I guess he doesn't think I'd buy a tv.
New steelbook versions of the currently existing blu-rays will be released this year. No new content it seems. Unaltered 4K dreams will remain just that this year.

Yawn.
Very mildly interesting that each case has the 20th Century Fox logo on it, rather than just ANH.
Edit: Regularly mildly interesting that they have decided to drop "Episode _" as a main part of the title. Consistent with what they're doing with TFA.
I find nothing even "mildly interesting" about this ill-conceived, aesthetically offensive double-dip of rancidness.

If people decide to double dip and buy a bunch of easily scratched aluminum cased discs for probably twice what they paid last time, they've really got no one to blame but themselves.
They would have the Fox logos because Fox still owns the physical distribution of all the movies (except the original) until 2020. They released the digital rights early to the sequels/prequels, which have the Disney branding.
So these are going to be the exact same discs as before, with the Fox logo and everything.

Let's see how well this sells. Are steelbooks really going to make people rebuy 6 movies?
Most people no but Star Wars does have an usually high number of MUST-OWN-THEM-ALL fans.
If they are going to rerelease the movies again, at least give us the originals. Even the GOUT could do that.
Who wants to guess that the artwork sucks? "Star Wars" and "terrible" are the peanut butter and chocolate of our time.
There's only one Blu Ray I'm buying on Oct. 13th...
Where were you in '77?
Even then, no, MANOS without at least a Rifftrax commentary track included just isn't worth watching (the sad part is, there exists a riff script for the full length MANOS, it would have been simple for them to team up and make a commentary track). It is a wasted effort, much like making a steel book of only butchered versions of Star Wars films and including 83.333% villain cover art (85.7% if you count the slip case).
I still think it's downright bizarre that the digital versions have inconsistent logos, regardless of who technically owns what.
Anyway, raced over here after reading the steelbook story on Slashfilm. Very dissapointed to see that the films are finally being released individually for reasons having nothing to do with what I've been wanting for years now.
The milking of decade-old transfers continues.
The only good news here, I guess, is that the complete nine-disc saga set will still be out there for people who want those three discs of extras. I still can't be bothered to pay good money just for some deleted scenes, though.
In the meantime, there's still this mysterious 4k remaster by Reliance MediaWorks that we've known about for over a year now, a.k.a. the reason this thread exists. The rumor this past April from someone who'd allegedly seen an in-progress version is that it's a newer SE, but one where Han shoots first again. Could this maybe be the "Final Cut" equivalent for the OT?
Obviously none of this matters in the long run if it doesn't bring the unaltereds closer to the proper treatment.
There are so many things to consider regarding if/when it'll actually happen, from the aforementioned 2020 expiration date for Fox's ownership of Empire/Jedi/PT, to the upcoming UHD blu-ray format, to the 40th anniversary coinciding with Ep8's release.
I'd like to think JJ Abrams and especially Rian Johnson have bothered Disney about getting the unaltereds restored. I'd hate to believe that rumor about Fox not wanting the unaltereds re-released until after Lucas passes on.
Rifftrax released their version already. And you're missing the point. ;)

I'm surprised they didn't use Boba Fett on the ESB cover.

That's the only thing that surprises you about this mess?

That there's no Fetts on the covers is the best part. What I'm absolutely baffled by is how in the world Grevious ended up on a cover.
Why the F are they rereleasing those shitty BDs again?
Rhetorical question, don't answer it.
I know it would have been stupid not to. I almost don't mind the individual steelbooks, as they haven't released the movies outside of their trilogies yet. But rereleasing the same exact 9 disc set is sort of a just an f you. WHY? Then I read that they were changing the cover art, and I thought, oh sure to remove "the complete saga." But NOPE. It's still there. One of the more idiotic things I've seen today.
It's not that I was hoping for an unaltered release, because I lost hope that that would happen this year when it wasn't announced at Celebration (and when Kathleen Kennedy cryptically said that there are some things she knows the fans want that they can't do right now). I still believe our best bet for the unaltered release is 2017 (40th Anniversary and Episode VIII).
^ What did KK say?
Yeah I'd also like to get an exact quote, as this is the first I've heard of her saying this (even cryptically).
Was it in regards to someone asking about the original versions?
Agreed. I'd like to hear more details about Kennedy's comment.
Not that it makes any difference, but if they were going for a villain on each Blu-ray cover, it should have gone:
Maul
Dooku
Grevious
Tarkin
Vader
Emperor
Boba Fett had even less of a role than Grevious in Empire, so it doesn't make any sense to put him on the cover. (If you did, however, you should put him on Empire then replace Grevious with Vader)
You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

Interestingly, 5 of the cover characters are villains. I guess the villains make more money?

The colars aren't fixed.
...
Oh wait, you weren't talking about kenkraly.
It's worth noting that the covers for ANH and Empire echo those of the 1995 Faces/THX/OneLastTime release.
They used the Emperor instead of Yoda for RotJ. They probably thought Yoda was a better fit for AotC because his lightsaber fight with Dooku is generally considered to be the standout scene of that movie.
