Okay.....

You asked if we would use SE footage in the project. I said we weren't because that wasn't the intention of this project. It has nothing to do with legality. I don't know how to be any clearer than that.

We're just not big on the SE on principle, and correcting the DC scenes to be accurate amongst themselves (frame-by-frame and scene-by-scene) will be time consuming enough in and of itself. Doing so between different releases/transfers is just a whole 'nother headache that we don't want to consider right now.

I agree, however it's almost like someone is trying to give the X0 project a bad name....

I should probably take a look at the actual footage before I comment, but why would this give the Project a bad name?

Judging by the specs and its unknown provenance, I don't think there's a person here at OT.com that would figure this post would be anything at all like the final release. Anybody judging a full-on DVD project on the basis of a one-CD DivX encode -- from a "real" source or not -- would be seriously jumping the gun. (Unless it's really fantastic, I guess?)

What really interests me is the "timecode print" part. I want to know more about that! I've been collecting up sources and finished preservation projects for a long time, and I've never even heard of (let alone seen) any with timecode. I'm assuming (hoping!) this would be SMPTE-style code, labelling every single frame. It would sorta suck if this were just a to-the-nearest-second sort of VCR counter thing. But even the VCR-type thing could be something in the style of Wookie Groomer's split screen version -- something that maybe isn't meant to be watched as entertainment, but rather appreciated as big-time Star Wars scholarship.

I hope someone can post some screen caps sooner rather than later...

The timecode print was described in newsletter #2.

I think it's good that this is being shared, now everyone has a common reference point for the movie. This will help in discussing defects, differences between sources, audio synchronization projects, etc.

I figured you guys wouldn't be using the SE laserdiscs but I'm curious if anyone knows how they (at least the unaltered shots) match up. Specifically I'd love to find a comparison of in the desert with the droids and Luke and Owen puchasing the droids. Those shots looked the most deteriorated before '97. The other thing that would be interesting to compare is the shot of 3PO following the binary sunset where he begs not to be deactivated. It looks like a very poor contrast ratio. Isn't there a good ld>dvd transfer? It would be nice to have in the screenshots comparison.
Were any THX processes like dirt concealment used for the '97 laserdiscs?

Like the newsletter states, we created our timecode print as a reference so that we could keep on the same page with each other on whatever we were doing in the project. It has been an incredibly awesome tool for comparing different captures and sources of the films. You guys are spot on about it's usefulness.

But I can't see how this upload could be our TC print. Very few people ever saw it - probably no one outside our group ever did. I'm not able to get on newsgroups at the moment since my Giganews limit has been exceeded for the month, so if anyone could post some screenshots I'd appreciate it.

Well, have to admit I went ahead and downloaded this and I guess it won't give the X0 team a bad name....

if anything the 700mb small divx looks very good for what it is and makes me drool for the real thing....

I just hope that this doesn't change anything and MeBeJedi and Zion continue their hard work.....

Giddy up! Any judgement of video quality aside, the timecode is SMPTE-style, and therefore looks like it can be very useful in referencing individual frames of the film!

Whether this is X0 Project official stuff or not (and I'd have to imagine that somehow it is??) this looks to be a great, great tool for hardcore preservationists!

I don't believe this. It does look like ours. I can't say for sure until I watch it. But what I'm seeing is something either someone else took a lot of time to replicate, or found a way to steal from us.

All things aside, this doesn't change our focus or determination to finish our project. If nothing else, perhaps other preservationists and fan editors will find it a useful tool in their own projects.

Even if it was ours (I'm in no mood to download a 700MB(?) file which is probably bogus), I don't think our timecoded version had any corrections, anyways. Worst case, it's a low-res, downconverted, uncorrected DivX version with timecode. Good luck making a decent transfer from that. LOL!

Personally, I know I was rather distracted watching the "timecoded" release of ROTS, and that was nowhere near as bad as this, so I won't lose sleep over it.

Must be. I wouldn't know how the hell this could happen anyway else. Can't imagine one of the X0'ers accidentally put those files in a shared folder.

I would think the "title" color bars would be the give-away - I've not seen that posted in any of your stuff so far. If that's what the title screen looks like, it looks like someone got a copy - but how? Kind of creepy.

Ehh.. indeed, the quality is pretty bad. Lot of compression and the downscaling hasn't helped either. Dammit! Thought I'd get me a nice peak behind the scenes. Let's hope he uploads the DVD sometime soon

No without kidding, you can just make out that the transfer was pretty sharp, but probably TR-47 looks the same downscaled like this. Doesn't reveal anything we didn't know yet.
