know.

Maybe I’m just dumb, but other than the music evoking it - I really didn’t see Rogue One doing the classic gee-whizz space opera? They were kind of going from tragedy to tragedy, under the orders of a militarized intelligence op. Interspersed with drama more than any of the characters having some sort of clever fun. And they all die in the end.

I think the whole “grimdark tone” discussion is off-base of what I was actually saying about Rogue One’s internal logic though. ESB could be dark, ROTS could be dark, The Clone Wars could be dark. Rogue One is moving in a different space than just gesturing towards unpleasantness in the ways those do. I’m not denying the tonal dissonances in Rogue One, but the proto-Andor DNA can’t easily be washed out because K2 has some one liners (I’m assuming?).

K2 has a lot of dumb lines throughout. Donnie Yen is similar but gets less to do, instead of being a truly spiritual figure. Vader shows up and also has a bunch of dumb lines. He doesn’t need to be in the movie. Then there’s a whole ‘Rogue One’ call sign thing that somehow works. I mean if the Alliance was consistently ruthless they’d shoot down the crew to avoid a potential security breach, right? At this point it veers into the old dress up gag because it’s SW and I’m supposed to care they all die?

I dunno I just think that Andor works but it cuts all this stuff and replaces it with more focus on things that matter. The Clone Wars was the same… it came together when it stopped being about dumb PT characters and focused on random villains and soldiers. Anyway, it has a lot of time to gain traction since season two is a long way off. Time will tell.

I fixed that bit about Rogue One for you:

K2 has a lot of dumb lines great sarcastic quips throughout. Donnie Yen is similar but gets less to do, instead of being a truly spiritual figure and actually vies with K2 for “everyone’s favorite” character in the movie. Vader shows up and also has a bunch of one dumb lines (which initially bothered me, but doesn’t really anymore). He doesn’t need to be in the movie (but boy howdy, that Vader hallway scene at the end was Chef’s Kiss). Then there’s a whole ‘Rogue One’ call sign thing that somehow works (and by works, I mean to annoy the air traffic controller). I mean if the Alliance was consistently ruthless (as opposed to occasionally ruthless) they’d shoot down the crew to avoid a potential security breach, right? (I mean if they had turbo lasers on the pyramid on Yavin, that is) At this point it veers into the old classic dress up gag because it’s SW and I’m supposed to care pleasantly surprised they all die? (not that I was happy to see them all die, but it was a refreshing change of pace)

Preach. I don’t understand why everyone thinks Vader in the hallway is a top 10 Star Wars scene. Actually, I do: It’s because 90% of Star Wars fans only watch this franchise so they can see evil guys in cool helmets slaughtering nameless nobodies while epic choir music plays in the background. It’s the definition of “style over substance”, a phrase that can sum up the vast majority of Rogue One.

So I bit the bullet and watched Andor. As someone who initially loved Rogue One but found it weaker with each subsequent watch, and as someone who’s been turned off by everything else Disney’s had to offer thus far, I didn’t think I’d ever touch this show, but the continual praise convinced me to take a leap of faith.

I thought the first half of the season was a bit on the boring side, but once the proceedings on the sheep planet were through, I really came to admire the show. Though I love certain EU stories more, this is definitely the best thing to come out of the live-action/television corner of the SW Universe since 1980.

I give it a tentative 9/10. Here’s hoping Season 2 keeps the flow going strong.

“The Anarchists are right in everything; in the negation of the existing order and in the assertion that, without Authority there could not be worse violence than that of Authority under existing conditions. They are mistaken only in thinking that anarchy can be instituted by a violent revolution… There can be only one permanent revolution — a moral one: the regeneration of the inner man. How is this revolution to take place? Nobody knows how it will take place in humanity, but every man feels it clearly in himself. And yet in our world everybody thinks of changing humanity, and nobody thinks of changing himself.”

Good to see Andor get some more recognition and nominations:

Jamie Benning (Jambe Davdar of the Original Trilogy Filumentaries from here) will be hosting the “Behind The Magic: The Special Visual Effects of Andor” panel at Celebration 2023 in London:

Spitballing ideas into the void here…

I would love to see in S2 of Andor an attempt to assassinate someone like Tarkin, Krennic even Palpatine ala the Wolf’s Lair attempt on Hitler.

I am guessing via the absence of Palpy in most everything that he is this Howard Hughes style paranoid living in seclusion…which really doesn’t make much sense considering he is the Sith Lord of the day.

It would be nice to see a story arc that provides a reason for him to be living the way that he does.

IF he is living like a Howard Hughes paranoid can we at least have a scene of him shuffling around his office with Kleenex boxes for shoes?

I wouldn’t be surprised if Palpy shows up for more senate scenes to be honest. But the plot will probably revolve around them trying to find out what the super weapon is, to follow up the post credits tease. Plus they will have to find a way to lose characters who aren’t in Rogue One and deliver others. So bigger fractures between Saw and the Alliance, a reason to get K2 on board, the likely death of Bix and Vel. Maybe the defection of Galen Erso and the training of Jyn could be involved. What is the time frame?

I loved the “The Making of Andor Season 1 panel” and will watch the other Andor related interview later.

Those Narkina 5 cosplayers look like they had a blast!

It’d be cool if the “Andor, the Empire and a History of Resistance” panel is on the official YouTube live stream tomorrow.

They didn’t show that Andor panel. Instead they showed Anthony Daniels go through some painful banter and “funny” interview with someone from The Star Wars Show.

There was a 15 minute interview with Andy Serkis, but that was all of the Andor content shown live today:

I put the Live Celebration video on YouTube and as soon as I saw it was the Anthony Daniels & Anthony Carboni act I turned it off. So disappointing. I’ll watch that Andy Serkis interview later.

No. They are not showing the “Behind the Magic: The Special Visual Effects of Andor” panel on the live stream.

The “Jedi: Survivor” game panel is being shown instead: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hil5cr-tLxY Ugh.

That sucks.

I hope they’ll still put any of the “Behind The Magic” VFX scenes up on the ILM YouTube channel soon, like they have done for all their other recent projects: https://www.youtube.com/@ILMVFX/videos

What a great fan project and idea. Very cool. It even has the old style text and feel of the pages, the Index, and overall format and layout. And very kind of Josh Clarke/TinyWoodsman that it is also free for everyone too.

This is so cool! Honestly Star Wars is such a fun setting for table top. I wonder if there are more source books for this system?

For a moment there, I was concerned they’d cancelled the show full stop.

Guess it’ll take extra time to shoot next season, finding a suitable new location or *shudder* going bluescreen.

I have every bit of confidence in the writing team on Andor to handle the situation. I wish I could say that for any other SW show.
