Anyhow, the original point was that the X0 team should get the Star Wars trilogy in HD from Cinemax so they can have superb source material to work with for restoration purposes of the unaltered original trilogy. =)
Im sure the X0 team members know all about what sources are available to them.....

I imagine they do, but when something this good comes along, it's hard not to emphasize the importance of it.

The Star Wars trilogy. There can be only one.

I'm sure someone will record it. It won't be a good reference at all though for a proper restoration like this. The X0 team is only using pre '97 elements. The 2004 dvd colors however, are so screwed up that they cannot be completely undone. Many of the details in black areas such as Vader's cape are now all completely black, for example. Scenes are so dark that boosting them would be like trying to fix a picture that needed more of a flash. People's faces will be grayed out after brightening. The special collection and definitive collection give much more to work with.
I'm wondering how the scene with the orange blob under the landspeeder will be dealt with. I know the DC is no good because of all the smearing but I'm pretty sure a lot of the scratches and noise was already there in '77 in the master print (due to all the optical compositing).

We have him chained to a computer in the X0 Dungeon.

I was almost right! I'd imagined Zion had him locked up in his basement...

It's dark, I can barely see Zion....he's saying something to MeBeJedi......

"It rubs the lotion on it's skin - Or else it gets the hose again"

Glad to hear he's OK.....

Maybe they objected to your misuse of "it's"...?

I got your reference, and I chuckled -- but only to myself.

There there vbangle. It was amusing.
Maybe most people didn't get it, after all it wasn't a Star Wars reference.

As for my post on the previous page about the scene with the landspeeder. I don't have the TC print, but I must say again how clear a few uncompressed screenshots looked posted here a while ago.
Here's the scene I'm talking about. This is from the "Gout" dvd.

Coincidentally I am working on that most wretched of shots right now, (which is why I posted that image in the other thread).

First thing is to reinstate the invisible man, fix the man with disappearing legs and get rid of the motion trails and DVR mess, then I can worry about the landspeeder.

It is a conundrum, do you try to minimise the pink vas-o-cam effect under the speeder or just leave it as is (but fix the rest of the shot to remove the DVNR mess).

As with most things on the project choosing one over the other would upset half of the community....

So at the moment I am thinking both, but it is the toughest scene so far, it is a real mess. (The only reason it didn't make people eject their copy of the GOUT and frisbee it at GL's head is that the camera is in motion the entire shot. So although it is the worst shot in the trilogy it may not be noticed by the casual viewer, but it is a shameful example of the shortcomings of the GOUT)

I have always understood there would be a "no fixes" edition first, so I guess that means retaining the vas-o-cam for now.

Well it means is we are trying to restore the shot to its original state, so vasocam will be retained for the archives.

I'm also having a look at what some minimal colour correction can do to minimise the effect and clean it up in an unobtrusive way for my own version.

Doesn't the special collection have that shot in good quality?

Well not really, it is better, no DVNR to content with but is as noisy as hell - it is taking a lot of work to restore it.

I'm sure you've noticed this but the guy whose legs get eaten up by the DVNR is in the background of almost every shot in this sequence. As the Indexed trilogy site mentioned, where is the action figure?
I've heard the PAL THX versions don't have smearing. I wonder what this shot looked like for those. The other thing is the THX versions have much reduced color and contrast to hide the video noise. The orange blur is much more noticeable pre THX.
Are you trying to erase the ghosting from the DC or remove the scratches from the SC? With the "Gout" dvd's, It's become a lot easier to see the ghosting. It's in a LOT of scenes. I'm now starting to wonder if the SC shots will be needed for at least half the shots.
Personally, I think the orange blur has to stay intact in it's full "glory" but I can't wait to see it with a pristine background.

Not true; the PAL THX versions have been through the same DVNR process.

I think that was an IVTC or pulldown error or something.
