The Stormtrooper shot looks much improved. None of the others really bothered me enough for me to notice a difference.

Magnetic power of some kind.

Again, use your imagination people! This is not Star Trek, were everything have to be explained on screen with lousy concepts. This is Star Wars, were the lousy concepts are the ones the fans should bring during discussions with their friends! Anyone have the right to not like the look of that droid. But saying that you "hate" a 3 seconds video clips of that cute little droid because you don't understand how its head stands on its body... Come on. Maybe it will be your favorite character in the end! ;)

This. Although I'm not a fan of the droid, I don't hate it. Many, many aspects of the OT didn't, and don't make sense. Yet when similar things pop up in newer films, they're criticized and torn to bits. I think Ray has the right to his opinion, and I'm not criticizing him for it, but complaining about technological aspects of the movie (as distinct from story, which does need to make sense) when the OT was plagued with things that didn't make sense is silly, if you think the OT was amazing at the same time. It's hard to make sequels to classic movies and make them good enough for people to be happy with them, so don't be too picky or you'll end up with negative feelings about the trilogy for sure.

There are things in the OT that don't make scientific sense, but it all makes visual sense. There's nothing in the OT that needs to be explained because you see it you just understand.
I guess this could fall into the same category to some, but it just looks silly to me.
Why does it need an R2D2 head on top?

The TIE Fighters look too similar to what we saw in the OT, but I can't say I got a very good look at them. Hopefully these aren't new fighters they're still making the same way as 30 years ago.

Because nobody would ever still be flying a 40 year old design...

Or a 60 year old one. ;)

Those are old planes, though, right? Not new planes copying old designs? I'm just hoping that they're either improved, or old TIEs. Perhaps the Empire is in the position the Rebels were in the OT and are stuck using old ships. I just don't want the designs faithfully copied for nostalgia's sake when they're supposed to be new. I want them to be updated like those X-Wings, or be old like the original X-Wings were supposed to be.

The point I'm trying to make is that the TIE is a successful design. Like a B-1 or a B-52, you can upgrade the electronics in the cockpit, and even the engines, and it's probably going to look pretty much the same on the outside.

It's also possible the tables have turned enough that what's left of the Empire is the side having to keep old ships going now. They probably have more spare parts handy than the Rebellion did though.

^^ it "needs" an R2 head on top because it is an R2 unit. It just uses it's spherical body to move instead of legs with wheels.

Like I said earlier, there's nothing "incredible" about the droid. The head stays on top because it was designed to do so. The ball rolls forward and the head glides backwards on the surface of the ball the same distance (or the head spins the ball or whatever). It doesn't need wires to transmit commands from the head to the body/ball.

Truth is often stranger than fiction, now THIS is weird:

Judging from ROTJ, it seems that even at that time TIE Fighters were being replaced by TIE Interceptors.

And TIE Interceptors are way cooler! I hope we see more fighters like that, and a greater variety, or at least more advanced TIEs. TIEs don't seem to have a particularly great design. It's easy to shoot them down with such huge wings. One would expect them to be slimmed down a little in later models, which is why I'm hoping they're either old, or they're new in a way I couldn't see in that quick shot.

Am I alone in thinking the droid was one of the highlights?

I think so. Is it because you thought the rest sucked, or because you really liked the droid? I liked that the droid really felt like it belonged in Star Wars, even if was a little weird. But since I like originality, I can't complain. The droid looks like it has an efficient design, assuming the technology is available to make its head stay on easily.

It's been speculated over the years that TIE's are pretty much flying cannon fodder. Cheap, and easy to produce in massive numbers to overwhelm an enemy. They don't even have ejection seats. And unlike X-Wings, they can't operate far from a base or mother ship.

I don't know if this has been brought up or not, but the theme at the end when it shows the title card seems exceptionally bass heavy. I mean, this thing rattled my sub. I checked it against the 2013 RotS DVD, and it's nowhere near this level. Is the Blu Ray mixed like this too?

It's just hard to imagine what sort of tasks are suited to such an unusual looking droid. And some of us still have the lingering hangover of silly droids in the prequels, and the SE's. Not to mention Artoo flying, and being all CGI in shots that could have been done with the real prop.

I want to see more of Happy Fun Ball in action first. Might even be a minor character that ultimately proves the classic Astromech design is still the best. ;)

Well, to me the ball-droid shot did look and feel like it could have been plucked right out of ANH  but not the original SW, it looked and felt a lot like the ANH SE Mos Eisley additions.

Part of the problem with the ANH SE Mos Eisley additions were that they didn't fit the scenes or the movie.  We don't know yet if this shot fits.

FYI, it feels far more epic and fantastic in a theater.  I took a train out to Boston for the first showing yesterday, and there was definitely a larger than normal crowd for a Hunger Games showing at 10 AM on a Friday, haha!  I even jokingly called out, "So everyone's here for Hunger Games, right?", and most of the audience laughed.  Rest assured, I was not the only person gasping in anxiousness anytime a trailer started that wasn't TFA (naturally, it was the last one), and I was not the only person in the slightest to leave after the trailer premiered.  Strangely, I was the only person to stick around and catch it two more times in two other auditoriums, so I guess I'm the only person in all of New England to have seen the first three theatrical showings of the new Star Wars trailer.

Anyway, not only is there a great thrill in seeing it with a crowd, but seeing it in a full HD presentation on a giant screen with big sound makes it truly feel like Star Wars.  Modern, yes, and with Abrams' touch, yes.  But the score, those sound effects, and the atmosphere as a whole, are meant for a theater.  Being inside that X-Wing with the pilot, soaring across that lake with the fighters, creeping through the woods with a new Dark Sider... December 2015 can't come soon enough!!!

First test at trying to reduce the teal-orange color grade and give it a slightly more OT look.  Still needs some work though.

JEDIT: As always, Youtube manages to ruin the video with bad compression.

Night and day! I actually got excited watching it this time. Now the only real complaint I have is that stupid saber. Fantastic work emanswfan!

The latter. Thinking about it, I guess the shape and some design elements remind me of a few favourite droids from my childhood. No one influence...

^ Zax (From 1983's 'Benji, Zax & the Alien Prince')

^ Sergeant Major Zero (From 1983's 'Terrahawks')

^ Blinky (From 1991's 'Bucky O'Hare and the Toad Wars')

^ T-Bob (From 1985's 'Mobile Armored Strike Kommand')*

...so for me at least, it feels like something that would have been around the same time as the OT.

(* Daaammmnn! I had totally forgotten about M.A.S.K. I had every toy from that show! These are the kind of fuzzy memories this droid brings back. No way does this looks like something from the PT.)

Watching it again, the droid has this little RC car aerial...

...that is wobbling and rotating around exactly like the aerials would when I ran my toy cars over some bumpy dirt tracks. It's a detail like that, that makes this special for me.

Maybe it's the sort of droid one gives to a child, and the character it belongs to has kept it around as a companion?

interesting.  im not good at spotting the whole teal/orange thing but this trailer it looks like the overall color is slightly dialed back.  I think the nighttime forest scene in the teaser was fine, and we dont know if the blue light with the stormtroopers was because it just had interior light thats blue.

But its nice to see that john boyega didnt crash land on a planet made out of Tang!!!BWAAAAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAAHHAHAHAAHAHAHHAHAHAAAAA

Color grading can be a great tool for fantasy movies, and all movies have some look that make it a product of its time due to technology and materials, but I dont want Star Wars to go on a bandwagon and take a look just because its trendy.

its funny cuz on thanksgiving I finally saw SW on Blu Ray at someones house and it looked ridiculous.  He is very knowledgeable about home theatre and had his tv calibrated.  Its a Mitsubishi DLP TV - and this was an underrated display technology that never caught on.  Anyway, even setting aside all cgi crap, the video quality left a lot to be desired.  There was one shot with C3PO walking in the desert and it was almost like he had a magnetic field and was repelling the film grain around him!!  another scene - obi-wan rescuing luke and he looked SO orange, John Boehner would have found it excessive.  I know there has been some debate regarding the color and contrast of that particular scene, but i dont ever remember obi-wan looking almost like a carrot.

again, i am not as good as others at noticing this stuff.  so when I can spot the ridiculous DNR on TPM and sub-par, oversaturated tiknering on SW, you know its bad.
