4k77 - shot by shot color grading (a WIP)

Author

This thread will serve as the vehicle for updates and feedback concerning the shot by shot color grading of the 4k77 scan. The goal is to obtain a color grading that is consistent from shot to shot, but still adheres closely to the look and feel of a projected technicolor print. Please share your thoughts. As always this will be a community effort, so each opinion matters.

So, here is a set of completed shots:

More will follow…

My opinion this is the best of the bunch of stills that you have posted yet.

Although I would use the darkened corridor Leia gives the plans shot. Similar to the SS release.

Experimental Hue shifting…

Total Hue shifted by +7 and mids balanced only… Could the whole film be in the wrong hue?

Actually the hues are all over the shop. So yeah that is in my opinion the main problem really with it no idea how and why hues fluctuate? But this is one of those films.

What makes you think that? That change perhaps bleached the walls a little more, but the characters’ face look a bit lifeless as well.

Well I kind of believe that this film is in the wrong hue and consistently shifting about in hue. So I am just wondering if there is a magic amount of Hue to bring it all together.

yeah I am just thinking about a variant that stops that pink face stuff though. It was an experiment and if you look at captain antilles jacket now looks proper tan. and the walls are whiter yes the storm troopers are whiter.

Perhaps I over did it. But I think there might be something in it. If you look at picture 9 (going left to right) Dr Dre’s version matches my version picture 13 more or less. Sot it is shifting about all over the place.

The pink flesh tones look good. The actors look unhealthy in your hue shifts. 😃

It looks like you based it on the one particularly rosey faced man. He has probably received more attention on OT than any other character, but yes, he’s a bit red usually. But in doing so, everyone else in yours went from normal to liver failure. 😃

LOl yep I think you hit the nail on the head… I am so fed up with rosy cheeks 😃

Right let’s look at flesh.

70’s Flesh?

While he’s obviously not rosey like the one man, he certainly has a lot more color in his skin than the other desatuurated guys in your images. I just think much, much, much less attention here should be going to that one soldier in general. He’s an outlier, and I think it’s funny how commonly people focus on him and even adjust their overall grading because of him!

I think another thing that happens is that people, in various projects here, tend to want to desaturate the whole Tantive scene more than is really necessary. Perhaps this is a response to how ugly the BD is. But I certainly went too far with 2.7 in the exact same way. It shouldn’t be so sterile.

I really like something about this though…

I know it’s not totally right but I just want to put this guy to bed frankly. I think he is just so odd one out.

Here’s a sample frame at 1080p:

Yeah, another vote for the DrDre timings, they look pretty spot on to me.

This is a great thread, Dre, and I’m really looking forward to your Regrades…as always! Your progress really looks nice already.

Is there a way that you can put the Rebel Soldier Closeup from Neverar’s Technicolor version right along side of your edit? I’m at work right now, and don’t have that compatibility, but I’d like to compare the two, side by side, maybe even put the Raw 4k77 in there, perhaps, as I found his version to have exceptionally good colors in the Tantive IV scene.

That’s gotta be from 2.7 right? I remember his technicolor grade to be a bit warmer.

Compared to the Blu-ray, my version is significantly brighter and warmer, an interpretation of the Tech film as it was captured in the neutral light of the scan. Dre’s version is closer to a 70’s projection.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

1080 downscale from the first version of 4K77 I downloaded.

Redfaced Guy!

I think this is the final grade I’m going to use for my ‘Player Friendly’ DNR version,
Encoded to a x264 8 bit .mkv, just to create a copy that will play in most anything.

I thought I recognized your foul stench when I entered this forum!

Very interesting.

I really like your Tech Version, NeverarGreat…especially the Gamma/Brightness/Contrast settings, but the colors are Very nice as well. IMHO, if Dre can match those settings,(GBC) that would be Spot On!

I was already excited for 4k77 but this looks amazing!! Will you be doing the same regrade for the DNR version when it comes out?

Thanks! I might, although it might actually be easier to apply DNR to the color graded version.

No, that’s Neverar’s v1. For anyone interested in the differences in our color gradings, here are comparisons for the two sets of shots of the bluray regraded:

Hard to say the one I prefer, as the both look great ! Good job again Neverar and good luck Dr Dre for finishing the film. 😃
