So it may happen that all SW preservation threads are closed. I stress the word may because nothing has been 100% decided yet. Jay, Moth3r and I still need to come to a conclusion on what to do.

You are correct though, the X0 Project will live on past just the laserdisc transfering of the Star Wars films. What we do next is still up in the air, and it certainly should be allowed to be discussed here.

If you don't mind a newbie's input on this matter, could I suggest that since Lucas' DVD's will be non-anamorphic, that preservation threads regarding anamorphic transfers be kept open. We do have the movies on DVD...but they're certainly not being treated with the same amount of care as a preservation DVD like many people here are trying to make. (Anyway...sorry to go off topic, just wanted to share my view.)
Forever a Star Wars fan!

Hey everybody, sorry I've been gone for a while - I've been out of town without a constant internet connection since November.

I have to say that the past month has been a real rollercoaster regarding the website. I, for one, am secretly happy that this community still has a purpose and that my previous investment in the X0 project (and subsequent investments as well ) will not have been wasted.

George Lucas is still the revisionist hack he's been since Return of the Jedi, and it takes a voice like ours to put his wrongs right.

In any case, x0 project... not to keep repeating rhetoric, but keep up the good work.

Sorry for the lack of updates. We are working hard on the project right now.

MeBe sent me a couple videos that I should have put up a long time ago, but never got around to it.

The first video is called "6 seconds". It's basically an expanded view of the cleanup process, showcasing the time and effort it takes to clean up a 6 second clip of footage. The second video, called "flyover" is a quick before/after look at a very dirty shot from ANH.

I will try and get these up this week.

Will the X0 team release a bonus disc for this set, featuring your making of stuff? I think that would be kind of neat, if it wouldn't take much extra time.

Also, will you do any sort of overlaying audio commentary on your restoration work?

Sounds like the X0 Project is coming along nicely if we are getting close to a release date. I don't mean to ask questions that have been asked to death, and so if I am, I'm sorry and let me know, but is there any plans to include the mono sound mix and/or isolated score?

Thanks Zion.
A belated thank you to all of the X0 team for never missing a beat with the project in spite of the official DVD announcement.

These are old clean-ups, but lately I've also been juggling putting 2600 square feet of sod (tomorrow and Friday) as well as finishing my church's Father's Day video. Not to mention my second computer wiped its damn partition AGAIN!

Zion, how's the update to the website going? Do you have a estimate of when you might be able to put up the latest vids?

I swear the X0 project is like one of my major vices.....and I need a fix.....help me please!

Many thanks for putting this up, Zion, and thanks for a high quality DivX encode.

I believe this is the first time that actual moving video from the X0 capture has been seen by those outside the project?

I was impressed with the absence of noise in the X0 capture. I remember Laserman explaining the build quality of the player minimises analogue video noise, and that is clearly the case in this clip.

Unfortunately the aspect ratio of the video is off, it seems that the vertical resolution has been compressed when it should have been stretched. (Or was that just so that the before and after could be shown in the splitscreen arrangement?)

Well done with the clean up process.

However, it is interesting to compare the "before" shot against a capture from the French laserdiscs. A few of the speckles appear in the same frames in both transfers. The PAL version has one large orange blob that the NTSC version doesn't have. On the whole, however, this shot is much cleaner on the PAL disc.

I would love to know the history behind the creation of the laserdisc masters. I hope that the PAL master - which seems to be superior apart from the horrible burn marks in the Tantive corridor - is going to be used for the new PAL DVDs.

^^^ Thank you.

"Which laserdisk was used for that shot. The uncorrected color looked worse than the THX versions."

For one of these, I think I used my original capture as a comparison. It's been awhile. I'll have to double-check.

"Unfortunately the aspect ratio of the video is off, it seems that the vertical resolution has been compressed when it should have been stretched. (Or was that just so that the before and after could be shown in the splitscreen arrangement?)"

Correct on the last statement. I tried to make both scenes as visible as possible. Many of the "fixes" I've made are very, very tiny, and are lost in the detail due to 1) being reframed to a smaller size, and 2) by virtue of the DivX codec. In the Flyover scene, most of the dropouts on on the planet surface, but you really have to look to see them. I'm probably far more meticulous about them than I need to be (after a first run in Combustion, I review the video in VirtualDub, which makes these glitches stand out even more), but if I can see them, then I delete them.

The opening logo was a kick. I love what you did with Coov's design.
