Wow. I haven't had a lot of time to catch up on all of the projects going on. I really like the sound of this one. I was curious about a couple of things.

1. I've heard some say the image is better on the Faces LD's and some say the image is better on the Definitive Collection LD's. Are there any comparison shots anywhere of the same frame or frames from each source?
2. Is the X0 better than the X99 because the X0 has a laser wavelength of 670nm and the X9 has a laser wavelength of 780nm?
3. I know MVerta is mixing sources from DVD and LD. I wonder how his project would look if his LD shots came from the X0 capture.
4. What capture card was used to capture the signal from the X0 to a PC? That may already have been asked and answered. Forgive me if it has. I just did a quick glance through the thread and didn't see it mentioned.

Anyway, I think this is an awesome project and I am definitely interested in it. I may even abandon my own project because I don't have the money to buy additional equipment right now.

Thanks.

Patrick

Well, I'm trying to donate to "the cause" but for some reason I can't seem to remember my paypal password. I've submitted to have it reset by paypal still has yet to e-mail me. Is the project accepting donations via check or credit card?

I don't think there are, yet. Keep in mind that both the DC and Faces come from the exact same telecine session, dust and all. So the only differences (if any) are in the disc mastering. There is really little between these two versions.

That might be one reason. But the X0 and X9 are very close in performance, and both blow away just about every other player out there. If you stick out your arm, you could imagine that your garden-variety Pioneer is about at your elbow, while the X0 and X9 are at the tips of your index and middle fingers. At that point, it really doesn't matter which of the two is 'best.'

Anyway, I think this is an awesome project and I am definitely interested in it. I may even abandon my own project because I don't have the money to buy additional equipment right now.

That was about my feeling exactly! Unless you've got several grand for an X0 or X9, plus another few hundred for decent capture cards and discs, you may as well support a project that already has just that.

As I've told a few other people via PM, don't give up your own project. You can learn some valuable stuff in the process, regardless of the quality. I still like to look at my previous version, even though it'll be sorely overshadowed by this new transfer.

Thanks for all of the info. I may continue with my project. It is just that I cannot offer much like other projects which have already been completed and especially those that are upcoming. I do want to complete mine in case it is the only one I can ever get. I have done it once, but I wasn't happy with the results. I used S-Video to capture and that introduced a lot of dot crawl in the reds which looks like the picture on the X0 site of the capture from the CLD-701.

Here is what I have so far:
Pioneer CLD-703
Definitive Collection LD's (2nd pressing that isn't missing Leia footage)
Leadtek WinFast TV 2000 XP Expert
Canopus ADVC-100
DVD-Lab
TMPGEnc Plus which supports dual layer
I also have the SE Widescreen VHS tapes. I only plan to use them to get the audio for the Snowspeeder spinning out of control and exploding. Wonder why none of the THX Remastered sources have that sound.

Here is what I plan on getting:
I do plan on getting a dual layer burner that does both + and - dual layer
DVD-Lab Pro

I may also get the Faces LD's someday.

Is there or is there going to be a list of all the hardware and software used? It would also be nice to have updates of changes to that list. For instance: "We were using TMPGEnc Plus, but have found that ProCoder is better for IVTC." Something like that.

So, I guess I will continue with my project, but I do plan to help out the X0 Project as well.

Well, I'm new here, but this seems like the site I've been secretly wanting for a long time.
After watching Episode III I realized I wanted to watch my old movies again, but of course, they're on VHS. Even worse than that is that I don't have access to a VCR (they're pretty much obsolete in Taiwan).

For me I have to say that the X0 transfer is the most exciting transfer around at the moment. I'm really into all the fan edits, but I also would want to get a copy of the faces THX edition on DVD (since that may actually be the version I watched more than any other during the drunken weekends of my college years).

So I guess I wanted to ask if, in addition to all the edited versions, one of the final results will be an unmodified, "perfect" copy of the Faces laserdiscs on DVD (I guess that means with the sound of Leia welding). Sorry if I sound like a total n00b, but I don't think it was clear to me in 8 pages of text.

The other thing I wanted to say is that I'll be making a contribution via Paypal when I change computers later. It won't be much, but I do want to show that I appreciate the efforts being made here.

Back in the early days of this thread Laserman mentioned doing something with a PAL 2950 and quality capture equipment.

Were any captures ever made and if so, how do they compare with the captures made from the X0?

(Capturing from a 2950 using a SweetSpot card - the name the PDI Deluxe is sold under in Europe - is something I'd like to try some day.)

From what I understand this whole project is being captured to HuffYUV lossless video and that, because of the minimal compression, storage space is becoming a factor. I was just reading about this new lossless video codec that supports multi-processor setups (unlike HuffYUV) so that it is faster on render machines and has higher compression than HuffYUV. I wasn't sure if you gents had heard of it, and as it sounds pretty good, so I thought that I would give it a mention here.

Lagarith Lossless Video Codec

Sorry if I'm repeating old information.

Greetings all you Star Wars fans! Recently I had the great fortune to come across a Laserdisc to DVD transfer of the original Star Wars Trilogy. It completely made my year to be able to watch them unaltered. (Cuz I'm sick of watching the old SE tapes - ugh...) Then I found this forum (from googling Twin Sister's 'Scoundrel' which is the easter egg that helped me identify my set) and life got even better! An entire commuity of Star Wars OT fans!! It's total heaven!! Anyways, I've been reading all these great threads and wanted to say that this is the coolest thing I've seen a group of people do in a very long time.

Anyways, I'm off to make my donation to the XO Project.

Can someone clue me in as to how this is actually going to be released? From what I understand, it will probably be like an AVI or something of the ilk...

Also, would I be correct to say that you'll be releasing the whole trilogy?

Thanks for all the hard work you've put in so far, and I'll try to get some money together for a worthy donation sometime soon...

Hooray, activity on X0 project. Well, since last time I posted, I got a real job and moved to another state. So I'll likely donate in the imaginable future. It is all worth it to get something that is better than these current dvds that are available. Especially since I recently found even MORE changes in the SE/DVD than I previously thought existed (mostly in the audio of Empire [not just that jango crap]). Seriously, keep up the great work.

I'm not sure where you got that from. It will be a standard (yet above average) DVD format.

Folks, don't be afraid to ask your questions in this thread, rather than PM.

"About the X0 transfer: are you guys planning on releasing "unmodified" DVDs of the original movies, in addition to your own individual mods/releases?"

Yes, there will be a couple of versions, including a straight transfer.

Are you working on all 3 movies at the same time or are you first finishing ANH before you start with Empire or Jedi?

They'll be worked on in order, but we haven't decided on a release schedule in that sense yet.

Is there anything else we can do to help further the cause - aside from $$$ donations? Spare hard drives, etc? (I'm a technology supervisor who could potentially 'misplace' a pair of 80gb drives for a little while, as long as they came back in a year or so)

Actually, that would be of immense help. I've had to offload so much crap from my drives lately (too many simultaneous AVI projects going on - I'm starting my own home video VHS to DVD company. ). Now that I have 3 DVD burners (two of them DL), it's gotten easier, but it's still tedious.

What state do you live in?

I live in PA. If you can cover shipping I'll send you 2 80GB drives, if you're sure you can get them back to me in a year or so... : )

Given the amount of expectation surrounding the eventual XO releases, how about some kind of release party? I'm not talking convention size, just maybe those of the XO group who could get together in one country plus those who have donated. There could be a screening of the finished product(s) and DVDs available. Just an idea...

That'd be pretty cool. Better start saving those frequent flyer miles!

Would you by any chance need any more hard drives after Hand's? I'd be more than willing to go out and pick up one of any size you needed to send it to you to help out.

MeBeJedi, is this company of yours strictly going to be video to DVD transfers, or will you be able to offer custom menus and stuff?
