I just emailed you Citizen.

Let me just say, I am VERY impressed.

I finally got around to watching Citizen's discs on my home theater (119" screen / 720p Infocus 7200 FP / 7.1 / scaler, etc).

In my opinion, this is the best set released so far. The video quality is incredible and the audio is also top notch. I still prefer the 2.0 mix and then I let me receiver convert it to 7.1

There is a small difference in detail between the single and dual layered disc but it's not that noticeable unless your display is greather than 100"....even then the single version is still VERY nice.

Awesome job Citizen! I am really looking forward to TESB and ROTJ.

Your DVDs will be the only way I watch Star Wars from now on.

For kicks and grins I put in my old Dr. Gonzo set to compare as well.

NO COMPARISON. Your version rocks!

Doctor M's is probably second best now and his is still very good.

Let me know if you want more details. I plan on watching more later this week.

Thanks for the report I knew you'd be able to tell the difference between the dual layer and single layer versions on your big screen setup for the fact that the mpeg2 video on the single layer version is 3.46gb whilst on the dual layer version it's 5.98gb. Did you find the two 'hidden' buttons in the menus of the dual layer version? don't tell where they are yet before others have had the chance to find them because you're the first to get an NTSC copy.

I've just this evening finished the dual layer PAL version of ANH and will be posting a copy out to segaflip tomorrow, menu/chapter/video/content wise it's pratically identical to the NTSC version.

But there's a small dilemma, do I send him the single layer PAL & NTSC versions of ANH too? I did them because it was very easy to do and copying them is quick, cheap and easy unlike dual layer discs that take and age to burn and cost a bomb (and can really make you swear when they coaster), it'll be a total of 72gb for the single layer & dual layer of the PAL & NTSC trilogy.

dark_jedi, I haven't done ESB or ROTJ yet, about to start on ESB very soon as I've now completed all the versions of ANH.

Keep an eye on this thread: ***Citizen's NTSC DVD/PAL DVD/XviD Info and Feedback Thread*** as I update it as things are finished.

My burner doesn't like burning dual-layer discs and haven't had a successful burn yet (hence my making the single layer ones so I can watch them), to get the dual layer version out I've rar'd up ISO onto two discs for whoever receives them to roll-their-own copy. See my sig and drop me a line about aquisitions.

segaflip, in the post to you right now are a 4 flavours of ANH; NTSC dual layer ISO on 2 discs, NTSC single layer, PAL dual layer ISO on 2 discs, PAL single layer. The NTSC dual layer ISO was posted last Friday with a failed dual layer burn so you can see the quality (playback sutters at the beginning of the 2nd layer), the others 3 were sent today.

*clears off finished ANH material from harddrives to begin work on ESB*

When I've completed the trilogy I will probably ask help for getting a PAL dual layer set of my own, I burnt a PAL dual layer ANH disc last night and predictably it failed verify when it got to the 2nd layer, the resulting burn in my DVD player stuttered a bit when it got a few mins into playing the 2nd layer but not during the layer change. I have 3 blank dual layer discs left and won't try burning them on my Pioneer 108 as they'll just fail again.

Citizen, I'd like to include screenshots of your transfer on my comparison page. The dual layer NTSC version would probably be the best to take the stills from, although I imagine any differences between versions would be negligble on a jpeg. Any chance you, or someone else, could do some shots for me please?

Moth3r, drop me a line with your address and I'll post you the NTSC single layer ANH (and PAL if you want, but you probably wouldn't like the audio pitch increase ), it's probably best you do the capping/resizing to keep things consistant, I don't think you'd see any real difference between single & dual versions if you're compressing the still to jpeg.

Hey got the DL discs just now, was wondering if you know about what time does the layer change happen? Just would like to skip to that for now, and few it.

About 1h 10m:
PAL ANH layer change occurs at the beginning of the scene where the guard in the holding cells says "Where are you taking this...thing"
NTSC ANH layer change occurs at the beginning of the scene where the guard in the holding cells says "I wasn't notified, I'll have to clear it"

I'll update my info/feedback thread with that info.

oh yeah I found it, that is not normal on your failed burn that you sent me. Should clear right up once I make room for the iso and and hopefully get a good burn. By the way DAMN!!! Great transfer!!

Yup, best transfer for sure. I watched it all last night on my theater and was thrilled at the quality.

FINALLY!!!!!!! A very nice original version of ANH on DVD! No complaints here.

Now, I am trying to create an ISO of the DL disk but it fails everytime. DVDdecriptor can not make an ISO or anything else from this disc.

Any ideas?

Thanks again Citizen.

Now hurry up with TESB!

Thanks, you can see why I spent so much time doing the 5 times capture & merge method to get the cleanest capture possible with the hardware I have, I got the idea from reading up about the X0 player, how it has 5 NTSC processors and merges the output to reduce RF inteference.

My burner can't successfully do dual layers as I found out much to my annoyance (and wallet), what I sent you was the best burn out of 6 discs and even that failed on verify after burning with DVDDecrypter
Any ideas?

Ask segaflip for a copy of two discs containing the NTSC dual layer ISO I sent him? they'll get there much quicker than if I send you them.

Thanks for the kind offer, but I've downloaded the NTSC DL version off the newsgroup. (Even though I don't have a DL burner...)

I've the first two shots up now, I'll finish off the set later on tonight.

Now, to get Dark_Jedi's Japanese transfer...

Citizen,

you talked in the Dark/Sega thread and your own feedback thread about maybe doing a new transfer from the Japanese Special Collection set, as you dislike the temporal smoothing applied to later sets. Given that you're based in the UK and have had great results with your PAL transfer, wouldn't it make sense to look into a pre-Definitive Collection PAL set like this one?

Yes it'd make perfect sense, I'm not totally clued up on the available SW LDs floating about so thanks for the heads up on the pre-1995 French widescreen LDs, I'm still in the middle of my trilogy transfer and at this point it's all speculation and just looking at the idea of doing a transfer from non-temporal discs, any and all information is useful.

According to a comment at LDDb.com,
This LD has a poor image quality, due to a very bad pressing from PDO UK (a lot of video scratches on the picture).
It would be interesting to investigate, though.
