I've been working on a 4K restoration of Star Wars from a number of 16-bit 4K Technicolor film scans for many years.  There is a Vimeo channel for it with lots of before/afters, and comparisons with the current incarnation and clips from Reliance MediaWorks showreel, etc.  I've been fortunate to have several members of the original VFX crew consulting.  If you'd like to check it out, here is the link:

I really should wait for TV's Frink to reply to this, but oh well...

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

Don't worry, bumping one of the worst threads we have to tell us something we're well aware of has pretty much left me speechless.

Meh, we all are at times.

FWIW, there's at least one other 4K 35mm IB Technicolor scan restoration being worked on currently.

There's also Team-1's project which, IIRC, is based off of a 2K scan of a 35mm Spanish LPP dupe print.

I'm loving his restoration videos on Vimeo.  Does anyone know if he has plans to restore ESB or ROTJ... assuming he has access to prints?

You could probably ask him that in his thread.

I didn't know he had one.  Thanks.

I thought we covered that earlier on this page...

He also only says that it has the original Han and Greedo scene, making no mention of anything else.

Interestingly, he also said that new 'colour-timing' was supposedly among the other small tweaks and changes to the (possibly 4k) ANH version his source saw.

I'd like to think this might be an improvement over the darkened, black-crushed look which the SE brought, but it could turn out that some kind of even worse 'tinting' has been introduced now...

However, if the 4k version still includes the awful 'Han standing on CGI Jabba's tail' scene (which also ruins the later 'first reveal of the Falcon' scene), then restoring the original Han shooting Greedo editing will only mildly improve things overall.

New SE is a very bad thing unless the OOT comes along with it. And I feel like it won't. If what these people are saying is true and there is a new 4K master with some new changes including a new color timing, I have an itching feeling they're talking about the Reliance master (and, by the way, the colors are very effed in that just in different ways than the blu-ray). And since we've already heard about that, but we've heard jack shit about the OOT, I think it's safe to say that the OOT will not likely come with a new SE if that happens.

We haven't heard jack shit confirmed for OOT *or* new SE aside from one guy who believed that Han shoots "first" in some mystery version a mystery friend of his watched.

I don't know why it took till just now for me to realize that the added Jabba scene does indeed ruin the Millennium Falcon reveal.  I guess I don't look at Star Wars with fresh eyes anymore, but that really would spoil things for a new viewer.  It adds yet another layer of terrible to this entire Special Edition farce.

It ruins the Falcon reveal, it ruins the intro of Boba Fett in the next film, and it ruins the reveal of Jabba two films later.

As long as we continue to have to live with this scene as an integral part of the "official" versions, instead of as the mildly interesting deleted scene that it once was and still ought to be, then I suggest they go whole hog and insert even more future-reveal-ruining characters for Han to re-relay the same exact information that was already established in the Greedo scene...

"Look, Yoda, even I get boarded sometimes. You think I had a choice?"

"Look, Palpatine, even I get boarded sometimes. You think I had a choice?"

"Look, Rancor, even I get boarded sometimes. You think I had a choice?"

"Look, Kylo, even I get boarded sometimes. You think I had a choice?"

"These deadly rays will be your death..."

I really want a conversation between Han and the rancor now.

This is the forerunning hypothesis, by a mile.  Especially since the Reliance transfer would presumably have "Han shooting first" just because it would be scanned from physical elements, rather than the electronic house of horrors where Rubberhan resides.

(and, by the way, the colors are very effed in that just in different ways than the blu-ray).

 How so?
