Info Wanted: 'Mad Max Fury Road' - no b&w or silent version?

According to Amazon.com, which is wrong more often than not, none of the releases of Mad Max 4 will feature the black & white or silent versions of the film that George Miller promised would be included.

Hopefully this is an oversight, otherwise it looks like there’ll be a project or two for a restless fan =| (not to imply that that restless fan is me, I’m just trying to start a discussion)

I think I may have seen somewhere that someone is already working on a silent version?

I'd be more interested in a version that doesn't look like stop-motion. Great movie almost ruined by the odd choice to mess with the framerate for artistic reasons.

 Honestly didn't notice.

I feel like I only visit this site to ruin movies for myself and see things that cannot be unseen.

I never even noticed. There's all kind of speedups in the first two (or three?) movies, though.

The only thing that really bugged me (aside from the super-saturated orange'n'teal) was that all of the CGI/green-screen in the opening sequence looked like it was done by the same team that did the Star Wars movies >_< The rest of the movie looked pretty good, although I've read that he actually did stick with mostly practical effects, so maybe that had something to do with it...

You probably can't just convert it to B&W and have that be the end since you can play around with contrast and brightness creating a wide range of different images. If anyone was going to try; here is the pic that the editor posted on his twitter account of what the B&W looks like:

Correct, which is why I'm not qualified for a project like this =)

I was wondering, though, if the pre-release media might be useful at all, since they all have a much more monochrome treatment.

But at any rate, hopefully Amazon is just misinformed, and it will be officially released...or maybe they're saving it for a double-dip later on =|

My bet is there'll be a double-dip announced within a year. Some sort of fancy, bloated box set, or a "Diamond Luxe" edition, perhaps.

It’s only music no dialogue and black and white you know that? It’s like watching a silent version of the film.

Fart house version

It’s also George Miller’s preferred version, which some people might consider giving its due.

It could be brilliant but it’s an alternative and it is not a good first exposure to the film as you would not understand what is going on without seeing the theatrical film first.

Would putting “Beyond Thunderdome” in Black & White and no dialogue with only music improve this film?

I am just saying that it is an alternative and I would not be surprised if there are mixed feelings on it after people see this version; and it also does not seem to differentiate itself in terms of different footage as in it is very much the same cut in Black and white with no dialogue.

Of course you would - it’s a primarily visual film by design. Miller famously edited the first two movies as if they were silent, believing that the visual rhythms would cue the audiences in to the (very simple) relationships and motives.

Would putting “Beyond Thunderdome” in Black & White and no dialogue with only music improve this film?

Thunderdome is the most dialogue-heavy of the four, and some decent material would certainly be lost if the speech were taken out, so perhaps not improved; comprehensible, though? Definitely.

And no-one ever suggested it would be anything else. Perhaps ‘people’ can judge when they’ve actually seen it and understood what Miller was getting at.

I see it as more a political statement by George Miller.

I think he perhaps wishes to convey how visually lazy a lot of modern movies are and perhaps, yes too many movies rely too heavily on dialogue. He can do this while holding an armful of awards. And rightly so.

A film that I am also very fond of is “All is Lost” with Robert Redford. There is very few moments of dialogue the story is told through events that happen and facial expressions and desperation. It conveys the sense of being all alone and in big trouble, trapped.

“Buried” is another good example of a film that uses Dialogue quite sparingly again alone and trapped.

Mad Max Fury Road - It does not fit in to the same mold of being alone and trapped, and personally I think he did an amazing job with the film he delivered theatrically and technically.

I am not trying to influence your opinion before you see it, but I am interested in it also. I just feel a bit skeptical about it, not saying I would not like to see it personally but I am not sure I will enjoy the film as much as with the dialogue. The Black and White does not bother me in the slightest. Without the Dialogue you miss a lot of the culture of “that world” and no Mad Max film has ever been silent before.

The bit about there being a music-only track hasn’t been confirmed.

A good portion of Mad Max 2 is silent.

I’m sure I’ll check out Fury Road in silent mode at some point (provided it’s a separate audio track as promised), but I’m indifferent towards the idea. Seeing it in Black & Chrome is what I’m really pumped about. I bet it’ll look awesome that way, and as good as the theatrical release was, I was already pretty tired of Orange & Teal at that point.

according to some FB postings in various Mad Max groups the B/w fury road is not the silent dialogue music version that Miller created, but rather a color toned black and white version of the film with full sound. It further went to mention that the actual silent dialogue/music version would be released at a later time
